Not a Chance, Dad!

"There is not a chance that I am chasing a Wiffle Ball all over a silly, little court," I answered my dad a few years ago when he invited me to play Pickleball.  Two things about that statement.  One, I know God has a real sense of humor because every time I make a emphatic statement like that, it turns out to be 100% wrong.  Two, I should have known, dad is always right.  I am grateful for the day he demanded, "get your stuff, we are playing!"  He could not get me off the court that day.  Why did I wait so long?

During the pandemic, I played quite often and now that I can travel again, my first two vacations have included Pickleball.  I played in a big Newport Beach tournament in May.  It did not go well!  My friends and I have vowed never to speak of that incident again!  Shhh!  Don't tell anyone I referenced it here.

Last weekend, we traveled to Meridian, Idaho for the Pacific Northwest Regional Pickleball Championship.  I did not have high expectations.  I played mixed doubles with my partner, Debi.  She played awesome and we gave our first opponents quite a challenge, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11.  They ended up wining gold and we ended up going 3 more rounds in the consolation division before we lost.  It was a big improvement over our Newport Beach results.

Debi also did well with our good friend, Tami, in their women's doubles division matches.

The next day, Randy Seevers and I played men's doubles.  We ended up winning first place in our 3.0 division.  Our third trip for the year is now set.  Our win gave us a golden ticket to Indian Wells Tennis Garden in December for the 2021 Margaritaville National Pickleball Championships (near Palm Springs).  Life sure has some strange twists and turns.

Dad is right! ! !  It is fun to chase that little ball all over the place.  Pickleball has been a real blessing through the pandemic and, it looks like, for years to come.

Debi and Randy are wonderful partners and I am lucky to be on their teams.  We were all lucky to have a contingent of  really good Runnin for Rhett friends join us to play and support one another.  The tournament was a success for that reason alone.  Runnin for Rhett is a wonderful organization that gets kids and adults (including me) moving into life.

The Players!

Two years ago, Pickleball was not part of our Runnin for Rhett  training,  but our friend Brian (front and center in the picture above with a sandwich) introduced us to the game.  He has spent many patient hours teaching us the game.  He is talented pickleball player and an even better person.  There are few that would do as he has done.  One person can make a real difference.

Brian!

Runnin for Rhett's fall training season starts Sat., July 24th.  We have those that train in many ways; walking, walk-running, running, trail running, hiking, cycling and PICKLEBALL!  Come join us!

Good morning, Ray... pickleball is something I'd heard of and somehow associated with "old" people (of course I'm an old people but don't quite admit to it). But I knew litttle to nothing about it till I read your post... learning something new here every day! (But still not taking up pickleball... just not old enough! 😉)

For some reason, I have heard pickleball mentioned a lot lately, and as of a few months ago I hadn't ever heard of it. It looks like a lot of fun!

Now, I know what pickeball is, and it does look like fun.  Congratulations on listening to your dad, and enjoying the sport as much as you do.  A

Kathy Streib, it truly is a fun game.  What Mary Margaret and I enjoy is that we can play together.  If I lived closer to my dad, I would play in a tournament with my day.  That would be really cool!

Thank you very much, Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can!  After reading your post, I want to buy a silo and add it to my backyard like you did.  Your bar turned out sooooo cool.  My problem, I don't have enough room.  Maybe at my next home!

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. My dad loves to tell everyone that he turned stupid when I became a teenager and turned smart again when I turned 30.  I do not recall the change.  Sometimes, my dad tells a story better than it really was.  I have been lucky to have a great dad.  I do not know how he did it, raised by a single mom and having me at 18.

Roy Kelley, thank you and I hope you are having a wonderful week.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker.  It was interesting at this tournament, there was a 19+ division with some excellent Pickleballers.  They were way better than me.  In the open division, their was a men's doubles father, son combination.  The kid was incredible.  Pickleball isn't your parents sport any more.  It is fun and that is from a former, big time skeptic!

The best part of the article, right Brian England.   I think fun is his middle name!

Kat Palmiotti.  Take it from the original skeptic, it is a blast.

Thank you, Ron and Alexandra Seigel.  I feel fortunate, for sure.

OMG loved your comment, when I was a teenager I had a slight or large disagreement with my dad... once I joined the military... and came back... life changed, he became my best friend, my mentor and my advisor.... yes I guess you and I went through those phases.... I miss my  dad even more no one to share my views about the current state of the world like I could with him...Endre

Thank you, Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400.  I have certainly been blessed with a great mom and dad.  I am also so fortunate to be healthy enough to play pickleball.  I learn to appreciate it all more every day.

That is great to hear, Roy Kelley.  I hope it is getting a lot of use.  I have found the pickleball community to be a fun group to be associated with.  Thank you for stopping by and joining in this post.
