Today Chrysler announced that next year their vehicles will come with the option of becoming a mini wireless Internet hotspot

So now you can get Internet in your car, Virgin has Ethernet ports on their planes, and I still can't pick up a cell signal in my basement.....but I digress.

The Internet will be a dealer installed option that will work over cellular telephone links. Chrylser's uconnect system can link telephones and personal music players to the car's onboard electronics, so imagine controlling your Apple iPod with radio and steering wheel controls.  It will also includes the company's in-car 30-gigabyte hard drive, with options for three-channel satellite television service and satellite radio.  The system will work while the car is in motion and can be utilized by passengers.

Cost is expected to be about $449 for the wireless router, $35-$50 for dealer installation, with service fees at about $29/month with a onetime activation fee of $35.

My mind is spinning with the implications this can have on real estate as this type of technology becomes more commonplace, as I am sure it will- and fast.

Can you imagine the turning the computer screen in your car to "real estate" mode.  As you drive around a neighborhood, listings are being feed to your car.  Maybe you told your car your search criteria and it is mashing listing data with maps to spit out GPS directions to see your home matches in the most efficient route.

When you drive by a home that is actually for sale, the home and car could basically "talk" feeding multiple photos, podcasts, video, descriptions, and vital data about the home to your dashboard.  Because the information is coming through the phone lines, there could be a push to talk to the Realtor on the same device.  And all this could then be downlaoded to your iPod for future review with the push of a button.

I think the value of the website in a marketing strategy is already diminishing with the advent of Web 2.0 media.  People can get tons of information from so many sources today, however, they need help deciphering it.  This is why sites that allow dialogue in the form of question and answers and blogging are so valuable.

I believe this type of mobile technology is going to make the website even less important, and the need for a mobile marketing strategy CRITICAL.  People aren't going to be sitting in their cars surfing websites.  They are going to want customized information feed directly to them.

It won't happen today or tomorrow, but it is coming.  Each purchase of another iPhone and now cars with mobile technology, puts us that much closer to what I imagine Web 3.0 to be- when computers become antiquated technology replaced by personal, handheld technology that is always accessible and customized to feed directly to the end user, verses the end user going out and searching for it.

And we thought talking on the phone while driving was dangerous...  I can only imagine my husband driving down the road talking on his phone, listening to his mp3 player while trying to pull up the latest Cubs score and having a conversation on IM.  The next step is going to have to be cars that will drive for us, to free us up for other activities that are now becoming more important than steering while driving!

Now, if we don't all burn out!  There has to be a way for some time out!  I simply refuse to take my cell phone into the bathroom !

Sara - I've heard of this on several diffent letters.  With some of those crazy drivers, I might have to start rating my blog R if I'm going to do so driving:-)

06/26/2008 02:24 PM by Jason Sardi, Pennsylvania Mortgage Broker (First Choice Equity Group Inc.)

Will this mean our clients can surf the internet for more houses while we are driving around?  Wouldn't it be cool if every listing was a hot spot and as soon as you pulled up in front of it the information about the home would automatically download to the screen in front of you?  I know there are tools know that you can download to but I want "automagic" as my kids you to say.

06/26/2008 02:24 PM by Cindy Jones-Northern Virginia Real Estate & Military Relocation Services (RE/MAX Allegiance #1 RE/MAX Company in the World)

Wow that is really neat!  A little scarey too!  I agree with Cindy above it would be neat if you could pull up in front of the house and the info just populate on the screen!

06/26/2008 02:27 PM by ginger walker (Keller Williams Realty)

Joan- There are probably some clients that thank you for this courtesy.  I have to admit, I have sent many an email from various stalls around the country... TMI...

Cindy and Ginger- Exactly!!  I know this type of technology exists today, it is just a little rough.  Plus not enough people have a device to support it to be very widespread.  But it is coming.

Jason - Haha.  I can only imagine......

If you have a tablet PC you can get the documents you need signed and send them from your car on the spot.  Should be interesting.

06/26/2008 02:35 PM by Robert Dawson (C21 Colonial Realty)

Robert- Yes, truly a "mobile office'.

06/26/2008 02:37 PM by Sara Bonert (Zillow)

I am not interested in that at all. I value my drive time. Besides. on my island I can't get sgnal while driving in more than half the places ... I enjoy the drive. I put in enough time without having to encrouch upon my lovely drive.

I guess I am a little old fashioned...just got my blackberry last month. It will be a long time before I reach this stage!

sara, It is incredible how fast technololgy is moving forward. 10 years from now we will be able to have chips imbedded in our heads where all we have to do is think something and an a meaasge will be delivered whSre we want it to go. REALTORS(R) will have to be cyborgs!!!!

06/26/2008 03:24 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

I have read articles where they predict the need for typing will not be a necessary skill in the future.  First they will have to improve on voice recognition capabilities, then they will get into mind reading!  Technology is advancing so quickly, you might not be that far off.  To put it in perspective, could you imagine the technology we were dreaming of 10 years ago?  Today much of that is a reality.

