"Pretend that every single person you meet

has a sign around his or her neck, that

says, 'Make me feel important.'

Not only will you succeed in sales,

you will succeed in life."

Mary Kay Ash (1918-2001,

Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics

This is the ad that sponsored the Czechoslovak Recipe Book for Canada's Centennial Year, for the Women's Council of the Czechoslovak National Association. With the proceeds from the recipe book, they were able to help many refugees in Camps in Italy and Germany, as well as newcomers to Canada who were in need.

My recipe book came to me from my Aunt. The date stamped is 1867 (Canada) - 1967 (Confederation). A few of the Recipes included:

  • Beef Soup With Liver Dumplings
  • Beef Esterhazy
  • Variety of Hungarian Goulash
  • Beef Rolled in Wine
  • Spanish Birds (Meat Rolls)
  • Beef Tongue with Piquant Sauce
  • Pork Chops in Mustard Sauce
  • Segedinsky Goulash
  • Deviled Pork Chops
  • Stewing Veal with Cauliflower
  • Lamb with Marjoram
  • Head Cheese (lots of tongue, heart, and hocks)
  • Dill Sauce
  • Cauliflower Pudding
  • Letcher
  • Noky

Although, I won't be making any of the recipes, it was interesting to see how much lard, giblets, livers, bouillon, paprika, and caraway seeds were required for meals in those days. Lots of pounding of meat, long preparations, and a good amount of time was required once upon a time to make a successful meal.

Every new endeavor that leads to success helps people to live better, so the new electric range ad read, 'Live better electrically.' The ad words were very seductive to get women out of the kitchen and into the beauty shop. Mary Kay Ash was also very successful by making women look and feel beautiful with cosmetics. In business, all a sales lady or man had to do was imagine a sign around a person's neck, saying "Make Me Feel Important." And just think, a new electric range could change how women felt about themselves too! With extra time, thanks to the electric range, they had more time to pamper themselves all because the electric range was smart enough to cook by itself!

Today, I wonder how many people really do make homemade meals inside the kitchen and how many are watching T.V. Cooking Shows with take-out orders? And now, I have to stop and think, after the lockdowns and quarantines, how many people will stop eating in restaurants and stop wearing and/or buying cosmetics? I do believe innovation is on its way, and more people are staying anchored indoors, cooking up ideas to succeed ---Patricia Feager

We are eating more at home, but only because we ate so much over the holidays.  I wonder if most of the kitchen innovations today are really innovations.  I have a lot of innovations stuck in the back of my cabinets.

Some of those recipes listed above look like they would be fun to make.  My dad and I prepared beef tongue and made sandwiches out of it a few years ago.  We were trying to recreate the dish we had at Lefty O'Doul's in San Francisco.  We came pretty close.

Fantastic post Patricia! My grandparents came from Bohemia, so my mother learned how to make goulash with just a few ingredients. We absolutely loved it, I still do. My husband and I take turns cooking for each other, just last week I made Chicken Piccata, yum!

Patricia loved this post and I see two Hungarian Recipe's and yes the Hungarians loved Lard... I do not cook like that and since Diane can not take spices... I only use sweet or smoked paprika:)Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. - my mother always cooked with lard or Crisco. That's what was common and available then. We ate healthy too! It's fun to look at old recipe books and this one is a treasure!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! - Chicken Piccata sounds delicious! My mother also served Hungarian Goulash from scratch, as were all of her meal preparations.

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - funny you mention you have a lot of so called innovations 'stuck in the back of cabinets.' It seems to be common. I hear that from sellers getting ready to put their house on the market. It's hard to part with those innovations just because they cost so much or were gifts from other people!

Many people are now eating and experimenting more in the kitchen. It's a great idea to save money and eat healthier too! You have great memories of cooking things up with your dad! I love it. It would make a great Father's Day story!

My dad and I have spent so many hours in the kitchen together.  He is an amazing cook.  I follow directions well!

Good morning, Patricia... my first cookbook was The Joy of Cooking (way back in the 1960's). I still have that cookbook and refer to it regularly. And while I cook many things from scratch, I'll be the first to admit a love the "assistance" my crockpot and my air fryer provide me.

PS I never stopped wearing real clothes or cosmetics during the pandemic and I haven't since the pandemic. For me it's a matter of self-respect as to how I present myself and that I don't just let myself "go." So I won't be stopping in the future either.

The Joy of Cooking was one of my first cook books too and still a mainstay in my kitchen, Nina Hollander, Broker. It was also fun to visit Rombauer Winery last year and discover their family connection to The Joy of Cooking.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker and Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - My first recipe book was called "FOODS," published in the '60s. It was very interesting because it had a few Moon recipes, which was very appropriate for that era! I've had lots of Better Home & Garden Cookbooks but never "The Joy of Cooking!" Learning to cook back then, was always an experiment in my kitchen! Oh yes, the crockpot was amazing!!! Mine was orange and I loved the sturdy brown pot inside that kept food the right temperature and I could easily remove it to clean.

