When your Mayor goes "Undercover" as a Homeless Person

It is no secret homelessness is getting worse in every town across America!    With COVID, it sent more people to the streets.    We used to only see homeless in downtown Denver, and "tent cities" around parks and alleys.     Then one day I saw someone pushing a grocery cart with their "things" in Aurora.   Wow, they have moved into the suburbs I was thinking.

It wasn't long, and all along Parker Road near I-225 there are tents and "encampments" set up.

Mike Coffman was in both the Army and the Marines and served in the Gulf War.   He also served in Colorado's State House of Representatives, State Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives, in addition to being elected as Colorado State Treasurer and Secretary of State.   He is now our Mayor of Aurora and dedicated to making changes.

At our South Metro Board of REALTORS® this past Friday he was the guest speaker and started out by saying, he never wants to hear --- Buyers don't want to move to Aurora!    He then went into the homelessness issue, and shocked us all!    He decided to "take vacation" and told his staff -- under no circumstances are they to call him.   He went undercover to find out how these people ended up on the streets, and what he could do to correct the issue.

He was rather shocked.   Many he ran into had been on the streets for 10+ years, and had no desire to go back to a "normal life".    He stayed at shelters and encampments and said the homeless either do one or the other - NOT BOTH.   The encampments are pretty tight and don't let in new people often.  They take care of their own.   He said controlled substances were commonplace.

I have never heard of a government official doing this, and had to applaud him for doing this, but what will fix this issue if they want to stay on the streets and do drugs?

Joan Cox In Philadelphia it is also a huge problem . Some think it occurred when they shut down the mental hospital know as Byberry . It is sad especially in severe weather conditions . it is getting much worse with the onset of the economic conditions

Sounds like a mayor that wants to understand all aspects of the community

I applaud your mayor for wanting to get at the facts. However, I've been reading for years that some of the homeless simply do not want to be "rescued." They like living on the streets. To me that means they have mental issues - but maybe they think I do!

Homelessness is a huge problem, and I don't think anyone has the solution.

I think that is an amazing thing and I have suspected that most of the homeless people don't want to go back to a life with responsibilities.  I think that solutions can be put in place to provide for them while also helping those that want to get back on their feet to do so.

Hi Joan Cox - What an inspiring post about a true leader.  You can't solve problems if you don't go and find out what is going on.  I applaud your mayor.  Thanks for writing about this.

Michael Jacobs homelessness IS a huge issue, but if those living on the street don't want to live a normal life, not sure how it can be solved.

We "live" and learn.  I don't know what the mayor is thinking but those are some of my "thoughts.

Nina Hollander, Broker that is why I fear there is no solution for this issue.   I woke up the other night, and thought about this, and maybe having a certain location (a lot away from businesses) and they could stay there....    Not sure if anyone will find a solution when there are those not wanting to change.

Joan Cox hi Joan... I suspect that whatever is done, there will still be those who will insist on living on the streets. It's not something that can be mandated.

Hannah Williams and you have had some COLD weather.    That could be, but maybe COVID changed some situations too.

Marte Cliff I think that is what Mayor Coffman discovered, they LIKE living on the streets.   Lots less stress in life I guess.    They like doing the drugs, but not working.

Grant, I had often wondered why they stay on the streets, and was shocked to hear it firsthand.

Brian England some probably DO want to return to work, a home, etc., but some like it the way they are, which is just bizarre to me.   But, then again, responsibilities are not an issue for me.

Hi Joan- good for your mayor for seeking to understand. A very good friend of mine's son was seriously injured in a car accident that left him with neurological impairment. She told me that were it not for their presence and ability to pay for his care, he could have been one of the people we see out on the street.
