Quick Ways to Refresh Your Kitchen Without Renovation

Updating your kitchen can increase its functionality and also raise the value of your home. However, renovations can be costly and time-consuming — especially now, when residential contractors are still scrambling to adjust to unprecedented supply chain concerns.

Luckily, your kitchen doesn’t need a full remodel to feature a new look. Looking to put off more expensive renovations? Here are some ways to give your space a refresh without all the hassle.

1. Paint Your Walls

Painting can be a simple way to make your space feel more welcoming and give your room an updated look. Try to find colors that match your cabinets, or consider painting your walls white to create a clean appearance. This also allows you to play around with patterned countertops and backsplashes.

Apply painter’s tape to your wall trim before wielding that brush or roller, and then lay a canvas dropcloth on the floor. Also, drape your large objects, like your cabinets, with plastic sheeting. This will protect them from any splattered paint.

2. Upgrade Your Cabinets

Instead of replacing your cabinets, consider adding new hardware. Replace old knobs with more updated ones. There are multiple types available, such as wire pulls or hexagon knobs. First, determine if you want a knob or pull and choose your ideal style. Do you want one that is curved or square-shaped? Look for handles that will blend well with your type of cabinetry.

Another way to spruce up your cupboards is to repaint them. This can help brighten up your space without remodeling. White and gray are suitable hues for creating a calming feeling, while vibrant blue tones give the room more personality.

Also, consider taking down a few cabinets to create open shelving. This can make the area feel more spacious and makes it easier to grab cooking items.

3. Replace Your Floors

Your kitchen floors can become worn down over time. Consider updating them to give the space a new look. You have multiple flooring options to choose from.

Here are some of the most common flooring types:

  • Hardwood: This type of flooring comes in many available styles and is easy to update. However, it’s not waterproof and can be slippery.
  • Tile: Tile is a good option because of its durability and water resistance. However, these do require some maintenance and should be professionally installed.
  • Vinyl: This material is also waterproof and good for homeowners who enjoy DIY projects. However, it’s a softer material and is vulnerable to scratches and dents.
  • Laminate: Laminate flooring can mimic the look of hardwood at a lower cost. It can also be installed without a professional if you have experience. However, it’s not as durable or water-resistant as other options.

4. Add a Rug

Adding a rug can break up your flooring. It can also allow you to add some color to the space. Plus, while cooking, it can provide comfort for your feet. Consider placing a fun-patterned kitchen runner in front of your lower cabinets. Look for one that is machine washable.

When choosing a rug, consider the size and material. Also, try to match it with your other kitchen decor by selecting similar colors to your walls or cabinets.

5. Replace the Faucet

An old sink can make your kitchen look outdated and be less functional. Consider upgrading your faucet for a quick fix with big impact. Brass is an excellent option for its durability. Solid stainless steel is also a suitable option but can be more expensive.

Look for faucets with low-flow fixtures, which can conserve water and lower your bills. They can reduce your water usage by 30%-50%.

6. Add New Lights

Since you may spend a majority of your time in the kitchen, you need sufficient lighting. Consider updating some of your main fixtures and adding recessed lights under your cabinets. You also want to place lighting over cooking surfaces, at the sink and over your table. While you’re at it, replace your bulbs with LEDs for better energy efficiency.

7. Upgrade Your Appliances

Consider adding stainless steel appliances for a modern look. It’s a durable material that is easy to clean and works with many kitchen styles.

Also, consider investing in Energy Star-rated appliances for better efficiency. These are better for the environment and save you money on your electricity bills. Switching to an energy-efficient dishwasher can save you around $25 a year
