The US Supreme Court ruled today that the District of Columbia cannot ban a citizen from keeping a handgun at home. DC had one of the nation's strictest gun control laws.

The court found that the ban on handguns in DC; violated the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.  Handguns have been banned in DC since 1976.

The DC Mayor, Adrian Fenty was quoted as saying; "Whatever right the Second Amendment guarantees, it does not require the district to stand by while its citizens die".  Well opponents of the ban say "The criminals already have the guns...why can't a law abiding citizen have a gun in their home for protection?

While I personally won't comment whether I am for or against.  I can see both sides of the argument.

I do think it's a bit silly to not allow handguns in DC.  It's not like DC is an island - Virginia is across a river from DC; Maryland - on the other side of the street on some blocks.  Silly to think a guy on one side of a street could not own a handgun; while his neighbor could.

James,  Good blog!  The handgun issue will always be an issue.  It does escape logic that citizens in Maryland and Virginia can have guns, but D.C. enforces different laws.

I'll bet most of the country is like me and didn't even know about the gun restrictions in D. C.  I'm learning from these blogs.

Barbara has a point.  Most of the country doesn't eeven realize that DC is not a State and has zero representation in Congress (unless you count the quasi representation of a "Delegate" in the House of Representatives).

Hey, guns for everybody.  Argument in a bar?  Blam! (already happened in Prince George's County). Pissed off because someone cut you off on 16th Street? Blow out thier tires! Forget to put your gun out of reach of your 5 year old? Blam! Call the funeral home. A little depressed because the settlement didn't happen and you were counting on the money to pay your mortgage? Blam! End all your problems...fast.

You may not want to state a position, James, and I can understand.  I, though, am not in favor or the widespread proliferation of handguns.  The only huntin' in DC is for other humans.

Let me clarify my "non-position" on this.... I guess I am taking a position.....

I would rather there be no handguns anywhere.  You want to hunt; cool - have a hunting rifle or a few of them....

But I think its silly to tell people on 1 side of the street they can't do what the folks on the other side of the street can do.

Allowing guns in DC is not the answer; not allowing them EVERYwhere may be.

DC is not an Island...

A gun is the last thing I would want in my home - I would probably shoot myself in an emergency!!!! Pepper spray and a cell phone! My kind of protection!
