This Week...Turkey and Traditions

What a week!  Today is Saturday but since there were football and basketball games yesterday (Friday) I kept thinking yesterday was Saturday.

It takes an endless amount of history to make even a little tradition. Henry James

There was a lot of talk about tradition on Thanksgiving, which was fun. Larry’s family tradition involved homemade rolls with a wrapped coin in the center. It has now become one for our family and the children look forward to it!!!

Science and technology revolutionize our lives, but memory, tradition and myth frame our response. Arthur M. Schlesinger

MInd you, we have to watch carefully as the youngest ones break open their rolls! We don’t want anyone to choke!

Growing up in Texas, there was the longstanding tradition of the Texas-Texas A&M game which was played on Thanksgiving Day.

Tradition is the illusion of permanence.

 Woody Allen

That ended in 2011 when A&M joined the SEC. It took me several years to recover.

Traditions are interesting. We hold onto them often for no other reason other than “it’s a tradition!”  New ones enter our lives without us knowing it, and before you know it...a new tradition is born.

Tradition is a guide and not a jailer.

  1. Somerset Maugham

Have a fun weekend making new traditions.

When we were kids, the tradition was to go and freeze through the Thanksgiving football games and come home and eat dinner while still trying to feel for our feet

Kathy I think the tradition of the homemade rolls with the wrapped coin is a great idea, and I can see how the kids would be excited about it.  However, if someone failed to get the message about the coin, it could easily be a quick way of losing  a tooth ...... LOL

Wayne Martin so very true. Until finally someone asks us why we have this tradition and no one can provide an answer.

Sham Reddy CRS I did, thank you!!!  I'm still recovering from all of the preparation.

Kat Palmiotti I agree. When someone wants to take away one of our traditions, I get uncomfortable.

Brian England we would watch over you!!! The kids break the roll open (as they should) and then they find the coin. One thing we have to do is make sure they don't open all of the rolls for the money.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I have to agree. We hold onto them especially when we see so many things around us changing.

George Souto I agree!!! That's why the kids get the rolls with the coins and the parents /adults stand there and watch while they break them open.

Kathy Streib what a fun tradition.  This inquiring mind wants to know. You know I ask questions when I need more information.  What are the coins inside the roll wrapped with?

Hi Kathy Streib
It must be all those football games that have me confused on what day it is.  I almost didn't get Second Chance Saturday scheduled in time.  LOL

Having a large family must be such a blessing because those traditions can go on for generations.

Our only Thanksgiving tradition was a big meal with whichever kids could be here. Sometimes my brother and his wife came and sometimes we had a few random orphan friends. Like so many others, we loved all the leftovers. Now that I'm an empty-nester I don't have any traditions. Each year seems a little different. Some other widowed friends and I went out to the Country Club for their Thanksgiving Feast this year. It was awesome but no leftovers. Ever since Thursday, I've been tempted to make a meal with all my favorite things anyway. I might still do it.  😊

Hi Kathy:

It's always fun to read about the traditions that people have for Thanksgiving. I like the coin in the roll idea!

We made our annual cookies with the grandkids on Saturday...a total of over 200! Now they sit in canisters to season, along with some occasional taste-testing.

My dad was from Mississippi and there is a long tradition of a Thanksgiving weekend Mississippi State - Ole Miss game as well. It was fun to watch even though my dad went to neither school. He only had a 3rd grade education
