Check out the volcano in CarlsbadMt Calavera

A volcano in San Diego? You bet ‘cha!! Mount Calavera is located in Carlsbad, less than 5 miles from the beach. Many of us drive by Mount Calavera every day on our busy state route 78 and never even notice it. It's located in Preserve Calavera just south of the highway between the College Blvd and Emerald Ave exits. When molten volcanic rock emerges from underground, it cools, and then becomes a solid. When the volcano becomes inactive, and over time, the surrounding the earth erodes, as rain and sun have their effect on the soil and rock. What remains is the solid volcanic rock which is visible. There are only three volcano plugs in Southern California. I highly recommend an outing to the Preserve Calavera -there are many trails to hike, jog and/or ride your bike while visiting the volcano.

Take a botany hike and learn about native plants

Let's stick with Preserve Calavera for a second time, there is an amazing display of native plants and flowers to be admired there (and lots of critters, too). I recently went on a botany hike led by a member of the California Native Plant Society, James Dillane, and I was surprised to see how many colorful flowers were in bloom this year at the preserve. As our group walked more than 4 miles to admire the display of many different plants and flowers, James graciously answered our questions as we oohed and aahed over the splash of color on every slope and in every meadow. The native plants in California are quite spectacular and unique, but are often overlooked, because our climate allows almost anything to grow here. Non-natives sometimes get all the attention; but in addition to being beautiful, native plants promote healthy gardens and require a lot less water than non-natives. With our current water shortage in Southern California, planting natives is a great alternative to planting other types of gardens that require a lot of water. (Keep in mind the best time to see wildflowers is in spring.)

See a live performance at the Moonlight Amphitheatre

Right here in North County we have a lovely outdoor amphitheatre in Vista's Brengle Terrace Park. It is a relaxing venue where there are many live plays and other events. Moonlight is a place where you can bring your lawn chairs, a picnic lunch/dinner, and some fine wine; and then kick-back as the sun is setting and enjoy the outdoor experience. One of my favorite shows to see at the amphitheatre is the annual free concert that precedes the Scottish Highland Games. In past years, we've seen great Celtic performers like the Wicked Tinkers and Alasdair Frasier, as well as traditional Celtic dance performances. It's a great show, and did I mention it's free?  In July, the performances will be Guys and Dolls, as well as, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Enjoy a delicious meal at a great restaurant and brewery

The top five would not be complete without mentioning a good food hang-out in the area--this place has much more than a fabulous menu! The Stone Brewery Co. located in Escondido, is quite impressive in many ways. Some of the features at the restaurant and brewery are the unique architecture, and exquisite grounds that include a Koi pond. This beautiful outdoor area is perfect for a before or after meal stroll. There is so much to share about this remarkable establishment. The ingredients used in their meals are primarily locally grown and mainly organic products. Their meats are 100% naturally raised. Almost everything on the menu is organic. They pride themselves on providing quality, and an atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy your meal. Enjoy a P, B & J sandwich-peanut butter & jelly? No, it's pistachio butter and apricot jam with Delice De Bourgone cheese. How does a grilled Buffulo burger sound? The menu is truly unique and it changes regularly. In addition to the great food, they have a store where you can pick up novelty items, t-shirts, beer mug, hats and more. Oh, did I mention the beer (and wine)? They make beer there... yummy beer...world famous beer! You can drink it there, and you can buy it from their store to take home. I asked my son, Jonathan, who is a server there, what his favorite thing is about Stone--He said, hands-down "it's the beer!" If you stop in, please say hi to him! Great atmosphere, food, beer, wine, shopping and movie nights, too. You gotta check them out!

Listen to jazz in the park

The City of Carlsbad presents a free concert series in the park each year-June through August. The free concerts have been very popular for the last 23 years-in fact, it was reported that 3000 people attended each of the concerts last year. This year, every Friday evening, from 6-8pm, at the Stagecoach, Pointsettia or Calavera Hills Park, folks can bring their chairs and picnic dinners, and enjoy the live music. The music is diverse and is reportedly going to be great to dance to (as in years past). On the 4th of July, Ruby & the Red Hots will be performing at the Stagecoach Park venue. It's a fabulous way to end the work week (well, for those who work M-F). Even if your work week doesn't end on Friday, it's a wonderful way to break up the monotony of the week.

