The Chesapeake Bay Bridge

Bringing the Western & Eastern Shores Together

When it's summertime in my neck of the woods this usually means a jaunt across the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge to the Ocean..

Chesapeake bay bridge

Back before the bridge was built in 1952 a ferry was the only way to the Eastern Shore side of the Chesapeake Bay. With the bay stretching for 4+/- miles from shore to shore not many ventured in that direction and instead the beaches on the western side became the playgrounds of DC and Baltimore. Summer homes were a norm right here around Annapolis as people came to relax and play. That all changed when the first Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built. Suddenly getting to the ocean was a lot easier to do and people started heading that way in droves to experience the ocean.

Along the way, the sleepy Eastern Shore side of the bridge started to grow as more and more families moved across the bridge. The lifestyle was slower and less hectic from city life and home prices were more reasonable. Before long the bridge was packed with daily commuters and sun travelers and a second bridge was built to accomodate the growing usage.

Those of us who travel the bridge often know a few tricks to help make the trip, especially during the height of the travel season, easier. Nothing is perfect but these tips certainly help.

1- EZ Pass. This little gem is a prepaid card that sits on your windshield and allows you to zip thru the lanes that do not accept cash. A wonderful time saver.

2- 1-877-229-7726. Call ahead and see what the traffic is like getting to and on the bridge. The report is updated every minute and has been a stress reducer for me many times. If there is a problem I just call where I am heaing and let them know I may be a few minutes late.

3- Bay Bridge website. This website has live reports and video cams of the bridge and the traffic to it which once again is a great way to be able to stay ahead of the curve.

Even with all its traffic you can't help but not love the Bay Bridge. It is one of the most beautiful structures to see and the view when crossing is just awesome. On a clear night you can see the lights of Baltimore. On most any day you can see the ships lined up waiting their turn to enter Baltimore Harbor or tugboats pushing and pulling the ships to and fro. Did I mention a cruise ship or two? Oh and lets not forget the sailboats, fishing/crabbing boats, and pleasure boats gliding across the sun sparkled water. You can not help but notice the vast beauty of the Chesapeake Bay when crossing.

I marvel the beauty of not only the bridge but the water it crosses each time I go over. The beauty never gets old to me

Martha, I haven't spent nearly enough time in Annapolis.  Last May, I did have the opportunity to go sailing for a day in the Bay and around the bridge when one of my buddies took 8 of us sailing for his bachelor's party.  We capped things off with beers and hot crabs!
