Complicated Grief

I learned the term "Complicated Grief" in listening to Brene Brown's Rising Strong. And she mentioned the Columbia University School of Social Work Center for Complicated Grief. I'm quoting from its home page for the public:

"CG is a form of grief that takes hold of a person’s mind and won’t let go

It is natural to experience intense grief after someone close dies, but complicated grief is different. Troubling thoughts, dysfunctional behaviors or problems regulating emotions get a foothold and stall adaptation. Complicated grief is the condition that occurs when this happens. People with complicated grief don't know what’s wrong. They assume that their lives have been irreparably damaged by their loss and cannot imagine how they can ever feel better. Grief dominates their thoughts and feelings with no respite in sight. Relationships with family and friends flounder. Life can seem purposeless, like nothing seems to matter without their loved one. Others begin to feel frustrated, helpless and discouraged. Even professionals may be uncertain about how to help.  People often think this is depression but complicated grief and depression are not the same thing."

I am NOT a clinician, not a therapist, not a diagnostician. But in every fiber of my body, with every beat of my heart, every thought of my soul and every wrench of my emotions, I know some of my clients, colleagues, friends, family may suffer from this.

I hope I've just pointed them to some resources for relief.

We are in a service industry - and often our clients are dealing with many issues in their lives.  We do the best we can in our real estate representation as the clients work through their grief and troubles. I can recall when the housing crisis first hit and I had agents returning from listing presentations hearbroken due to the financial issues their clients had shared with them. We are humans as well.

Lynnea Miller It is very very hard to be in the helping professions - my colleagues and I are often worried we'll burn out, just as much as we worry about our clients' challenges.

Kat Palmiotti Same here, hadn't ever seen references to it, despite attending a recent lecture by a death doula and hosting a blog post by a grief counselor. If it hadn't been for the mention in Brown's book, I don't know I would have ever stumbled onto it. Lauren

Good morning Lauren. In this business we are exposed to both those who are depressed as well as those who suffer from complicated grief. Great post! Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I think it may be true that people in certain professions, the helping professions, have a higher likelihood of interacting with depressed or grieving clients because we are involved with people in transition so often. Lauren

Hi Lauren I never heard of grief called complicated grief but I do know a few folks that over the years just couldn't pull themselves out of the intense grief and their lives kind of went to hell in a hand basket.  Sad ,very sad indeed.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, CRB, Phoenix Broker I'm very sorry to hear about the people you've seen in intense grief. It's so disheartening that Americans aren't necessarily allowed healthy emotional expression. Lauren

Thank you for sharing this information, Lauren - I had NO idea what this was called. I can tell you that my grandmother suffered this so extensively that she wound up dying before her time. She simply could not fathom life without my grandfather.

I can now spot this grief from a mile away and have bookmarked this post to share this resource with anyone I see headed down the CG path. THANK YOU for this!
