"I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parent's garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years, Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 400 employees." - Steve Jobs
This brings me to self-reflection. Is a garage really just a garage or is it something more or less than a place to park your vehicles? If you're lucky enough to have the space to park your car inside your garage, close the door and come inside your house. You probably don't spend a lot of time inside the garage unless there is a reason.
I have a friend who runs a business out of her garage. Over the years I can tell her business has grown exponentially. Her cars can no longer fit inside the garage. I also know a lot of other people who park their vehicles on the street but I don't know what's inside their garage. Other than when they open up the garage door, and it is obviously stuffed with boxes and furniture, I can see why they park outside.
If you had no other choice but to work inside your garage could you, or would there be no room and adequate circulation, winter, spring, summer or fall? Only you could answer that question. Square footage means nothing if you don't have adequate space for your own personal needs.
If you never had a garage before, you will know quickly just how valuable a house is to have the luxury of parking your vehicles inside a garage. And if you're buying a house, you will discover quickly whether or not you must have a garage. Business and parking under the same garage space can get old and cramped fast, and using your garage for storage isn't something you can really hide, is it?
Thoughts to Ponder...
- If you have a garage does the overhead door function well?
- Do you have enough light inside your garage?
- If you had to work & share your space with a pet, would your pet be happy?
- If your garage door broke and stayed open, would you be embarrassed?
- If you had to get to an electrical panel inside a garage is it blocked?
- How's the temperature inside the garage and will your storage survive?
- How clean is your garage floor?
- How clean are your garage walls?
- Is there a place for everything neatly organized?
- Is your garage secure enough for your car, business, or possessions?
- If someone was hiding behind storage boxes, would you know?
- Does your garage look as beautiful inside as it does outside?
If having a garage is a luxury and could bring twice as much home equity, would reasons for having a garage be different? I hope this post raises awareness and if you're moving to the DFW area, please give me a call ---Patricia Feager
