Lessons on Professional Baseball & Real Estate

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is with a new game every day and that's the way baseball is -----Bob Feller (1918 - 2010)

Baseball is a lot like any professional career even Real Estate! Today, in history on Friday, June 30, 1950 (before I was even born) New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio and Boston Red Sox Dom DiMaggio hit home runs in the same game! It was the first time brothers had hit home runs in the same game in the Majors in 15 years! All my life, the name Joe DiMaggio sticks in my mind as one of the most famous baseball players of all time and that he was a very thoughtful and nice man. Even after his divorce to the iconic Marilyn Monroe, he always did the right thing. Perhaps I was too young to know he had a brother Dom DiMaggio which gives me reason to pause and wonder, why do some people go down as legends and other don't?

Did you know there were three DiMaggio brothers who made it into the big leagues? Here's how I know from reading about Joe DiMaggio and remembering lessons taught by my dad: If anyone wants to know why three kids in one family made it to the big leagues they just had to know how we helped each other and how much we practiced back then. We did it every moment we could ---Joe DiMaggio

During summer months my dad made sure to take us to the park every Sunday afternoon to practice baseball. My father's famous words raising my sisters and I were, if you want to be good at something, you have to practice! There will be times when you sweat more than other times, you may not catch the ball, you may strike out or fall down, but never take your eyes off the ball and you don't quit!

In my career in Real Estate, I'm proud to say I don't quit and thankfully, nobody ever quit on me. Real estate sales is a lot like baseball. You can really work up a sweat but you always stay cool, calm, and collective. It takes leadership, major role players, and a Team to succeed. During this crazy Seller's Market, buyers may not get the first offer or many offers presented when there are multiple offers dominating the purchase of one property. You simply continue to practice, learn from each experience, and you don't give up. Coaching and motivating buyers is a  very important skill. I may not have the most famous real estate name in the industry but having referrals is the biggest reward for me. My last three sales were based on good referrals and for me and my clients, we didn't strike out. In the end,  we won!!! We cheered! And we keep in touch! I'm ready for another inning, how about you? ---Patricia Feager

Nina Hollander, Broker - It was my immigrant grandparents that got my father interested in baseball. My immigrant mother's mother was more interested in boxing - go figure! I loved playing baseball with my dad. On the Sunday before I moved to TX I went to one last Chicago Cubs Baseball game and it was so memorable. But I loved the Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres too!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... my father had no interest whatsoever in any sport. And as my parents were divorced when I was barely 6 years old, his influence was not much of a presence in my daily life. My mother was training in track for the Olympics but then WWII happened. She did get to go the Berlin Olympics just before the war. So I kind of grew up watching track and field events with her... she tried to get me interested in track but my talents did not lie there!

Nina Hollander, Broker - Isn't it interesting how parents influence their children? My parents stayed married and never divorced and neither did I. That's something I can't relate to but you turned out just swell! Obviously, your mother had a very different positive influence on you because of her training for the Olympics. WWII changed lives! From my mother's perspective, I guess she believed in getting the household chores done because it was her version of the Olympics. A clean house meant my sisters and I got to go outside and play while she stayed indoors. That was very nice that your mom got to go to the Berlin Olympics and that you watched track & field with her. I think I would have done great at Track because I signed up for every single race at picnics and almost always took first place. It was fun, because I was the only girl in the family to take home a prize. We didn't have track and field at the High School where I went but I started running in my 40s and continued through most of my 50s. When I worked at Abbott Laboratories in IL I was in a Club called the Abbott Rabbits. One year, I took the award and received a plague for "Abbott Rabbit of the Year!" I was so proud of that. When I was relocated to TX, that Club did not exist (yet I continued on my own) and the weather was always hot! For health reasons, I had to stop but in my mind, I didn't quit believing how important running was and still is!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... I jogged until I was 40 and then my knees couldn't take it anymore... a good thing I quit as I have enough issues with them now as is and still recovering from two knee surgeries back in December and February.

faye schubert - I just loved what you had to say because it is absolutey true! When I first got started in the business, smug agents who were #1 in my office bothered me. I would be sure to congratulate their successes and never got it back from them. There came a day when I paid no attention to them and focused on my own business and that's when success took off. You are so right, real estate is not easy! Good agents, like yourself knows that.

I was a Yankee fan since I was very young Patricia. Yes, of course everyone knows who Joe was, but his brothers...not so much. Great analogy to compare baseball and Real Estate. Never give up and keep trying until you get to the "Home" Run!