06/26/2008 03:32 PM by Sara Bonert (Zillow)

I've been trying to promote my mobile website for this very reason.  I see so many people w/ blackberries and smart phones that have internet so it makes sense that the tech saavy buyers will use their knowledge to help them find information as quickly as possible.  Hopefully this will eventually pay off but I certainly hope buyers will park before looking stuff up.  The number of people I see driving and texting is getting a little scary.

You can always micro blog on Twitter via your car now as you can use your mobile to Twit. But alas at the 140 character limit, no profound entries will be allowed.

It is interesting and abit wacky to have too many options for connecting. At some point we need to unplug.

06/26/2008 07:23 PM by Nosy Busy Bee!

So when do the hovercrafts come out? :)

I knew the Jetson's were real!!!

Nice blog, it's always exciting when the latest and greatest technology starts to surface.

06/27/2008 06:53 AM by Dacia Turner (The Edge Realty Group)

I can't wait!  The naysayers will soon convert. I know the technology is there.. the cops here have similar systems already,.. it is a matter of time before all cars are equipped,.. and I will be right there!  For those who desire down time.. there is always the "off" button. Great blog!

Umm.. I've been in the car with my father in law driving, trying to talk on the phone and trying to get the Cubs (or Bulls) scores.. Pretty scary stuff.

Sara,

We just leased a new Chrysler Town and Country for my wife and we discussed the Uconnect option for the future. But my gosh that car already has a 30Gig hard drive, two DVD screens for the back seats, and a closed circuit TV for backing up!

This technology is amazing!

06/27/2008 09:35 AM by Jon Boyd Ann Arbor Real Estate Buyer's Agent (Home Buyer's Agent of Ann Arbor)

OOoOOooo How exciting! Where can I sign up to test the beta product??

06/27/2008 09:35 AM by Jane Doe (ABC Realty)

Wow!  And they expect us not to use our sell phones while driving!!...NJ law prohibits cell phone use while driving except for hands-free use.

06/27/2008 09:38 AM by Antoinette Murphy, GRI (RE/MAX Atlantic)

It will be good for passengers but I'm afraid too many Drivers will try to do this while driving. I've been rear-ended 3 times since cell phones have come out. Twice it was by drivers using "hands-free" devices. The last lady to rear end me stood there and told me that she was looking at me the whole time, saw the light turn red, saw everyone else come to a stop, but for some reason, she just never applied the brakes and ran right into my trunk...hmmm.

My sister's car was totalled last month (with her 2 young children in the back) by someone talking on a blue tooth....do you really think we need internet capabilities in our cars? Driving is not the time to multi-task!

06/27/2008 09:46 AM by Escrow Officer in Dallas

Hmmmm.  Interesting stuff.  But don't we already have this technogy with the Connect Anywhere devices for laptops?  That would seem to be a better investment, especially as we all try to do less driving...

My husband has a "hands free' phone built into his truck.  But of course, it is useless if he isn't driving.  We are thinking of disconnecting it and getting a regular cell phone.  In order for the hands free phone to work, you have to keep an active On Star subscription for a couple hundred dollars a year, over and above the phone cost.  So I am wondering if the Chrysler technology will have additional hidden fees.

Still fascinating stuff.  Thank you for the heads up!

06/27/2008 10:20 AM by Margaret Mitchell (Coldwell Banker Yorke Realty)

Sounds scary. You can almost guaranty accidents will increase. The insurance on those cars should be way more than ones without wi-fi.

06/27/2008 10:52 AM by Jami Van Den Bogaert (Keller Williams Realty)

I just heard about this and am so excited!  As a working mom, what would be better than having the ability to work from my car as my kids are at practice, etc?  Love it!  Now all I need is a chauffer!

06/27/2008 11:59 AM by Lesley Lambert Real Estate, Realtor, Westfield, MA (Park Square Realty)

I have a hard enough time returning Emails and texting when driving!

06/27/2008 01:40 PM by Robert Rauf (REMN The Real Estate Mortgage Network)

Sara, I have to say that is way too "Jetson" like ... Even though it's pretty scary stuffin the wrong hands - I will likely try it out.. God bless,

06/27/2008 04:51 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Pretty soon, it (RE) will all be done by osmosis, with microchips in our eyes, and finger print credit cards that have the loan docs preloaded (I would like that better than a barcode across my forehead). And one microchip that forces a buyer to say yes when they know they found the perfect home, but are afraid to say so. Ahhh...   such a lovely future!

Seriously...  great post! :-)

06/28/2008 02:41 PM by Kathleen Rollins - AZ Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage)

All I can say is that it seems very exciting but very dangerous!!!  How many things can you do when you drive.  Read emails, eat, put on lipstick etc.  I fear my new 16 year old driver on the road because of other drivers, not him.

07/05/2008 02:40 PM by Judy Greenberg- (847)602-5435 Buffalo Grove/ Long Grove (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage)

Very interesting.  Great idea and I'm sure it will take off.  There are plenty of people who always have to have the latest and greatest in technology and toys.  However, most buyers will not ionvest in this unless they are using this technology for something else.