Nina, as I read your comment about your appearance (pandemic or not) that good old Aretha Franklin song entered my head,

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Find out what it means to me

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Take care, TCB

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

I never did know what TCB meant, but it was the meaning in the song that made such a strong impact!!!

Good morning Patricia!

I love the Mary Kay quote. Everyone wants to feel important.

As for the cookbook, that sounds interesting! I probably wouldn't make many of those meals except perhaps the lamb, pork chops and dill sauce, but I bet it was an interesting read.

And as for the question about how many people make home cooked meals... I don't know the answer but I know I do! Every night. Last night was black bean burgers. The night before was a pulled-venison-in-the-crockpot, a few nights before that were fig paninis, yesterday I made homemade sourdough bread, and tonight it's something with shrimp. I love to eat food I made myself!

Enjoy your day!

Good morning Patricia. Remember well growing up in a typical Chicago neighborhood. Cans of Crisco in every kitchen. People preferred gas to electric cooking. And yes, we use to go out 3 days or more a week for dinner pre-pandemic. Now, maybe takeout once a month. Enjoy your day.

The thing I dislike most about cooking is the preparation since I am somewhat impatient and I want to just pop something in the oven and have it ready to eat in a half-hour or less, haha.

Patricia, We've taken to eating out lunch on the weekends when I'm not with clients. There aren't as many people in the restaurants during the day as there are in the evenings. Prices have gone up and lunch now costs about the same as dinner used to. We do usually cook though. We did more take out when the kids were in their sports years. We prefer cooking over take out. My husband is often involved these days. He grills and I make the sides. Sometimes he does it all.

As for makeup. I do skip a few days if I'm not going out and not going to be on a zoom call. No worries for the makeup companies though, I'm doing my part to keep them in business.

I always find a smile on my face when reading ads and marketing published several decades ago.  I must admit I had never heard of Segedinsky Goulash, so I needed to Google up a recipe.  It sounds good!

Kat Palmiotti - Dill Sauce: 1-1 quarter cup of milk, 1/2 pint sour cream, 2 tbsp. flour, salt to taste, 2 tbsp vinegar, 2 tsps sugar, 1 egg yolk, 1-2 tsp finely chopped dill. Mix well sour cream, flour and salt. In a saucepan bring milk to a slow boil, gradually add sour cream, reduce heat and let sauce thicken, stirring constantly. Season to taste with warm vinegar, salt and sugar, sprinkle with dill. Just before servicing, stir in egg yok for finer texture. I'll make copies of the recipes and send them to you by mail. I love how creative you are in the kitchen and it's healthy too!!!

Wayne Martin - Nothing made fried chicken better than using Crisco!!! For many years, I kept it on my shelf. My mother's home made French Fries boiled in lard was much tastier than what the Fast Food Chains had to offer. I was raised on Gas Kitchen Stoves. When I moved to TX, I had a hard time adjusting to electric. I still prefer gas stoves. My induction electric stove made all the difference and that's when electric cooking got better. I never was a Fast Food fan until I became a Realtor on the run and business was full throttle in different parts of the Dallas Metroplex. Today, I'd rather starve and wait until I get home.

Brian England - you crack me up! It must be a generational thing. Ha-Ha!

Carla Freund - a mom's gotta do, what a mom's gotta do to keep her family happy with those busy schedules. Adjustments to schedules is something we learned to do quickly! After the lock-downs were over in my area of Texas, I was afraid to use the make-up I had because I barely used it, except for Zoom. I figured my make-up expired. A virus like that makes you think a lot about germs, hygiene, and contamination! I got a chuckle out of your comment of supporting the cosmetic industry - may they NEVER go out of business!

Michael Jacobs - Since the onset of the pandemic, that's all I've been doing in my spare time, reading, researching, and when it comes to politics and technology - follow the money!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - you always look great in your pictures in profile. I really do believe Mary Kay was very wise and had a vision that came to a successful fruition. She was way ahead of her time. I pass by her two big Corporations frequently. She made a big name for herself. Frequently, I passed women driving the Mary Kay pink automobile but I haven't seen any lately. It was surprising to me to discover she got her idea for lotions from the family of a tanner! I guess the mother of cosmetic inventions was Mary Kay Ash!

Hello, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP. I missed the old days when we got together for a "potluck" on TGIF at work, and I would bring some "special" Thai dishes using my Grandma's secret recipes. It gave me the "bragging rights" without revealing the secret ingredients! Cooking is in my DNA. So, if we ever find a way to get together with AR members, count me in! 😃