Patricia,

I am not a baseball fan, nor is Ron, but we do watch the World Series.  I did not know there were three DiMaggios.  I liked your analogy of baseball and real estate.  And I think real estate by referral is the best and most satisfying  way to operate in the field.  A

Nina Hollander, Broker mentioned that her mother was training for the Berlin Olympics, and my father was chosen to represent Lebanon in boxing.  He opted out because the test for this Engineering School acceptance coincided with the same date as the Olympics...

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - Fond memories of baseball legend Joe - he really was a good old Joe! Thank you for the nice compliment about the analogy to our business. We roll up our sleeves and we're not afraid to do the hard work behind the scenes. Home runs matter and that's what drives success, especially when it comes to referrals! I think I will put on my bucket list, to go see a NY Yankee baseball game!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - My immigrant grandparents spoke broken English and what they couldn't say, they simply smiled a lot. But I do remember they knew the words to "Take Me Out To the Ball Game!" I've never been to a live World Series Game but would sure love to attend one someday! The excitement of the crowd would bring back the adrenaline and that's another thing about succeeding in the real estate business. The adrenaline rush is the best feeling of all! As far as referrals goes, for me it was a right of passage when I got to a point when I got consistent referrals. I love referrals! It's the best way to know you're on the right track.

Hello Patricia - sports analogies and comparisons to the world of real estate and beyond continue to show us how things can be aligned in all sorts of ways.

As for Dom DeMaggio or his other brother, I wasn't aware(or don't recall knowing) but I am sure our Boston Baseball Buddy Endre Barath, Jr. is well-acquainted.  And like baseball, AR is a team sport where expertise can sometimes come out of left field.  Batter-Up(which in addition to a baseball reference can also apply to the kitchen where Endre also "rounds" the plate).  🙃

Michael Jacobs - I really enjoyed your comment, especially in regards to Endre Barath, Jr. "Batter-Up!" Ha-Ha! I'm sure Endre will get a kick out of that one too!

Baseball is as American as Apple Pie! Home ownership is too! "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," is a song I will never forget! And I would add, Apple Pie is as American as the song "Home on the Range!"

Patricia another interesting thing about Joe and Dom DiMaggio, is that they played for the two baseball teams that have the best known rivalry in baseball.  I wonder what it was like when the family got together ..... LOL

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - Trust & Sincerity goes together like a Lock & Key. It builds relationships that last.

George Souto - I'm glad to know that about "the best known rivalry in baseball," too! I can only imagine what it was like when 'family got together!' It would have been fun to be a fly on those walls!

Patricia, loved, loved this post WHERE is the Gold Start to it??

On a side note I did enjoy your comments back and fort with Nina Hollander, Broker .When we moved to the US my father never could get into baseball, he did not understand the rules of the game and the strategy similar to chess.... so he had a hard time accepting that I became a Baseball Fan:))).  Now as to Michael Jacobs  comment loved it as well. Now to everyone's question yes I knew of Joe, Dom and Vince. They were amazing Joe 9 all star appearances, Dom 7  all star appearances and little known Vince with two all star appearances.... not many families can have bragging rights like that. To boot Vince played for a handful of teams.

As to your analogy about baseball and Real Estate is so spot on. loved your closing paragraph. Again where is the Gold Star??? Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. - I guess there's no Gold Star because I'm no star! LOL! I loved your response and Michael Jacobs was right! You would know a thing or two about Joe and the DiMaggio family and you did!!! I was immersed in baseball, thanks to my dad! The kids in my neighborhood also collected baseball cards and quizzed each other and traded baseball cards. For me, learning the rules of baseball was easy. As for Football, I still don't have a clue!

Thanks for sharing info on Vince, the mystery boy. I wonder if it was difficult for him to measure up to his brothers? I didn't even think of family bragging rights but boy they were worthy! Can you imagine being a kid around their age and hanging out with them on a Saturday afternoon playing ball?

Well, today is the anniversary of that historic event for Joe & Dom and I enjoyed writing this post as much as all the wonderful feedback too! No star :( but you sure made me one happy gal. Thank you!!!!!!!!

Brian England - Perhaps it's the sport, my upbringing, my dad, or maybe it was just a Chicago thing? When I worked at Abbott Laboratories in IL the Pharmaceutical Marketing & Sales Department where I worked took a day off and we went on a picnic. All of us played baseball and I still remember sliding into home plate when we played ball! Baseball always and and always will bring back great memories for me.
