Agents Leave Because of the Leader. Not the Company.

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

I read a post that Kathy Streib featured in in her “Ah-ha” moments by Grant Schneider entitled “You don’t need agents. You need the right agents!”  Grant is an excellent Leadership and Business Coach and his posts are always worth the read and this post resonated with me.

I often refer to teresa recar, our broker, as "Our Fearless Leader." Our office is amazing and she always calls our office; “The most fabulous NW office.” Why? Because it is!!

How did we get that way? I credit Teresa with having a clear picture of what we stand for and she won’t settle for anything less than an agent who shares the same vision, values and mission. It's all about our culture!

Teresa was recently interviewed by our Texas VP, Greg Rand and I firmly believe she nailed it! They talked about a variety of topics including culture. Take time to listen to this interview and you will see why our office is truly “The most fabulous NW office.”

If you took the time to listen to the interview you will hear something so profound....it’s what we all know and expect from our leader....”If you are not nice you don’t GET  to work here.” We celebrate our successes and we collaborate with each other. If that doesn’t fit your agenda you need to find another office! Teresa says "Agents leave because of the leader. Not because of the company." I firmly believe she is right.

Hi Dorie:

What a powerful interview! I liked everything Teresa said...she is right on target, as so many are not who are in her position. You are indeed fortunate to be in that office.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. ,

It's unfortunate when a leader can't be a leader and bring an office together. You found the right place..good for you!

You can trust me for all your real estate needs!

I agree, I feel it starts with the leader, shortly followed by chemistry and then the company needs to have to have a good base model to follow.

It all in the leader attracting agents and then retaining them because they  feel it is worth it. Thank you Erik for stopping by

Dorie, between my Navy days, corporate America days and real estate I've worked for the entire range of leaders and have learned something from each one, even if that lesson is how NOT to do things.  At this point in my life, I'm not really looking for leadership, just give me the tools I need to do my job (whatever that job may be) and offer help when/if I ask for it.  Bill

Leadership sets the presidence of the running of the company.  Lack of strong leadership will kill the motivations of the best agents.

Poor leadership is certainly the primary reason realtors leave. Often over commission split as well.  Last brokerage the broker sold to another broker left policy the same.  A year later an office manager was brought in. I do not have problem with the manager but 65 others thought she was a pain.   Got a call from previous broker. Sam you are still there there are just 5 agents and 4 others just hang their license so they do not care office is closed.  I recommend this brokerage.  Good luck.

You are right Sam Shueh . Poor leadership can sink a brokerage faster than anything.

Circumstances determine who we work for and who knows how a leader will act until you work with him? If all leaders were exceptional, we wouldn't need a  Realtor code of ethics, and yes, I agree agents leave companies because of their leadership.

Leadership is critical. Leadership, however, does not mean providing leads - a big difference but many hungry agents simply expect someone else to bring them the work. Strong leaders encourage personal growth.

I couldn't agree more! Encouraging growth and providing the tools sets an agent up for success.

I think that this generally applies across the board. Real estate especially is a field of relationships and it holds true that the relationships in one's office should be just as important. Like the clients that we serve, we too need to chase our joy.
