Words, Words, Words…Ready to Banish Some?

It’s that time of year again! Since 1976, Lake Superior State University has published a list of Banished Words. These are words that come not just from the University but are sent in from around the world.  Words that some would love to see banished.

What’s on the list???

-Wait, what?

-No worries

-At the end of the day

-That being said

-Asking for a friend

-Circle back

-Deep dive

-New normal

-You’re on mute

-Supply chain

There are a few on the list that I must admit to having used… some that don’t bother me…and some that I had to look up to see what they meant.

As you can imagine, most of last year’s words were related to that virus. If you’d like to see the lists from previous words you can head here.

On my Hall of Fame of Banished Words list…

-My bad (your bad what?)

-Just sayin’ (You’re saying what?)

-Me and Joe   (this is like nails on a chalkboard for me)

What about you?  Are there words or phrases that you would love to see, if not banished, at least not said in your presence??

"Supply chain" is not the word I would banish, and it was one of the qualifications required for some of my previous professions working in a manufacturing environment. Supply Chain Management was the most critical component that could make or break a manufacturing company relying on their goods to produce their end products to the mass. We see empty shelves in supermarkets and stores alike today because of Covid's effect causing inadequate supply chain management.

What has made me chuckle at times is when someone says - To be honest or just being honest.....🙃    So you're saying you're being honest right now but at times you aren't honest with me?

I'll go with Nina Hollander, Broker list too.

And one more thing!  When the  main stream media uses the same phrase (whatever it may be that day) over and over and over and over and over.  All of them do this - no matter what channel you happen to be on. It's so pathetic!

Hi Kathy Streib, there are a few words and phrases that just irk me, "rockstar agent" is on top of that list followed by "crushing it".

Nina Hollander, Broker

Beth Atalay hate those expressions, Beth. I wiped them from my mind, which is why I didn't list them in my comment.

Kathy I do not have a problem with removing those phrases.  However, I hear there are some who want to eliminate words like he, she, father, mother, etc. that I have a BIG problem with.

Kathy, I have never under "my bad", haven't ever used that, and think Nina's list is the best!

Carol Williams I love that you use "have you considered" instead of "you should"  I'm working on using that one.

Brian England ohhhhh - that one is so like nails on a chalkboard for me. I forgot to include that one.

Grant Schneider I can remember when people first started using "woke"...I had to look it up.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho LOL I used "me and Joe..." because I'm so tired of hearing people put their name first. It seems to be running rampant these days.  I just happened to pull the name Joe ....well I'd better not go there.

Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 ok, that was a good one!!!!  I really am getting tired of hearing that one.

Nina Hollander, Broker I'm with you on "follow the science" and "systemic racism"

Ron and Alexandra Seigel "Woke" is one that Brian England knows I cannot stand.

Hannah Williams I think we all have phrases that we say because we hear them so much.

Aura Alex Supply Chain is a word that has been used for years in businesses but has been used lately by everyday people talking about the lack of certain supplies on our shelves.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker I like Nina Hollander, Broker list as well. The problem with mainstream media is that with an exception or two there are no more journalists anymore...not like you and I remember. Instead of what experience or education they had, stations look at their "Q" factor. The late Peter Jennings regretted that he dropped out of high school. However, he made it his mission to educate himself on whatever he was covering. When you add to that the fact that no one wants to read anymore but rather watch videos...well you can tell where we're headed.

George Souto I have always felt that political correctness was highly overrated.  We are standing too near the edge here.

Joan Cox I cringe when I hear "my bad."

Am glad that murder hornets didn't take, though the media gave it a good effort, among other things. Would love for Rona to go away and a few others on your list, Kathy. Nina has some that should be banned as well. I do giggle when I hear mask-a-hole, however...it's that juvenile side that comes out occasionally.

Hello Kathy - I remember when you have taken this path in previous years but wonder about the banishing of words.  In the future, such a list may provide a perspective of life in 2021.  Now, I may "circle back" to some previous years to "test my thinking".

Honestly nothing came to mind for me.

I know "awesome" has been beaten to death and I believe was on a past year's list...I've made some effort at not using it anymore, but sometimes it still slips out.
