Champlin is a river town located 18 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The Mississippi River runs 1/8 mile wide throughout Champlin. The city was named after U.S. Navy Commodore Stephen Champlin who was active in the war against England and Canada in 1812. He was also involved in the establishing of the Canadian/U.S. boundaries. The Father Hennepin Festival, held yearly each June, honors the origin of Champlin by Father Louis Hennepin, Michael Accult, and Peter Dula. It became an Indian trading post, then in 1852 became the first official settlement, known as the Old Town with a theater, blacksmith, boarding house, pool hall, and having their own undertaker. The Dunning School, which was open from 1876-1947, is still standing and can be viewed during the annual Ice Cream Social of the Father Hennepin Festival. The Champlin Milling Company was first built in 1867, then rebuilt in 1874 as the original building slipped off its foundation. An exhibit of flour was sent to the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893 receiving its highest award. Champlin has a population of over 24,000 residents and has close access to US 169 and CR 12. It is in Anoka-Hennepin School District 11. The Champlin Community Services is devoted to enhancing leisure time in the city. There are many opportunities for kids of all ages from the Andrews Park Splash Pad to the annual trout Ice Fishing Contest. There are beautiful walking trails and with the riverfront redevelopment completed, greater access to more of the mighty Mississippi.
