You Gotta Believe...

There is no doubt that the most important factor in success for all sales activities can be summarized in one word -- attitude. You will not succeed unless you believe that you will succeed. The same concept applies to marketing activities. If you do not believe that a marketing activity will work, it is doubtful you will implement the activity in such a way that you will achieve maximum effectiveness.

For example, what is the likelihood that an agent will undertake the necessary activities to ensure that all goals will be reached if they are holding an open house out of obligation to the seller rather than as an opportunity to pick up new prospective purchasers for this house and more? Certainly they are much less likely to prepare effectively if they are unenthusiastic about the prospects for success. If you believe in the concept of open houses, you want to tell the world.

How many marketing activities such as newspaper or internet listings do we undertake because we feel they "put on a good show" rather than being effective? An internet listing may only be effective if you help drive traffic to the listing. Why go above and beyond for what is considered a marketing obligation rather than a marketing opportunity?

On the other hand, blind support for marketing activities is not warranted. How many felt they were going to get rich by building their own website? It would be like putting a net in the water and scooping out fish! Well, this fantasy faded quickly for many. For others, who took the time to construct a valuable site and drive traffic to it, the dream just kept building.

A realistic and positive attitude is a necessary starting point for implementing all marketing plans.

John, You are exactly right, but sometimes a real "attitude" will hurt a business and a client agent relationship beyond repair.

I wish more people in business, not just Realtors would take the content of your blog seriously, its like looking in the mirror every day, taking stock and saying "Its a great day and will only get better"

We reflect our attitude with body language, speech patterns and words both spoken and written.

You must be passionate about what you do.  If you are not - it will not work.

Thank you for the responses.  I agree that you have to be passionate and believe in what you do.  Too many people, in all lines of work, look at is a job instead of a career.  Sometimes it's easier said than done, but it all starts with attitude and hopefully the rest will follow.  Personally, I love what I do.  It helps my business and my personal life.  If I love what I do, I am not cranky when I get home.

Today for example, I went around and looked at open houses in my surrounding area.  It helps me understand what local real estate agents are doing to capture business.  It also helps when I am talking with a qualified buyer because I can make some suggestions on homes in the area.  It's a win/win and it only took about 2 hours out of my Saturday.
