The County officially reached over 1 million people in 2020.

2020 Upcounty Population

 10 year Growth Rate

Germantown        91,249         6%

Gaithersburg        69,657       16%

Mont. Village        34,893         9%

Clarksburg           29,051      111%

Damascus           17,224        13%

Poolesville            5,742           9%

Both Gaithersburg and Damascus experienced double-digit growth. As growth in Germantown level off to 6%, Clarksburg population more than doubled in the past ten years with 111% growth.

What does this mean for the Upcounty?

All federal, state and county electoral boundaries are redrawn every 10 years based on census data. In 2020 Montgomery County voters approved an increase in the number of County Council seats from nine to eleven, with seven district seats up from five. The County's Redistricting Commission is required to make their recommendations by mid-November. Given the growth we've experienced, it seems that one of the additional seats needs to be in the Upcounty to accommodate this growth.

Hello Roy - we will continue to learn more as the results of the latest census become known.  While some will be expected, there is always much that is "new".  Sometimes that is not immediately known but such subtle shifts can become a part of history.
