Saturday Smiles: Revisiting the July Farmers Market!

Santa Barbara County and neighboring Ventura County grow strawberries year round.  The varieties change with the seasons, and some of the plants do better in the colder months.

We love those torpedo shaped tomatoes. We love all the colors they come in. They are perfect  when you want to make a quick fresh sauce for dish. Just cut them up and add a little butter and a little wine, and top with fresh basil, they make a sauce with all the taste of summer in every bite.  It is good as a fish topping, meat, chicken or pasta with a touch of Parmesan...

Sweet red onions are in season also.  They are a favorite of ours.  It takes us a week or two to go through just one.  I used them in salads.

And summer is synonymous with fresh corn.  While in high school, I worked in the neighboring town at Green Giant in 12 hour shifts detasseling corn in the fields in the summer.  When the corn harvest came, I worked at the shucking machines.

Summer flowers abound like these lisanthus that come in a variety of colors.  They grow in grassy prairies!

Wishing everyone an abundance of Saturday Smiles!

July is a good month to enjoy the bounty of both vegetable and flower gardens. Our tomatoes are finally starting to get color. We've had a few of the little ones, but still waiting to enjoy the big heirlooms. Thanks for sharing these gorgeous photos.

Hello Alexandra and Ron - I don't know what it is or why but I have never been a big fan of corn but I can appreciate seeing it growing in fields.  One of life's many mysteries.  Yet again.  Have a nice weekend.

Myrl Jeffcoat I prefer white corn, go figure.  There is a varitey that GreenGiant came up with and that was called shoe peg corn.  It used to be canned only, and since I don't ever buy cans (except tomatoes San Marzano from Italy), I have no idea if they make it.  I had it fresh.  A

Grant Schneider when I was in high school, I read that the Japanese don't eat anything that is out of season, only seasonal fruit,, vegetables, etc.  And we pretty much follow that. A

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD our yellow cherry is producing like crazy, the red has a lot of flowers and I spotted on little green potential.  The Cherokee had one that we just had that was amazing,,,and there are two more growing.  Our summer thus far has been cool, not warm enough for tomatoes...A

Michael Jacobs the Europeans always thought of corn as pig food, and it would never grace their lips....Until Green Giant invited the French to Minnesota, and they introduced to my parents who helped with the nogtiations, and the GG got their corn into Bordeaux.  Subsequently my parents went to Bordeaux and enjoyed the warm hospitality wine and all kinds of Bordeaux foods... All this to say, perhaps there is something about your genes (not jeans) that may remember corn as a sty staple. LOL A
