Thankful, thankful, thankful
Tis' the season thankfulness is on our minds! But why does thankfulness matter? What if we don't feel we have anything to be thankful for?
Even on my worst days, I am thankful I'm still breathing. That's about a basic as thankfulness gets!
And why does thankfulness matter?
Why not?
I see it this way. Every moment we have a choice. We can choose to be bitter and caught in negative mind chatter or we can say, "You know what, I choose to be thankful."
I remember hearing Oprah Winfrey read a page from her gratitude journal from decades ago. She had written about sherbert ice cream and a funny conversation with her best friend. Her memory reminded me of a moment I'm forever thankful for.
I was getting my bird-watching badge at summer camp in the Shenandoah Valley. I was 11 years old, laying on the grass watching a bird through a pair of binoculars. It was quiet except for the wind in the trees. At that moment, I became so thankful to be there. Thankful for the camp, the teachers, the opportunity to be in such a beautiful place. I was filled with quiet joy.
Thankfulness feels quiet, reflective, and even reverent. In fact, numerous studies show thankfulness is good for our mental and physical health. Dr. Andrew an integrative medicine physician and author says keeping a journal of what you're thankful for will improve your attitude.
Here's a cute children's video called, Thankful by The Juicebox Jukebox 2021.
