"Pretend that every single person you meet
has a sign around his or her neck, that
says, 'Make me feel important.'
Not only will you succeed in sales,
you will succeed in life."
Mary Kay Ash (1918-2001,
Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics
This is the ad that sponsored the Czechoslovak Recipe Book for Canada's Centennial Year, for the Women's Council of the Czechoslovak National Association. With the proceeds from the recipe book, they were able to help many refugees in Camps in Italy and Germany, as well as newcomers to Canada who were in need.
My recipe book came to me from my Aunt. The date stamped is 1867 (Canada) - 1967 (Confederation). A few of the Recipes included:
- Beef Soup With Liver Dumplings
- Beef Esterhazy
- Variety of Hungarian Goulash
- Beef Rolled in Wine
- Spanish Birds (Meat Rolls)
- Beef Tongue with Piquant Sauce
- Pork Chops in Mustard Sauce
- Segedinsky Goulash
- Deviled Pork Chops
- Stewing Veal with Cauliflower
- Lamb with Marjoram
- Head Cheese (lots of tongue, heart, and hocks)
- Dill Sauce
- Cauliflower Pudding
- Letcher
- Noky
Although, I won't be making any of the recipes, it was interesting to see how much lard, giblets, livers, bouillon, paprika, and caraway seeds were required for meals in those days. Lots of pounding of meat, long preparations, and a good amount of time was required once upon a time to make a successful meal.
Every new endeavor that leads to success helps people to live better, so the new electric range ad read, 'Live better electrically.' The ad words were very seductive to get women out of the kitchen and into the beauty shop. Mary Kay Ash was also very successful by making women look and feel beautiful with cosmetics. In business, all a sales lady or man had to do was imagine a sign around a person's neck, saying "Make Me Feel Important." And just think, a new electric range could change how women felt about themselves too! With extra time, thanks to the electric range, they had more time to pamper themselves all because the electric range was smart enough to cook by itself!
Today, I wonder how many people really do make homemade meals inside the kitchen and how many are watching T.V. Cooking Shows with take-out orders? And now, I have to stop and think, after the lockdowns and quarantines, how many people will stop eating in restaurants and stop wearing and/or buying cosmetics? I do believe innovation is on its way, and more people are staying anchored indoors, cooking up ideas to succeed ---Patricia Feager