There's so much more "going on" in the North County... but this is a good start!! Enjoy the summer....

Hi Deborah!

Beautiful post! I don't understand why you have the yellow circle with the cross through it....this is only used if the post is not your own or if you have not written it. I'm assuming you did write it since you're entering it in the contest?

Also, please add it to Localism in your area in order to be eligible for the contest. If you're unclear how to do this please ask me and I'll guide you through it.

I hope you enjoy the concert tonight!

Thank you Jo-Anne for your comments. I don't know why I'm getting that symbol either. I'm not real savvy when it comes to this website, so I could be doing something wrong...

I would appreciate your help in posting it to Localism in my area, not really sure how to do that.

The concert was really fun!! I don't know what it is about Celtic music... but I really love the melodies and the base-lines. We brought a little picnic dinner and joined some friends; and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset!! It was nice!!

Deborah,

Great photos. The concert series sound really good. One thing about attendy series like that is the exposure to new music types, music that I would not otherwise hear.

About the crossed yellow thing. I think that happens some times as a glitch in the AR server. I am going to flag the post to check the points. Although probably they would fix it in time anyway.

My wife and I lived in San Diego briefly when we first married. I was stationed at the Naval Base.

Celtic music is so good. I agree. The local public station has a Celtic hour on Sunday afternoons.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for reading and commenting... it always helps to get input & feedback.

My son was stationed at the amphibious base in San Diego when he was in the Navy. He's a civilian now, working for the Navy. San Diego's a great place to live because there is so much to do here. You can go to beach one day, the desert the next and then off to the mountains, etc... And with home prices dropping (or should I say-plummeting) it's becoming much more affordable for those who couldn't do it before. I was doing a MLS search this morning and found houses, not condos, for less than $200K. Pretty amazing....

I noticed that you're from Tennessee--is Chattanooga close to Knoxville? We have some family in Knoxville. My husband recently visited there and he loved it. The pictures he brought back were very beautiful--we really like rural areas (even though we don't currently live in one).

I appreciate you flagging the post--I sent an email to AR to ask about it. It may have been something I did. Still getting used to all the bells & whistles.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Deborah!

Sorry to be getting back to you so late with instructions on how to post to Localism. Here is a blog with instructions on how to post to Localism in your area. Hi Deborah,

The link works when I click on it...I wonder why it's not working for you?  When you checkmark a category for localism, general information usually doesn't work for some reason. Choose one of the other categories and then make sure to click your region, etc at the bottom.

Oh, I see you now have it posted to Localism so it worked. Fantastic!!

Thank you so much, Jo-Anne. I really appreciate your guidance (and patience). I did select "general information" under localism originally, but I changed it, and apparently that worked. I hope your comment above helps others to understand how to post to Localism, too. BTW--I've only read a few posts--but there are some really good articles entered in this contest. Much applause....

FAbulous sunset!  I was in Oceanside about 15 years ago.  This brings back memories for me.  Had an aunt who was doing poorly and my mother was trying to take care of her.  Since my MOTHER was also not well, I went with her.  BEAUTIFUL area - the weather was spectacular!  I remember that coming from a sticky summer on the East Coast. Somehow, I didn't know about the volcano.  Wish I had had a chance to hike there.

Deborah...It's so nice to see that there are plenty of fun and inexpensive things to do!

Hi Ruthmarie,

Any plans to visit the San Diego area again? We do have great weather here... right now we have a beautiful ocean breeze and sunny skies, not too hot, not too cold, just right!! My cats are very happy with the breeze--they always find the coolest place in our condo to sleep. Yeah, not many people know about Mount Calavera--even our locals don't know about it. I love your header on your blog page; and that you cater to people and pets. That's fantastic. I'm guessing you have a few pets of your own. Thanks for visiting and have a great day!

