The other day I was driving to San Diego with my grandkids.  I wanted to take a few pictures for my blog, and especially I wanted one of the Camp Pendelton sign.  Well, for some reason I kept going down different streets, and had no idea at all where we were.   The kids were sure we were lost.

I didn't act lost though, and we played "Real Estate".  When we turned down a dead-end street, it became a lesson in vocabulary.  "What do you call this circle street?"  Yep a cul-de-sac.  What's the name of those white wooden window coverings..."Plantation Shutters."  And we would drive back the way we came.

One of them finally asked me, "Granma if you don't know where you are how will you know how to get back?" Oh, that's easy I said....just wet your finger and put it out the window.....we came with the wind, so we just have to follow it.

But Granma ~ we don't have windows back here....(they were in the back of a SUV)....so after a good laugh we just kept driving, pointing out houses we liked, and not caring very much that we didn't know which way to go.  After all we had the whole day to just drive around looking at Real Estate and taking blog pictures> :) :)

Real Estate can be a fun activity with the kids, even if you are working that day get them involved by:

  • helping pass out fliers
  • vocabulary and spelling- spelling street names
  • older kids can help with faxes and filing
  • younger kids can help with cleaning the outside of a listing....sweeping off a proch of a vacant listing, picking up newspapers, etc.`
  • licking envelopes and putting stamps on are one of my favorites~ saves me time and a ucky tongue
  • make everything into a game, or an activity
  • have them give you blog ideas

So even when us Grandparents have the kids for the day we can still do our jobs, and enjoy the kids.  Oh, and don't forget to go get ice cream or a treat when you're done :) :)

Kathy, I think kids love to get involved if you make it FUN....which it sounds like you did very well!  All around sounds like a wonderful day with your grandkids.

Kathy- Our 5 year old loves to help with the stamps and the envelopes. Of course, we don't actually lick the stamps or envelopes. This has started him to want to collect stamps too. Since we homeschool we create all kinds of 'classes' revolving around our real estate business.

When me and 5 of my kids ran away from my x husband, and we were on our own. My 2nd and 3rd sons were teenagers. They accompanied me on all my showings. This way I felt safe from my x as well as creepos and stalkers, of which I have had my share.

My daughters still work for and with us in many office duties.

Katerina- I remember the story of you starting over with the kids.  Having them work with you then, and having your little one do it now adds so much to your relationships; in my opinion.  And you're so right about how there are so many lessons that can be taught with the interactions of Real Estate.  Your little one is lucky in many respects.

Pam- I love 2 year olds.....now they are a little harder to get involved in your work, it's more like you are involved with their schedule :)  Have fun...my youngest is 5 and so inquisitive.

Kathy, all my kids have helped me at one time or the other, stapling flyers, taking down signs, making brochures, filing, cleaning my office. Yea they really liked that one. Sometimes they complain and other times it is no problem. Glad you had a fun day with your grandkids.

Missy- Yep....kids can be a good hlep doing those activities.  I have used my older one for faxing, filing and taking messages.  And they all have done postcards and fliers.  Love it :)

Sally- I just had Cierra the 8 year old read your comment....they laughed when I tried to give them the "Aunt Sally hug".  I only have one old enough to do any physical work, but he lives up in Lompoc.

Gary- Cookies and Cream or Rocky Road :) :)  I worked for 25 years with kids and am at complete ease with them.....they're more receptive than some of our peers, and a heck of a lot more fun...:)

I know I try to involve my kids as well as my client's kids as much as possible, it gives them a sense of involvement and in real estate there usually isn't a lot of that.

My kids LOVE helping me out!  Of course, I have much more administrative tasks to complete so I usually have something for them to do.  And EVERYTHING is a learning moment.  I love how you did that!

hey Kathy, I thought summertime was vacationtime, but not for a Realtor! Thatnks for your kind words at 'the beach' the other day :-)  I love this blog, and was so there with you while reading --- lost, but we are definitely somewhere syndrome... A commonplace for moi! Sounds like you are creating truly memorable times with them. Just tonight, my "kid" of 22 helped me measure a house for square footage. I drew the diagram & she wrote down the numbers that I called out, and held onto one end of the tape. I just love having helpers (and pizza together afterwards)! I look forward t your photography, as always.

Kathy - What a fun way to spend time with your grandkids.  I'll bet they enjoy spending time with their Granma and learning new things along the way.  My Grandma and great aunts were teachers so everything we did was a learning game.  Great memories.

Kathy, just wanted to clarify that I always look forward to your photography, even though there wasn't any in this post. I'm so spoiled with your terrific images, that I really do notice A LOT when they aren't included. :-)

Mara- I have a new picture that is not going here but on my outside blog....probably on Sunday night or Monday....it is a picture I took when I went on the Palm Spring Aerial Tamway....:)  Now, I am so glad you were there, somewhere with me driving around Oceanside LOL :)  I'm putting an image here for you from that day.

My Grandkids usually have a good time with me, that is if we don't have chores to do..... LOL :)  My daughter used to work with me, it can be fun.
