Recently, Ron has been re-reading Eckhart Tole's book, Stillness Speaks, and he brought up this quote below as an interesting description of the human condition. It also reminded us of Auguste Rodin's statue, Le Penseur or the Thinker!
"The human condition: lost in thought"
~Eckhart Tole
We interpreted it as meaning that we as a human race rarely operate in the present. For the most part we are on automatic going about our day relying on past experiences and memories.
This brought to mind a talk by Deepak Chopra, who stated, that the average person thinks the same 50,000 thoughts every day.
"Observe Your Thoughts, don't believe them."
~Eckhart Tole
We made a point on that day to be in the now from the moment we left our home, to the moment we returned. We found ourselves noticing more than we usually do. As we drove to the harbor, we noticed that the exit on the Freeway heading back South was closed and being worked on.
It is something we would have assumed based on past experience, would be open, if we were not in the moment. We found the perfect parking spot, even though we were at the store at the busiest time of the day, and bought the last piece of the swordfish that came in that morning. The manager said, it had our name written on it.
All five of our errands were accomplished smoothly and magically without any glitches. Last Monday, I shared an Alan Watts quote that intrigued our readers. It was the importance of going out of one's mind to come to one's senses. That is exactly what we remind ourselves on a daily basis.
It is taking the time to taste the coffee or tea every morning: to smell the aroma, taste the flavor, and to feel its warmth. And I appreciate that Ron makes it for me every morning.
Once again, these words from Thich Nhat Hanh clarify my wordsL
"We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness that is available. We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living.
We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma, and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on.
But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive. Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment."
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
It takes practice be in the moment. Try it, you may like it!
"There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow. Today is the right day to Love, Believe, Do and mostly Live."
~ Dalai Lama
