"Exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain's release of a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused."
This time of year, as the temperatures dip and the winter attire comes out, I am reminded how grateful I am for 300 days with sunshine in the Wenatchee valley. In the interest of full disclosure, we don't have 300 days with full sunshine. Sometimes it's cloudy or foggy but eventually, the sun does peek out for a while. Even a little sunshine is a welcome sight on those otherwise dreary winter days.
Wenatchee has 4 distinct seasons which I love. The older I get the less I like winter but even in winter, the sunshine shows itself most days. When Max and I were young we used to ski during the winter. Mission Ridge, our local ski hill is just 12 miles from town. We always felt a little smug when we'd head to the mountain in less than ideal conditions only to discover the hill was above the clouds. We usually packed a lunch and on those sunny days, we'd find a big rock to sit on when it was time to take a lunch break.
After Max developed Parkinson's Disease his confidence to ski waned. He said his brain would tell him to turn but his body didn't respond. That's when we knew it was time to turn in the skis, pack up the golf clubs, and head for our winter dose of sunshine elsewhere. Our favorite destination was Palm Springs, California. We did that for many years and loved it. I still make those winter trips and enjoy meeting up with friends for golf and other fun stuff.
In the Spring, Summer, and Fall we are blessed with plentiful sunshine AND warm temperatures. It's a nice long golf season.
This is my 5th entry into the November Challenge, hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS .

Thanks to my friends at RMPhotoz for allowing me to use their beautiful Wenatchee winter sunset photo.
Carol that is a gorgeous view in your featured picture. Is that in Wenatchee?

Hello Carol Williams I was wondering about the photo ... you made me wait until the end to find out! So during the winter, your area is covered with snow. I can see why you like to go to Palm Springs.

The sun broke through Sacramento fog mid-day today. And, it was a testament to the elevation of mood I enjoyed. We're supposed to have a repeat tomorrow.

That is a great photo Carol Williams , I am glad that they let you share it with us as well. I have a "full spectrum" light on my desk that helps me get through the short days of winter. I think it really helps. At home (as I sit here) I have a frame of 4' LED lights surrounding me. It's really bright but it helps me feel alive.

Hello Carol - I appreciate your "full disclosure" of 300 days of sunshine in your area. Sometimes it's about marketing and sometimes it's about real life. 😎

How wonderful to have all that sunshine! It is very sunny here all summer long, but the winter does have a lot of cloudy days. But as with your description of the ski experience, sometimes we have sun but we can see the valley is covered in clouds. We love when that happens.

Hi Kathy Streib
Your comment made me laugh because Max used to say that about going back to southern Alberta where he grew up. Our annual trips up there at Thanksgiving time cured him of that each year. I remember one year we got stuck in a snowdrift in his sister's driveway at night. We had to walk a ways to the house and wake up his brother-in-law to come dig us out. We were always happy to get back to Wenatchee, where we may have cold and snowy but it isn't windy in the winter. LOL
Hi Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist
The town is not covered in snow the whole winter, like it used to be. When I first moved her in 1971 it would snow as early as Halloween and not totally melt until Spring. Now, the snow comes and goes throughout the winter. The ski hill is usually open as early as Thanksgiving through March and sometimes into April. We've been known to ski and golf on the same day. 😃
Hi Myrl Jeffcoat
I've driven through some pretty bad fog in the Sacramento area but the worst was over the Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon. Heavy fog is my least favorite driving condition.
Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm
The light sounds like a good idea. Whatever it takes to get through those dreary days, right?

Hi Michael Jacobs
Yes, I make that distinction between "with sun" and "of sun". The Chamber of Commerce touts 300 days OF sun when it's actually only "with" sun part of the day.

Hi Kat Palmiotti
January is our least sunny month and my favorite time to head south. I have many friends who go south for 4 - 6 months but I really only care to get away for 4 - 6 weeks.

Good Sunday morning, Carol.
Take care, be safe and enjoy the holiday season.
I have become accustomed to sunshine and never want to be without it, haha. I don't own many cold-weather clothes so I have to stay where it is warm.
Happy Sunday, Carol!
First, I'm so glad they shared the photo as I would never gotten to see your beautiful city through the eyes of their photographer!
Palm Springs is amazing and I would totally love to spend my winters there. I can understand why you and Max did.
Last week, I mentioned to Ray that as we age, our bodies don't respond as quickly as our minds, allowing us to be a bit more klutzy than in our earlier years. I totally get Max's comment and think this happened for a reason. You carried on the tradition of traveling for golf - even taking you across the US to do so in 2021!
And, like you, I LOVE that we have four seasons here in Charlotte...and there's only one I would be happy if it was shortened - winter!!
Hi Carol... that's quite an amazing photo. Having lived in northern Europe where the sun rarely shines in winter, I get that desire to head to warmer and sunnier climes.
That is a incredible photo you chose Carol. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post my friend 🙂
