Sherm Chavoor

While the Tokyo Olympic Games are currently going on,
I'd like to take this opportunity to honor a historic Sacramento person, who helped catapult our area into the limelight of Olympic Swimming for three decades.

Sherm Chavoor, founder of the Arden Hills Swim and Tennis Club, developed and opened the hallowed ground (and waters) under his single proprietorship in 1954.

This private club, in Carmichael, offered swim and tennis facilities for members; and the waters of the pools became magical to many competitive swimmers, who were trained under the watchful eyes and wizzardry of the Merlinesc Chavoor.

Chavoor's training consisted of barking incantations of swimming farther and faster than anyone else (revolutionary over-distance training), his aqua alchemy produced swimmers who were awarded a total of 31 Olympic medals - 21 of them Gold medals.  His champions set more than 200 world and American records.

One of the swimmers became Chavoor's Lancelot in the pool.  Mark Spitz, became the ultimate victor of nine Olympic Gold medals - two in the 1968 Mexican Olympics and seven in the Munich Olympics of 1972. In addition to accumulation of Gold medals, Spitz also obtained a Silver medal, and a Bronze in the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Triple Gold medallists, include Debbie Meyer (1968 Mexico Olympics) and Mike Burton (1968 Mexico & 1972 Munich Olympics).

Also included in the Arden Hills Swimming Dynasty, were Sue Pederson with two Gold medals and two Silver medals (1968 Mexico Olympics); John Nelson - one Gold medal, and one Bronze medal; Mike Burton - Three Gold medals total (2 Golds in 1968 Mexico Olympics & 1 Gold in 1972 Munich Olympics); Ellie Daniel - One gold medal, one Silver medal, and one Bronze medal in 1968 Mexico Olympics; Jeff Float - One Gold medal in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

In 1985 Coach Chavoor retired from his illustrious career.  And in 1992 Sacramento lost this special legendary giant, who succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer!

What an interesting history story Myrl!  I never knew about Sherm Chavoor or what he created and how many people he mentored and trained.  What an amazing man he was. Thank you for sharing his story!

That is quite a legacy of winners that Mr. Chavoor left behind and it may well spawn future stars if his students pick up the mantra.

Wayne Martin - I sometimes listened in awe when Sherm would tell me about his experience at the Munich Olympics in 1972.  He was housed with Mark Spitz in Olympic Village.  For those who don't know or remember, a group of Palestinian terrorists took 8 Israeli athletes hostage and murdered two of them.  At one point 2 olive skinned men knocked on their door.  Sherm looked through the peephole and suspected initially they were terrorists.  They hit the floor, but it turned out they were Italian journalists.  Sherm went on to tell how he and Spitz were secreted out of the Village, with Spitz on the floor of the car because Spitz was Jewish.  Sadly, the two of them missed the closing ceremonies.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Brian England - Actually, Sherm Chavoor wasn't a swimmer.  It was even rumored that he didn't know how to swim and nearly drowned when his team threw him into the pool after a win at Nationals.  However, I do know he could stroke enough to have saved himself!  I always marveled that he was a great swimming coach, while not being much of a swimmer.

Michael Jacobs - Sherm Chavoor's existence in the swimming realm here in Sacramento, put us on the map with that sport for a number of years.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I can tell you that my beginnings into the real estate world, came because he helped me believe I could.

Bill Salvatore - YVP Blog - Yes, it is!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I have never swam competitively.  However, my 3 children were all competitive swimmers who swam at Arden Hills, where Sherm coached.  My youngest daughter was quite an accomplished swimmer in all strokes as an 8 year old.

Carol Williams - I think that is true of many who coach.  We know the players, but don't always focus as much on the wizard behind the scenes.  Thank you for the feature in the Bananatude Group.

Will Hamm - I just watched the baskeball game between the U.S. and France.  At one point the U.S. was ahead by 7 points, but gave it all away, and ultimately lost.  There have been some disappointments in other sports as well.  The U.S. team needs to grab their mojo back!

Roy Kelley - I hope you have an outstanding week as well.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I agree with you about the emergence of visionaries.  And, what came in the 1960s and beyond was the fruits from those visions.  Sherm was active in swim coaching and had swimmers competing in the Olympics from 1968 - 1984.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I'm putting out good thoughts for the U.S. Team during these Olympics as well.  I don't know if it is the pandemic protocols during these games that is throwing our team off a bit, but hope they can get their mojo going.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, CRB, Phoenix Broker - Without a doubt, he was an exceptional man!

Ed Silva - Swimming in Sacramento hasn't been the same since he left us.  I wish someone would pick up the mantle and create some future stars.

George Souto - There is no question about the number of lives he inspired and touched.

Hi Myrl- Thank you for the story of Sherm Chavoor. I did not know of him but I certainly have heard of those who have benefited from his coaching. I know how much you love swimming so I hope that you're enjoying the Olympics.

Kathy Streib - I just finished watching the basketball game between the U.S. and France.  At one point we were 7 points ahead. Then it started to unravel, and we ultimately lost.  I almost think they should have postponed the Olympics an additional year, in hopes everyone could get into the groove.  It seems like everything is mostly out of sync.

What an interesting story about someone I wasn't familiar with. Although I definitely remember Mark Spitz' Olympic performance in 1972. Impressive that Chavoor's students won 31 medals and set more than 200 records. He knew what he was doing!
