HOW IMPORTANT ARE CLEAN WINDOWS?

(Image is from a purchase I made at an art show years ago)

"The eyes are the windows to your soul." - William Shakespeare

As I was looking out my office window, doing some soul searching, listening to the birds, seeing what's going on outside, it suddenly occurred to me, putting myself in the Buyer's shoes are words I live by! My windows sparked an idea. How important are clean windows? My window glass was clear enough from the inside; but then I searched my soul further and how it relates to buyers. What do others see that I don't see from the inside or as a potential Buyer? I would love to hear from you about how important are clean windows. In this profession, I continuously learn more each time I put myself in a potential buyer's shoes. Thoughts that came to mind are as follows:

  • Dirty windows are like constantly living with smudges on eye glasses

  • Buyers are Window Shoppers

  • People may judge and make false assumptions

  • Clean windows improves curb appeal

  • Cleanliness always shows better than neglect

  • A spot on a window isn't just a spot if it stands out like a sore thumb

  • Foggy windows obscures your vision

  • Professional Window Cleaning isn't just for Commercial Buildings

  • Fully functioning windows pays off when selling

  • Broken glass is a hazard

  • Dirty window screens traps insects and debris

  • Acid rain causes dirt to build up that's hard to remove

  • Window streaks are like chemtrails that linger

  • Clean windows are windows of opportunity

  • Unclean windows leaves streaks on glass

  • Bad weather and dirty windows distorts your vision

  • Our vision is clearer when we can see clearly

For the do-it-yourselfer, here are some tips from Bob Villa on how to clean windows. From personal experience, I say when it comes doing it yourself, just like selling your home, think smart! Be safe! Selling your home by owner is a lot like falling off a ladder. It can be an accident that can be regretted a little too late. Hire a professional and make sure you have insurance coverage and let your windows shine! Your vision really does become clearer when you can see things clearly ---Patricia Feager

Sharon Tara - Real Estate Agents like myself do point out window cleaning during the listing presentation. What the seller decides and how they decide to do it is up to them. Many already have someone in mind; others do it by themselves. I don't know how far agents go to justify getting windows cleaned by a professional. By doing this exercise myself without ever being told, I began to probe deeper into the recesses of my mind by putting myself in the buyer's shoes and it made all the difference; hence the composition for this post along with experience. Do you think you'll ever get back into staging?

I'm very happy retired.

I would be happy to help out a friend for fun, but don't plan on returning to the business.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - There was a time I wouldn't hesitate to get up on a ladder both inside and outside but now I think differently. It took an incident of my ladder slipping in the dirt outside that caused me to fall hanging midway down folded across my neighbors fence that was my wake-up call. Painful lessons are not easy to forget. You're right about the sun shining, you can see everything!

Hannah Williams - I also give a list to sellers but because most of it is self-explanatory, I don't discuss at length the reasons why. My self-reflection on window cleaning brought things clearer into light.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - "Aesthetics matter! That sums it up well! Thank  you.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker - "Dog smudges," cat smudges, and little fingerprints too! It's little things like that people notice when buying a home. I find that most buyers who already have pets and/or children don't seem to mind. Others do and reflects on their decision.

George Souto - we all have our little quirks and things we will not tolerate when it comes to window cleaning and other maintenance and/or improvements. I had a friend much older than me from Maine who also lived six months in FL during the winter. She also had multiple homes she rented and kept a tight schedule of age of her major components in each home and things that required regular maintenance. She would tell me, or write letters months in advance telling me she checked things off her list. Whenever we talked by phone or in person, I could also sense her sigh of relief. She took those chores, responsibilities, and her schedules very seriously like a teacher who makes regular assignments to their students. I only saw four of her homes and not the others but I'll  tell you, each one was move-in ready and smelling clean all over, inside and out!

Ed Silva - Bright light shows it all, clean and/or dirty. Sparkly clean glass makes a significant difference!

Endre Barath, Jr. - Diane is an incredible woman who is clearly observant and knows exactly when things need to be done. I like how you complement each other.

Hello Patricia - windows are important.   They create first impressions.  Whether on a storefront where what is being displayed is on view or of the perception of that business itself.  The same is true for a private residence or the common areas of a condo building.  Windows "speak" volumes.  Their cleanliness as well as their number and function.

Windows are often a pain to keep clean but having clean windows while selling a home will definitely improve how it shows.

Yes, windows have got to be clean! How else can you clearly see what is going on outside?

We have some windows that are too high to clean ourselves, so once a year I've been calling a professional window company to come do it. It's worth the money. I want to do it twice a year but the winter started before I was ready to make that call. Whoops.

Michael Jacobs - When you're living inside and window treatments are closed, you really do have a blind eye. To prospective buyers, it's completely different! Many get obsessed with open and closing the curtains or blinds and want to see if there's a view. Buyers notice everything most homeowners are oblivious to and they are already the judge and jury before they even get inside. I hope you have an enjoyable Sunday!

Roy Kelley - thanks!!! Buying a home is a journey and buyers notice everything!

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - Buyers sure notice when something is negligent, even if it is trivial. Windows really are a window of opportunity! I like  your comment very much. Thank you.

Kat Palmiotti - It really is worth the money to have a professional window cleaner do the job. They have the right products to get the job done better and it's not so easy as it looks.  But to look from the inside and look from the outside the difference is noticeable! Have a nice day!

Brian England - as they say, no pain, no gain! Surprisingly, real buyers are already looking long before they find a real estate agent. If they have targeted a specific location, neighborhood, or community, they already know who maintains and who does not!

I had vowed to wash my windows this weekend.  It isn't getting done.  I felt a little guilty until I saw your photo, Patricia.  My windows aren't quite that bad, but they wouldn't make for as great a picture!🙃

Myrl Jeffcoat - Thanks for the FEATURE in the PHOTOS group! Always a good place to land. Thank you. As for the photo, the painting drew me in and I was mesmerized by what attracts an artist to paint. An artist doesn't judge, he (in this case) just painted what he saw! Buyers, on the other hand are always judging. Isn't that interesting? There must be a reason why there are so many references to a starving artist... I hope you have a nice day!!!

Hello Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP, having clean windows is a must, especially if the house is on the market for sale. Vinegar and water mixture is the best cleaning solution(for me).

I love the new window cleaning cloths that need no chemicals.  They make window cleaning so much easier because they reduce the streaking you get with lots of the liquid window cleaners.
