With many post-plague year travel restrictions easing in 2021, people are finally planning summer vacations. It makes sense to use the United States Postal Service’s free mail stop-start service. Once can stop or start mail delivery service over the phone at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777 or online at http://www.usps.gov/.
First, know the exact date to stop receiving mail in Santa Clara County, and the date to resume mail delivery. Patrons can choose to have the held mail delivered to one's mailbox on the day one returns, or arrange to pick it up at the designated local neighborhood post office.
When you’re planning a vacation, it gives a person peace of mind to know that no sensitive financial documents such as checks or banking information are piling up in the mailbox. Here is a quick tutorial on how to stop and start U.S. Postal Service here in Silicon Valley-whether one lives in San Jose, Cupertino, Saratoga or anywhere in Santa Clara County.
First, go to http://www.usps.gov/. On the top right, under Products and Services, roll the mouse over Receiving Mail, then scroll down to Put mail on hold. A new screen will appear.
On the top right under Create a Request, enter one's 5-digit Zip Code, then click GO.
When entering the information, BE SURE TO ENTER THE PHONE NUMBER WITHOUT ANY DASHES OR MARKS BETWEEN THE NUMBERS. For example, you enter the phone number altogether as 4082528900, instead of 408.252.8900 or (408) 252-8900. Click submit and a screen will appear comparing the name and address entered to what the U.S. Postal Service considers the official address (which may include that +Four code after the 5-digit zip code). If it is okay and needs no editing, click Submit. A confirmation email with the information and the dates should be received. If OK, click submit and a confirmation similar to this should appear:
