What are the Meanings of the Different Basements?

Q & A - What are the meanings of the different basements?

22231 E. Idyllwilde Drive., Parker, CO 80138In Denver, the majority of the homes you will find do have basements, but there are a few that do not have basements.      Many buyers have "finished basement" on their Wish List.     You can find  -

Walk-out basements - the basement has a door to the backyard

Garden basements - The windows are at ground level

In-ground (cellar) basements - full basement below ground

You can find homes with basements that have not been finished, so you can be creative and finish them the way you would like, or you can find basements fully finished.     There is usually a room or space for storage even when the basement is fully finished.    You can find wet bars, exercise rooms, media rooms, wine cellars, 2nd kitchens, and rooms for pool tables.     Need a mancave for the "boys" to watch their games?

Game roomPool tables

When you put bedrooms in the basement, to be conforming, they need an egress window (escape window) and a closet.     Always nice to have at least a 3/4 bath in the basement.   However, a basement that is finished, adds added valuable living space to a home.

Give me a call when you are ready to view homes with finished basements.

Basements look good. We do not have any basements in this area where I live. Visit my last blog...

Like your area, we have a lot of homes with basements and families are looking for them to be finished so they can have the added space

Hi Joan - when we had a townhouse we had a walk out basement that we finished.  When we moved to a much larger house the basement was not needed and it was not a walk out..

I would love to have a man cave in the basement, but if we ever do get a finished basement, I know it will be my wife's craft room/sewing room.  She might let me have a man cave shed.  😃

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty I have a media room with a giant TV & surround sound, plus a sewing room.   There is also a spare bedroom and full bath in my basement.    It is nice to have added space.

That sounds like a wonderful set up.  We have few basements in our area.  We have to move to the downtown areas to find them and they are almost all really old homes.

Thank you for pointing out the differences in basements. I see a lot more dungeons rather than living spaces in my practice Joan 😄

Hi Joan- I'd never had a basement until we moved to Northern VA. Larry insisted on a walk-out basement and we loved it.

In NYC a basement is at least 50% above grade (sidewalk level). Townhouses/Brownstones have the garden level in the basement. As long as the basement meets certain requirements- i.e. at least 7 ft ceilings, appropriate egress- then it can be livable space. Cellars are at least 50% below grade and is only considered accessory space - meaning you can't have a full bathroom or bedroom in these spaces.

Joan:

Basements were a big deal back in Boston but I'm not sure I have seen more than 2 or 3 in all the houses I have seen here in SoCal.

Nice explanation for those who need to know!

Jeff

Jeff, that would make sense being close to the water, but so was Boston.
