INFORMATION FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS IN TEXAS

Exemptions are a form of tax relief that can reduce the taxable value of your property. Types of exemptions include:

  • Homestead
  • Over 65 years of age
  • Disabled individuals
  • Disabled veterans
  • Agricultural

EXPLANATIONATION

If you own and occupy your new home, it is your homestead and you likely qualify for a homestead exemption. Tenants are not authorized to file for tax exemptions on property they rent. In Texas, this is the most common type of tax exemption. If you are new to the State of Texas you need to apply for exemptions by submitting a copy of your Texas Driver's License. The address on your driver's license must match the property address of the property you are filing the exemption for.

Investors may not apply for home exemptions if they are not occupying the property. Eligible homeowners must be occupying the property as their homestead on January 1st of the tax year in which the exemption is granted. It may be possible to apply for an exemption sooner. Please reach out to your county appraisal district to confirm the date that you may apply.

COST

The cost is free! Do not be scammed! If someone sends you something in the mail or calls you to file an exemption and asks for money, it is a scam! Filing for exemption is FREE. Forms can be downloaded on the Central Appraisal District's website for the county in which the property is located. The following county information is for all the counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex

Hi Patricia... your weekly roundups on Flower Mound are well written and a joy to read. Sadly, here in Charlotte area we have no homestead exemptions. As for the 25 mph speed limit, that is really slow. I don't speed but 25 is too slow for this New Yorker! :)))

Norma J. Elkins - Me too! I can't wait until the project is completed! I went to the library a couple of days ago and it was full of patrons - just like it was when I was a kid! I got lucky to sit in a Rocking Chair in front of the Fireplace to hear the crackling of wood and the smell and the warmth of the glowing fire. I read a book and enjoyed it very much! I really didn't want to leave.

Brian England - young and old alike will enjoy it! I can't wait!

Kat Palmiotti - Our Chamber of Commerce has Ambassadors that do ribbon cuttings for new businesses. Some I read about through Chamber news, others come in a variety of local papers, newsletters, flyers that come in the mail, the business section of our community, NextDoor, FaceBook, and of course word of mouth! Then I do my research and post what restaurants are new.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Main street speed limits haven't changed. These are just for residential neighborhoods which is a good thing! The reason why I had to replace my brick mailbox at the curb this past summer was because someone ran into my mailbox and knocked it apart! I live on one of the main streets that are shaped into a horseshoe curve and when drivers are driving too fast, they are lucky they don't get into a collision. Plus, we still have kids and dogs that venture out into the street on occasion. Yesterday, I was driving on one of our main roads and it was 70 mph.

George Souto - if your state doesn't have homestead exemptions for seniors, I would strongly propose it for legislature to your state. I'll tell you, it makes a significant savings all homeowners (regardless of age as long as they own) and a bigger savings to those who are 65 or older. Use Texas as an example!

Michael Jacobs - Thanks! I am glad to know you enjoy my slice of life!
