Put Your muscle where Your mouth is!

Originally I was going to title this "Put your money where your mouth is" but I'm old enough and wise enough to know that the following demand is someone asking the government to use my money, NOT theirs.

In the 1970's the City of Minot took on a huge project to thwart the damage from future flooding of the Mouse River which flows through the heart of the city. Part of this monstrous project was to "straighten out" the river by cutting a new, wider and straighter path to let the water get through the city ASAP.

This was a great and effective idea (until 2011) BUT what do you do with those now cut off sections of the original river bed?

The answer, back then, was to label them as dead loops and to manage the water flow in and out of them to add to the over-all flood mitigation. Sounds good but in the 20 years I've lived here I have never seen them introduce river water into the loops nor have I ever seen them regulate water out of them and into the river. As it is they collect water from run-off and dry out (which I have not seen completely) from drought like effects.

As I see it they have been totally ineffective as a tool to collect and release water back into the Souris River. What they do collect is this:

Tires, discarded concrete, dead trees, litter, and outright garbage.

Many people, including myself, would like to see the dead loops filled in with dirt, not garbage. This would end a 60 year failed experiment and greatly beautify the city of Minot. This would add a lot of space to the parks that are bordering the loops and it would add Real Estate value to homes that border the dead loops.

Enter the "Save the dead loops" group. Yes there truly is such a group. My advice and question for the group is that if you want to save the dead loops and you want to get others behind the cause "why aren't you out there cleaning them up?"

Why not use some of that muscle power that to this point has only powered your yapping jaws into backbone power and beautify the loops so that more people come to your side of the argument?

An alternative suggestion I would make to the city of Minot is, you have been looking to expand the city landfill... the dead loops are already filling up with garbage, why not fill the dead loops up to near full and then cover them up with dirt? Kill two birds with one stone... unless the Save The Dead Loops gang get off their butts and bend their knees to actually pick up the trash to beautify the area they want to save.

That's a thought Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 . In 2011 we had that 100 year flood, destroyed 1/3 of the homes in town (including mine) and also the water treatment facility... thus raw sewage ran through the city for a month.

Bob the stupidity is hard to comprehend but keep in mind you are dealing with politicians who are not looking out for you  but to fatten their wallets... now with that said can I tell you about the Los Angeles river??? the short answer is way back when they  paved it with cement... really and now for the past ten years they are in the process of turning it back to nature.... it would be three blog post to fill you in, Endre

So many things in the world that should be done but don't get done because people want to fight about what should be done rather than just doing something about it.

Good morning Bob- that would be a tall order for politicians to actually get some of their own skin in the game rather than yours.

Bob,

Endre Barath, Jr. said it and the cementing of the Los Angeles river created underground rivers that made buildings hard to build and maintain.  The building our office was in had underground parking.  We had spaces on the 4th floor, and every year they would have the recoat the walls to keep water from seeping in..  And cementing the river was part of the drought problem.  In Napa when the river flooded, we saw refrigerators, and other stuff float up...A

I am one that will pitch in and help with a clean-up cause. However, it needs to be with a plan and the cities full participation.

What people do to nature, animals, and other people is heartbreaking.

We really cannot fix stupid or the greed behind political decisions.

That does sound interesting Endre Barath, Jr. . I realize that these dead loops would been to be tied into the sewer system with culverts and that would cost a lot of money as well but it sure would improve the apperance of the city.

That is true even when both sides want the same results Brian England but each thinks they have the best way to achive those results.

It would be a tall order Grant Schneider . Not everyone in the Dead Loop Gange is a politician but of the names I know on their roster they all have their noses up in the air with the attitude "It's our idea, YOU do the work" (or pay for it).

Nina Hollander, Broker to get a politician to admit failure, even after 50 years of proof that it's a failure, is impossible. Just look at socialism.

Bill Salvatore - YVP Blog when we purchased our home no one in the city was required to purchase flood insurance due to the measures the city took back in the 70's. Fifty years later we had a 500 year flood that destroyed 1/3 of the town.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel thanks for a very vivid picture of what seemed to be a good idea gone bad. Of course these are dead loops and no longer part of the river but I can still see something like that happening.

I do as well Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty . You wouldn't think it would take much more that concerned home owners living along the dead loops to clean up their areas. Of course it could be that they are contributing as well by tossing yard waste and more in themselves.

Well said Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist . If I had a friend who lived on a dead loop and they asked me to help with their lot area I'd be there in a heartbeat.

The "dead loops" of the Mississippi River, as it changes course, has produced wonderful oxbow lakes that thrive with fish. I wonder how beautiful that area would be, if it was in its natural state...
