It's only been 4 days since the announcement of the "Outside Blog Launch" and we already have close to 1500 AR Blogs setup using the subdomain option.  We are starting to see many personalized Blogs evolve using custom domain names too.  Here's some samples of the near 250 that I know are "Live" now.

It's only been a few days, but IMHO, it appears the launch was a success.  We had a couple minor issues and glitches, but those can always be expected, especially when considering the level of participation we were counting on from our community.  Thanks goes out to ALL of you!!  In the first 24 hours, the launch post had over 140 comments and nearly 4000 views.  Tonight it has nearly 6500 views with 350 comments.  There have also been numerous other posts written both on and off ActiveRain.  WOW!  There is definately an Outside BlogBuzz!!

On Friday, I had the priviledge of doing a phone interview with Matt Carter from Inman News, it was very exciting.  We are the pioneers of this industry and we are taking Social Networking to the next level. I hope it'll make the news on Monday.  The biggest bug issue seemed to be duplicate content which was nicely explained, and I hope it is now a better understood topic.  Thanks Bob, for that post.

Here are some of the Outside Blogs that have come out since the launch: They are personal domains by other AR members.  You can click on the thumbnail image if you'd like to go see their Blogs live.

There are too many great ActiveRain subdomain Blogs for me to list, I thought I'd start with these.

I know there are many others that are waiting for the nameservers to recognize their domain names, if I missed yours, I apologize, please feel free to add a link in the comments if you have created an AR Blog using your own domain name.  This is an exciting time for the ActiveRain Community, and to think we've only just begun.

Thanks for all your support and patience in helping us get this rolled out, the best is truly yet to come.

I completely missed on all that. I guess I need to find the blogs abut the launch and what I need to do.

Actually I need to read why you, guys, came up with this idea and what is the benefit of doing it.

Just can't figure where all these wonderful people on AR get time to do that. Time to retire, I guess...

Lisa - there's a lot to learn about this SEO stuff, I have been reading from the Google Webmaster Blog all weekend. There are some great posts there and one could learn a lot from spending a couple hours there.  I feel confident in saying the SEO on outside Blogs will be very good awesome.

Brad~ Thanks for all of the info on outside blogs.  When I have time I am going to do one outside of activerain too!  How have you been by the way?

11:46pm • #6

BethAnn - once you create a subdomain blog, it's instant.  If you are creating an outside Blog like the ones mentioned in this post, it could take a couple days for the nameservers to recognize the new domain.  Regarding your header, the upload issue with IE has been corrected, make sure the header is the right dimensions or you may have difficulty uploading it.  742x105.  :-)

Gary - I will most certainly go check it out.  Thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing those Grandkids too.

I am buying a few domain names tomorrow, setting up the nameservers, and then writing a post on how to do it with the top 3: GoDaddy, NetSol, and Dotster.  The hardest and longest part is just coming up with a good domain name and finding out if it's available.  lol~

Hi Brad.....First Thanks to You Guys, I set mine up Friday, it took a while for the web address server Go Daddy to connect.

Good News I'm up and running now at realestatevictoriabcblog. I'm excited about this I feel confident it'll be a huge success for our real estate business for all that get involved.

I do need to revisit my Banner Graphic, that'll have to wait, I'll get to it hopefully this week,

Once again thanks to you all , have an awesome week!

It's great to see the very positive response to the announcement, Brad. I will be there too, just gotta find the time. Hope to see some answers to the many questions that have been asked.  It will be interesting to see where people are posting first - to their outside blog or to AR.

Brad - I am very excited - I got a little carried away at GO Daddy and bought 5 - I can't resist a sale.  But have been waiting for the glitches to be worked out.

I am a human glitch, so I thought I better hold back till the pros got going.

I actually have an idea for a build a home blog and have 2 builders lined up.  Can I have that hosted on AR as another outside blog, or is one the limit?

Hey Brad,

Thanks for including us in your list of new blogs! What a treat to see this before my second cup of coffee.  I have two questions which I'm not finding answers for, though. If you have a link or can direct me to the answers, I'd appreciate it.

1. I'm really having issues with photos and wrapping text. I know how to do it, but how it appears on my screen in the composition stage and how it appears on the blog is different. PLus...what it looks like on my AR blog is entirely different than my outisde blog.

2. The other question is how to embed something in my email signature so people can click on it and go to my outside blog. Right now I just have it as a link, but I saw an email signature recently that has the little RSS logo etc.

Thanks again..and I hope you're getting some sleep these days! : )

It is very helpful to see what the pros can do to customize the outside blog. I had a bunch of questions, mostly related to duplicate content initially. And will look at the post referenced in this blog.

The AR outside blog just gives the public better access to your public posts. Otherwise it was difficult to comment and to subscribe. It gives the public access to you more directly without the rest of the AR community coming along.

It is a great idea. I do not have another effective outside blog, but it does not seem to me to replace another blog, but to enhance the AR posts to the public.

It is a little surprising that only 1500 AR members have created their outside blog.

Folks, I think it is being posted whether you have customized it or not. Be careful to uncheck the default "post to outside blog" if you have not customized it yet. Maybe Brad can comment on that.

Setting it up is so simple, and it has a clean professional look. Even without having the special touch that the excellent examples above give us.

I cannot wait for the new Localism.

Hey, Brad. Love the outside blog! I want to use a domain I've had for a while but no time to build a Web site for it. An outside blog would be perfect.

Question: I already have a hosting account for it with my email set up there. If I point that domain to the ActiveRain nameservers (ns1.agentspaces.com and ns2.agentspaces.com), will this interfere with the hosting account where my email is set up? (Obviously, I don't understand name servers very well ... I just do what I am told.)

Also, on the outside blog, will we be able to create other static pages besides the "About" page?

Thanks for all you do.

I set mine up this afternoon ... very easy to do! Now I'll do the DNS thing.

One thing I did notice is the width of the outside blog is less than the AR blog so it affects some table padding. I'm having to edit each blog that uses a table in order to reduce the width of the table. I've edited quite a few of the old posts, but those changes have yet to be reflected in the 'outside' blog posts. Why is there a delay? I would think that any change to the AR post would be made to the outside blog immediately ... or is that not the case?

Virginia - one blog is the limit per AR user. That's really four though. I understand what you're asking, I just don't see how you would do that under one profile. :-)

1:25am • #78

AJ - Just do it! Trust me!!  :-)

Michael - yes, you better get one and jump on board, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Miriam - they will be like any outside Blog.  You will find them based on searches, links to, content etc.  Unless someone does a post like this with links to them all, it will be hard to know and see all the outside blogs created here. We already have close to 300 outside blogs and over 2500 subdomain blogs.  It's only been the first week. WOW!!

Matt - don't stress out too much, just get er done!  :-)

Michelle - yours looks great, now pack it with AWESOME content, the rest will come.

Diane - lock that door, get a cup of jo, and you'll have it done in a matter of minutes.  It only takes 10-15 minutes to setup, it could take you days to come up with a domain name that's not taken already though.

Maureen - the url link to your photo should take viewers to the "Abut Maureen" page. Let me know if it's not.

Missy - the DNS issue was corrected. It only takes a couple hours now. My REnetBlog.com went up in 45 minutes.  The graphic issue has been resolved but I am hearing of a couple members still having some issues. We are researching each on a case by case as reported.  Sometimes clearing the cache in the browser, or restarting the computer has resolved that issue.

Carol - great questions.

1. The images on your AR blog are being reduced to fit the width dimensions of your outside Blog. Ib the future, we may have some templates that are wider that will correct that.  The templates available now were put up so we could launch. There is way more to come, we have to get through this launch first, then comes the tropical downpour!!  :-)

2. Just use the outside Blog URL when creating the link in your signature.  Not sure I would use an RSS logo to do that, typically when someone clicks on the RSS logo, they are trying to obtain an RSS Feed to your Blog or site.

Brad said " the url link to your photo should take viewers to the "Abut Maureen" page. Let me know if it's not."

