Mohonk Mountain House was built in 1869 and has been family operated ever since.  It's located in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York state and is near New Paltz.  It overlooks a glacier lake where you can swim, canoe or fish.

Here's another view of the hotel from the lake.  I was told that this is the only lake in the area where life exists-acid rain has decimated the other lakes in the region.

Here's one of my favorite photos.  Notice how the roots are stretching to find water.  It always amazes me how the tree does it.  And then I think of how we humans find so many reasons why we can't what we need...like people to do business with us)

On the last morning of my stay, the clouds were cutting through the mountains.  I went for a walk and ended up walking in the cloud....and this is what it looked like.

if you like to hike, you'll love this hotel.  Check them out on-line at www.mohonk.com

Nancy, I love the Mohonk Mountain House, it is like a fairly tale. even when you're there, you just feel like it can't be real. btw, I got confused about why you posted this until you mentioned: On the last morning of my stay

just think for less than the price of one night's stay, you could have a rent controlled apartment in midtown manhattan for a whole month :-)
