Atlanta Buckhead Midtown:
IRS Asks For 2020 Returns To Be Sent Again
In Atlanta Buckhead, Midtown, the Westside and every other part of the USA, a letter from the IRS attracts attention.
In January, people began receiving letters asking them to send their FULL DOCUMENTATION FOR THEIR 2020 INCOME TAX FORM 1040 again.
WHY???
Well, it seems that the IRS has a backlog of unprocessed filings. As of Dec. 4, 2021, the IRS said it has a backlog of 6.7 million unprocessed individual returns and 2.6 million unprocessed amended individual returns. Taxpayers who filed 2020 returns by paper and the regular mail now say the IRS wants them to send copies of their returns, even if the payment check was already cashed a year ago. (1)
Guess someone there had an idea that duplicating the submissions as requested by Notice CP80 would be the way to verify that people didn't just send in money without Form 1040 and all supportive documentation.
The details in Notice CP80 state: "If you have already filed this return: Please send a newly-signed copy to the address shown above. Be sure to attach copies of all schedules and other documents you included with the original return."
At the official IRS website, they stated that Notice CP80 was “Last Reviewed or Updated: 27-Jan-2022”. (2)
"What this notice is about
We credited payments and/or other credits to your tax account for the tax period shown on your notice. However, we haven't received your tax return."
Actually, in these cases, the IRS has records that it cashed the payment BUT CANNOT LOCATE THE RETURN to coordinate the documentation.
"What you need to do
If you are required to file this tax return:
- Please file today. Send your signed tax return to the address shown on the top of your notice.
- Due to processing delays for 2019 and 2020 tax returns, the issuance of CP80 and CP080 (Unfiled Tax Return – Credit on Account) notices …"
"What if I have already filed this return?
Please send a newly signed copy to the address shown on ... your notice."
So grateful for accountants who can work through all of these complications for us if need be.
