Thanksgiving Challenge - Thankful for Learning

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

Thanksgiving... Today, as we celebrate a National Holiday, I wish you the happiest Thanksgiving Day and to thank you for the gratitude I feel for the things in life that have made me feel safer, healthier, and more successful.

I am thankful... For those in the industry of saving lives by implementing better and safer building construction, roads, and infrastructure, thank you for keeping everyone safer. If you are in the medical field saving lives in crises or rescuing people and animals from loss of life, I am profoundly thankful because you make loved ones more grateful. When it comes to life, there is no greater gift than anything store bought, homemade, or manufactured. For the people with competency skills that teach with truth, honesty, encouragement so that others can learn how important it is to know that doing things right means more to others than just helping them get through a course, continuing education, or making the grade.

Especially Grateful... I feel especially thankful to those instructors who don’t deviate from course materials and lectures substituting text material for opinions or stories about why they differ from what they are supposed to teach and students begin to realize, there is nothing in the materials or handouts that have any connection to what the instructor is saying. To be taught by passionate teachers who understand that forming your own opinion may be interesting, it isn’t the foundation of the basics people need to know who are learning.

Pearls of Wisdom... I would be remiss if I didn’t share something about safety. I am deeply grateful for the driving instructor from Driver’s Ed who gave me the most important lesson about life when I was a student in High School. With just a few words, that man changed my perception of what it means to be behind the wheel. He said, you passed…. Every time you get behind a wheel remember you are a potential killer. Always be aware of your surroundings and never take driving for granted.

What I learned... As the years went by, I applied what I learned to other things in life I do for a living, such as a sales agent in real estate. My clients are in the driver’s seat and I serve their needs providing guidance and information about things that matter and what they need to know about contract law before they sign, always mindful of what I say and what I do because as a REALTOR®, no matter what I think, the most important thing I can give my clients is following the Code of Ethics.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone... When I say I am thankful, it comes from the heart…Patricia Feager

Hello Patricia - your post today brought me back to my high school driver education class many decades ago.  It was a "place" I had not visited for some time.

Words from teachers of all kinds can inspire us.  Sometimes in the moment.  And then there are those occasions when they are remembered for other reasons.

I don't particularly recall any such words from the instructors(we had two) but the advice that comes to your mind in this post is always good as drivers need to be and  stay aware.

Michael Jacobs - starting as a child I sat in the backseat of too many cars where my feet couldn't touch the floor and I'd pray while the driver was drunk behind the wheel. I never knew how I survived.

Before getting my Driver's License it began as a ticket to freedom. Those words by my instructor pierced through my heart and brought in my reality as it flood my mind with memories. To this day I remembered what he said and I'm very aware of drivers and my surroundings.

My cousin's daughter was killed while she and her friends from college were drinking and driving. She was the only one that died but the others were critically injured. It was a painful lesson for the schools and community.

Happy Thanksgiving Patricia! I, too, had a few wonderful teachers in my life who had quite the impact on me, most recently the CIPS professor, and I am grateful to all.

Andrea Bedard - CIPS is a tough course! There's a lot to learn from CIPS and it's best to learn from the wonderful teachers who teach to learn. I wish you the best in your new CIPS designation! It's something I wanted but learned quickly, just because you want something, doesn't mean you should get it, if the level of competency is above your comprehension. I am very proud of you and happy for your success!

Happy Thanksgiving, Patricia.
Your driver's ed story reminded me of my motorcycle safety class. The instructor told us to drive as though we are invisible to other drivers because they might not see us! That always stuck with me.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, Patricia.

Carol Williams - That was good advice! When my spouse was alive he warned me about keeping the distance from motorcycle drivers and trucks! I am always in fear when I see other driver's too close or driving recklessly around motorcycles or especially six-wheelers who can't see you when you pass. I do believe that when something sticks so hard and you know it's true, it worth passing on to others.

I can say “yes” to all of the things you are thankful for in this post.  Over the moon thankful for instructors that actually teach and do not deviate to shove their personal agenda.

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - I hope you had a meaningful Thanksgiving and that you receive an abundance of blessings.
It is unfortunate when instructors hold the right to teach but have their own agendas. It's such a disservice and unfortunately happens more often than we think. For example, I recently caught up with an old friend whom I haven't seen in about 20 years. She is the same age as my daughter and teaches history in the local schools in my area. We got on the topic of a sensitive subject about a time period where I lived through those life events, and I knew she wasn't even alive; but was telling me things that weren't true. I don't know if I'll ever see her again, but she scared me as I listened to hear false naratives. When I tried to share my experience, and how it differed, she gave me the look.... Yep, I don't think she'll be contacting me again soon.

Oh, we always seem to be on the same page, Patricia! Like you, I am thankful for learning and for those who don't inject their personal 'beliefs' into their lessons.

LOVE what your driver's ed teacher said - that is SO true! What is so commendable is that you remember what he said all these years later. I don't even remember what my DE instructor looked like, muchless anything he said!! LOL

Thank you so much for sharing so much of you with us during this month's challenge. Your posts always inspire me to be a better writer - you are AMAZING!

Good morning Patricia! This post covered a lot of things to be grateful for. Teachers who teach and let us make our own opinions, people who give us lessons that stay with us forever like the driving instructor, and the ability for continuous learning!

I hope your day-after-Thanksgiving is wonderful!