Hi Joan, in these times, I'm all about saving $$. And you're right, we always seem to find fun things to do in this area without spending a lot of money. When the kids were young, we took them to the beach for the day. A little food, a little sunblock and we had a great time. With our mild weather we can do a lot outdoors. I spoke to someone from Washington state the other day, and she said that she wouldn't like living here because she feared that she would always want to "play". She has a good point. Thanks for commenting!

Deborah - Great post! I'm your neighbor just abit to the north and you have my mouth watering for a visit to Stone. I'll definitely say hi to your son.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for commenting on my post. You will love Stone! It's a great place to go for a special meal because of its uniqueness and ambience; and of course, if you're a beer drinker, you'll love that the most, I'm sure.

And by the way, I'm the anonymous person who commented on your post. I didn't realized that I wasn't logged in when I wrote it. Well, again, I really liked they way you portrayed the Temecula Valley and your enthusiam for the area.

Have a great day!

Deborah - Mystery solved! That's great. Maybe we'll meet at Stone for a beer one of these days...

6:35pm • #18

Hi Tom,

Yeah, give me a call when in you're in the area. That would be fun to get together at Stone and talk real estate. I don't drink beer though--but I love a good glass of wine--the men in my family are the beer drinkers!

Happy 4th of July!

Hi Georgina,

You are so right that you need a lot of time in San Diego... I only mentioned the things that came to my  mind first--and places that are close to where I live and work. I didn't mention places to the south of me like Sea World, the San Diego Zoo & Wild Animal Park, our beautiful museums in Balboa Park, and the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego-to name a few. And to the north, see Tom Plant's post. Temecula is a great place to hang-out, too. All these places are within a 60 mile radius which makes them easy to get to.

But, I see that you are writing from Maui--now that's got to be paradise! I've been to Oahu (I was born there), but I hear that Maui is the island to see when visiting Hawaii. I'd like to see it for myself some day. :)

Happy 4th of July!

Deb, you've got great talking points, but I have to tell ya' it's the eye candy in that last shot that really makes my evening! That sunset is outrageously gorgeous!

9:57pm • #23

Carolyn,

Thanks for commenting... yeah, we have great sunsets here! This evening, when I was leaving my office, the sun looked huge hanging over the coast--it was bright orange and it demanded your attention which I gladly gave. What a treat!

Sweetie, you need to keep your digital camera with you so you can capture that eye candy and share it with the family. I, for one, am addicted to eye candy... I bet I'm not the only one either. Clint and Poppy D. have got it goin' on. You should get in on it too. Why not do a tour of your favorite things in the neighborhood? What do you think? Deb, I bet you'd do a bang up job at it!

11:32pm • #25

It's funny you suggested that! After writing this blog and reading all the other blogs that were entered in the contest, I was inspired by the effort that many agents have taken to learn more about their own communities. It made me want to start carrying my digital camera around with me!! Then I saw your blog with all the beautiful homes in Queens County, and again, was inspired to get out there to take pictures. Thanks, Carolyn!! (You must be a night owl.)

Deb, I am wired for the wee hours. It's a Riker's Island thing. My hubby works from 3PM to 11:30 PM so if I want some face time I've got to be up for that midnight entrance. :-D

The things I discover on Active Rain! I had no idea there was a volcano in San Diego! And I used to live in Orange County -- took trips to San Diego all the time.

Elizabeth, I was surprised to learn that it was there, too. Apparently, there is another one on Camp Pendleton, which is a little to the north of us; and one more (but I can't remember where that one is except that it is in So. Cal.) Now keep in mind--these are extinct volcanoes--the experts assure us that there is no potential for them to blow. :) It really is a neat area, we hike out there all the time.

Lovely! The next time you hike out, how about some photos of your trip? Should make for an interesting blog series... and with those sunsets, wow!

Deb, a three part volcano series, would that be possible? If so, how unique! :-)