It is...

I did not realize that... using a photo of me makes even more sense. I think.

I have a photo of Columbus that is too wide on my profile page... I moved it down...  I suppose I should make it narrower so it fits on both the profile and my blog...

11:09am • #81

Richard - your comment should be a post on your Blog!  Loved It!!  Great stuff my friend, thanks!  :-)

Anne - keep your wordpress Blog.  Unless you want to have it DNS to your AR Blog, we are not quite ready to do that yet, but it's coming. It all depends on your plan and how you want to use each of your sites. If you want, give me a call, we can brainstorm.

Maureen - Me too.  I do have a google and wordpress blog in fact a few, but this will be great for those who have not started a successful outside Blog.  No new platform to learn, Kick Butt SEO, easy one click syndication, and we will soon have something the others don't... very soon.  That announcement will probably be made after the NEW LOCALISM launch. Great stuff, I promise.  :-)

Bonner - just keep pushing and pressing on my friend!

Bill - thanks! We just provided the platform, these members are doing an incredible job with their own designs, logos, headers, and the content is getting better all the time.

Dawn - views and clicks, are you referring to your AR Blog or your Outside Blog with your own domain name? Eiter way, I think it couldaffect both and in a very positive way.  If people find your outside Blog first and it is the main source and getting the SEO, then the affect would be there just as it is now with you AR Blog.  The subdomain Blogs probably will get very little if any SEO, so it really depends which Blog Google sees as the source. It's nice for you to be able to control that. :-)

Don - Congrats!!  That time has been shortened since they found the bug causing it over the past weekend. Now it only takes a few hours, 24 tops. Great to see your Blog up and running.  Hopefully it will help keep you up and running too!  :-)

11:28am • #85

I'm still trying to come up with a catchy blog name and domain name. I haven't had much time to think about it the last few days but I will be doing mine too.

Kathy - this is honestly the most challenging and time consuming part of the whole process.  Coming up with a great domain name (that isn't taken already) is very tough. But once you do, watch out world!!  :-)

11:30am • #86

Lizette - Kentuckyology Looks great!!  Congrats, I love the banner/header.  Glad it's up and running for you now. Sorry it took us a bit to get the delay issue corrected, but we're full steam ahead now.  Have fun! :-)

11:32am • #87

Lane - the question is always going to be, "which blog gets you the most traffic, and business?" You're doing it right, there is only one way to tell.  :-)

11:34am • #88

Jeremy - I read and featured your post about the Links and SEO you're getting already. That is incredible.  We knew these outside blogs would do that, but we had no Idea it would be that quick.  Thanks for posting that for other members to see.  :-)

11:36am • #89

Jeannette - you look great in Pink and so does your Blog!  :-)

Kay - Here is what I found regarding the email hosting: Thanks Chuck William for finding this out:

As far as creating static pages or additional tabs like the "About Me", I'm not sure where the R&D (research and development) team is with that.  I like the idea, but we need to walk before we run.  :-)

11:55am • #91

Jo - check now, it should be working.
If not, follow these instructions and it will resolve your issue of waiting on the nameserver:

Fred - Your Blog looks great. The meta tags and description are unique to you, your area, and your perspective audience.  I can only suggest that you maximize those areas by understanding how they work. I did a link on the Launch post that explains them in a little more detail.  You can also use google and search Meta tags to get a ton of valuable information about them. Great job, now the content will be your success driver.

Andrew
- they are working on the RSS feed graphic and getting that corrected. Sorry for the delay on that one, it's taking a bit more research and effort to get that one resolved. Thanks for being patient, we will get it fixed here shortly. :-)

12:07pm • #94

Jo - we have already corrected many issues that were addressed in that post, thanks for pointing that out.  Jeremy Blanton helped me out and did a step by step post on how to setup an outside Blog using your own domain name. The waiting period was the biggest concern and that has all been resolved now. Thanks.  :-)

Elizabeth - B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!  Glad these members examples helped you out.  This post is doing it's job!!

