This Week...An Olympic Week

The 2020 Olympics opened last night and some of the games (softball, soccer, and skulling for example) have already taken place.

Without passion, you won't do something 100 percent. That's the bottom line.  Apolo Ohno, American speed skater, and an eight-time medalist

Yes, I know that it’s 2021 but in case you were MIA in 2020, the Olympics were not held.

Winning doesn't always mean being first. Winning means you're doing better than you've ever done before.  Bonnie Blair, American speed skater, and five-time gold medalist

We watched some of the sculling/rowing and the women’s softball games. I love the backstories...probably more than the games.

To win, you have to risk loss.  Jean-Claude Killy, French ski racer and three-time gold medalist

One of the rowers spent 2020 practicing in his garage and working at the hospital during the pandemic. Read more about Philip Doyle here. Here is an Olympic spirit!!!

Never put an age limit on your dreams.  Dara Torres, American swimmer, and 12-time Olympic medalist

I have always admired the dedication, sacrifice, and focus it takes to be an Olympian. Each of us has within us that same spirit. What does your Olympic spirit want?

Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.  Wilma Rudolph, American sprinter and three-time gold medalist

Have an Olympic-sized weekend!

A very good message to share:

HI Wayne Martin I found the Opening Ceremonies to be underwhelming but I enjoyed seeing the athletes from the other countries.

Kathy it is to bad these Olympians are not able to have the full Olympic experience, since no one is allowed to attend this year because of COVID-19

It seems strange to watch the 2020 Olympics in 2021 and to watch the opening ceremonies in an empty stadium

Grant Schneider we had the Opening Ceremonies on but didn't really watch. For those who have trained so hard, I really do with them well.

Rocky Dickerson same here. We started watching the women's softball which has been fun. I hope that they show all of the different sports and not just swimming and gymnastics.

Bill Salvatore - YVP Blog I'll bet he does!!!  It takes so much dedication.

Nina Hollander, Broker I'm with you!  We've been watching out of interest in some of the sports but nothing like we used to.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I had a hard time with the 2020 Olympic title as well. When I first turned it on, I thought it might have been a repeat of something. I hope your mom will enjoy some of the games.

Kat Palmiotti think about how hard you work and you have your chance and it only comes every 4 years.

Brian England it was confusing for me too. I saw some of the cycling and many of the athletes had just returned from the Tour de France.

Joan Cox I think I enjoy the backstories more than anything.

I haven't watched anything yet, Kathy, but hope to.

It must be tough to be competing this year since the overall experience has to be so different given the practically empty stadium, along with everything else. And while there always seems to be some controversy there seems to be more in 2021!

faye schubert I can't tolerate it either and what irritates me more than anything is that they are taking the spotlight away from the other athletes.

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty I think that because athletes or good ones know what it's like to focus and give more than 100% and to keep trying, they can do well in whatever other things they try.

Will Hamm let's hope they all have the opportunity to participate!  They are winners by virtue of being there.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint I enjoy sports and welcome being able to watch these since I no longer want to watch the NBA or MLB.

Michael Jacobs we see them as athletes at the games but I love learning about the other side of them, like the doctor I mentioned who worked in his hospital during the pandemic.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I have to say that I was totally bored during the Opening Ceremonies.

George Souto it's hard for the families, I know.

Ed Silva I agree. Think of the parents who have been with their children through it all. They drove them to practice and made many sacrifices.

Jeff Dowler, CRS this has been hard and I feel for so many of the athletes who have worked so hard to get to the Olympics.

Morning Kathy.

While we were eating pizza last night I did see two boxing matches.  Otherwise, haven't watched any of the games.

In 1984 I was fortunate enough to travel to the Olympics in Los Angeles.  For several years I was close to Olympic swim coach Sherm Chavoor.  Sherm coached Olympic swimmers Mark Spitz, Debbie Meyers and Mike Burton, among others, here in the Greater Sacramento area. Sherm always promoted doing your personal best when competing.  It was as much about that, as it was about who you were competing against in the pool. If you focus on doing your personal best each race, the improvement over time will take care of any competitors.

Hi Kathy,
I also love the back stories! That is the best part of the Olympics for me.  I'm not one to just sit and watch the events but I've had some of the lesser-known sports like fencing, water polo, and women's handball on while doing other things.  That's been fun.

I'm sorry the athletes don't get the whole experience due to no spectators at the games.

I don't think I've ever watched summer olympics. I've watched the winter, but the summer event just doesn't interest me.
