Powerful & Inspirational True Story

1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics

Who is Derek Redmond?

Words from the video:

Things don't always work out the way you'd like.

Derek Redmond was favored to medal in the Olympic 400-meter sprint.

150 meters into the race, Derek felt the searing pain.

In agony, he fell to the ground with a torn hamstring.

Not willing to give up, determined to finish the race, he continued.

Breaking through security, a man came to Derek's side.

It was his father.

"You don't have to do this," he told his son.

"Yes, I do," Derek replied.

"Well then, we're going to finish this together."

Together father and son continued.

Shortly before the finish line, Derek's father let him go to complete his race.

Receiving a standing ovation from a crowd of over 65,000!

When you don't give up, you cannot fail!

Derek Redmond: Wikipedia

Derek Anthony Redmond (born September 3,  1965) is a retired British sprinter. During his career, he held the British record for the 400 meters sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 meters relay at the World and European Championships.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Redmond tore his hamstring in the 400 meters semi-final but continued the race limping and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Although Redmond was disqualified and listed as "Did Not Finish" due to the outside assistance finishing the race, the incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's "Celebrate Humanity" videos and been used in advertisements by Visa as an illustration of the Olympic spirit and featured in Nike's "Courage" commercials in 2008.

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."

Keep on keeping on!  What a great story, one of which I have never heard about. I am happy you shared.  It clearly shows what this man is made off as well as his determination to not give up.

Thank you, Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker; I understand his disappointment and determination. He reminds me of my Boston marathon in 1985, as it took us two years of hard training to build up strength for the race. I can't imagine how brutal his training might be to train for the Olympics. His story is close to home for me as I didn't think I could keep going during the last 2 miles of the marathon. I didn't win any medals, but I felt good about finishing the race!

Wow, what a story. I too had not heard that one before. I'm very impressed by Derek and I'm equally impressed by a certain someone who finished the Boston Marathon in 1985!

The only thing I remember the last 2 miles was how my legs felt like rubber, and I had no memories of how I walked with the crowd to the starting line. I looked back a few years later and realized what I had done (I was young and foolish, now I'm just foolish! 🙃). Did you know that since Lisa Rainsberger, the American woman who won the women's marathon that year, there has been no American woman winner since 1985? Thank you, Craig Daniels for being here.

Hello Aura - you continue to keep feeding us food for thought, why do I feel like a Dickens character asking for "more"?  And then you serve us with reply to a comment by Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker about your own Boston Marathon example.    Do I like this second helping?  I am impressed.  Again.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Aura! I've seen this many times before and each time, I watch it in its entirety. What a wonderful story of courage, determination and LOVE! There are so many things that I have loved about this story - two big ones simply make my heart melt...

With a torn hamstring, he was insistent upon finishing the race. He could have so very easily, been removed from the track and taken this as a loss with the perfect excuse of a very painful injury - but, he didn't.

Secondly, his Dad got him to the finish line - and knew how important it was for him to complete the race on his own. Much like parents raising their children to be independent adults, his Dad got him where he needed to be to be able to fly on his own on the track. SO very touching.

Lastly, I don't know about you but, I have NO idea who actually won the gold in that race. Derek Redmond won our hearts that year...and made history. Character won over gold in my opinion!

And a big congratulations to you finishing the Boston Marathon! I had two friends who ran this last one that really struggled to get to the end. There must be something extremely challenging with that particular marathon - I hear more runners complain about that race than any of the others.

Hi, Debe Maxwell, CRS; I think both gold and silver medals for the 400 meters in 1992 were won by Quincy Watts (1st) and Steve Lewis (2nd). Both were Americans. People remembered Derek Redmond's story, and not many remember the gold winner!

I was encouraged to train and run the Boston Marathon by one of my classmates from Japan, Yuriko. I met her in the school I was attending in Boston. She would come to the U.S. only to run the marathon every year since 1982 (before and after we had met). I heard she didn't stop until after the bombing in 2013.

If you were referring to the race in 1985, the biggest complaints were (1) lack of prize money, and (2) the race was one month before the U.S. Olympic marathon trials. There were approx. 5,900 runners (one thousand less than the previous year). However, only 3,931 runners finished the race. It was an exhilarating and exhausting experience I will remember for the rest of my life.

Thank you so much for sharing.