12:19pm • #96

Brad.....thanks for the tips. Mine could use a little tweeking. http://winterpam.activerain.com/. The questions is how does someone find this blog?

Pam - the answer is the same way they find ANY blog or post you've written.  SEO, keyword searches, advertising, links, syndication, links within the post etc.  There are many ways to promote your Outside Blog, just the same as you have done with your AR internal Blog.  How do people find you now?  Is it AR members, consumers, news media, etc?  It all works the same with your outside blog too.  :-)

12:23pm • #97

Brad, I am so excited about this whole thing. Question: can we set up Widgets on our outside AR blogs?

Mana - we are looking into the widget, gadgets and whatyamacallits! lol~  I'm sure we will be offering some type of capability to do this along with templates, CSS custimization, tracking etc.  Right now we are just rolling this out to members as a Brand New Option and we want to work out all the kinks before we jump ahead to the next level.  Be patient, there is more coming, just wait till you see the new localism.com. OMG!!!

12:39pm • #100

Petra - the width of the outside blog does not match like your AR blog or customized blog.  In some cases, that's why the photo's were reduced in size.  Hopefully a wider template will solve that issue.  I know they are looking at this, and trying to remedy it asap.

4:15pm • #102

Elaine - the delay has been fixed, it should reflect your changes now instantly, or at least almost instantly! lol~  :-)

4:17pm • #103

Teri - loved the video of you and your sister! Can't wait to see what else you produce and post.  :-)

4:19pm • #104

Judy - I'm sure there will be a way to allow viewers to subscribe to your outside blog. Maybe a button or a widget, we'll get something put together for widgets, gadgets, templates and all that good stuff.  :-)

Header is 742x105 and the photo is 189 pixels or higher.  :-)

Team Newington - glad you enjoyed, looking forward to seeing yours too, especially the results you get from it.  Don't forget to do those types of posts too.  We love success stories.  :-)  I just saw a comment on one of my other posts (The AR Blog Launch Post) where a member just got their first call from their AR Outside Blog.    YEAH...  It's awesome!!

Brad,  Thank you for all the tips you have provided above.  The blogs you featured are great examples to inspire the rest of us to get ours up and running.  I'm sure I'll have some questions for you.  Looking forward to hearing about the "new new thing" you are working on!

Pat - feel free to contact me anytime.  We now have over 3000 member subdomains and close to 300 personalized domains created using AR's Outside Blogs.  It's only been a week. It will just keep getting better and better here, you can contact me anytime you need help!  :-)

11:36am • #112

I really like subdomain feature.  Instead of just telling people to look for me on Activerain, I can give them my username and they can just append it to activerain.com.  I love it.

Jon - excellent point about the subdomain name.  I think you will find more SEO value in having your own domain name and letting AR point your Blog to that domain.

If you use Jon.Activerain.com, it's great as you've pointed out, but your Activerain.com/Jon Blog still gets all the SEO juice.

If you use something like JonSellsRealEstate.com, then the AR Blog will be pushed to that domain, and it will get the SEO and Google juice.

Just a suggestion, you might consider getting a domain name you really like (if it's available) and maximize the potential of these new outside Blogs.  :-)

Suggestion for localism: move the office phone number up underneath the office name... small font.  Add cell phone number where the office number is now.

Something similar for outside blog.

: )     pretty please and thank you.

Georgina - love your idea, can you post that on Jon's Q&A post? That way we keep all the questions and ideas in one location. Thanks :-)

Amber - (and Jason) I checked out your outside Blog and it looks fantastic. I like your posts too.  You've combined photos, links, and the formating and visual overall is sweet. Nice Job.  Glad you got it working so quickly and efficiently. :-)

Rich - I don't think I'll be able to join you for your event. but I know you'll do great. Go REPRESENT my friend.  You know you can always use my AR outside Blog, or any of the others you choose.  I think you may be able to get a list from Bob of all the AR Outside Blogs, but that may only be the sub-domain Blogs.  My RENetBlog.com is getting some really good Google juice right now, and seems to be showing up more and more as time goes on.  See/Hear you on the show today at 11:00.
