Consequences of a Highly Active Profile

hacker Richard Smith from American Acceptance Mortgage recently wrote a blog post titled “AR Spam and Predators”. The post reminded me that one of the consequences of having a highly visible profile is the tremendous increase of spam and unsolicited contacts you receive. SPAM email often carries dangerous links and attachments.

Internet browsing may also occasionally and unknowingly navigate to crafty malicious websites that flood your computer with ads, malware, spyware, keyloggers and others.

Beyond the solicitations that Richard detailed in his blog post there are a number of unscrupulous people on the internet that have the ideas of doing much worse. We need to be aware of the risks as well as what we click and link to. It consider it a wise investment to make sure our equipment is protected.

While most PCs have built in virus protection and firewall software they do a mediocre job at best. It is even more important if you are active daily on the internet. I recommend installing a third party security suite and keep on-top of your updates and renewals. Unless you have a Mac, if you don’t have a full security suite please do yourself a favor a get one this week.

If you do have suite or are considering getting one I really like a program called Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware always finds hazards that my security suite doesn’t. I have been very impressed with a number of applications Lavasoft has developed. Ad-Aware is by far the best and most useful.

The best thing about Ad-Aware is it has a FREE Version. You can read more about the software and the free download here.

What other tools do you use to protect yourself and your PC?

I've always wondered about key-loggers.  My system has always run a bit slow.  Also, I think I found someone in my computer once, I can't say 100% for sure, but I'm fairly certain.  I've run numerous different virus scans, had my system checked out, have a fire wall, yet something still doesn't seem right.  Any ideas?  Just the other day, my computer did a restart by itself, and it always comes to the log in screen.  When I came back to my computer, it was logged in.  Sounds fishy to me.  We can't find anything, but...call me more than a bit worried.  Suggestions anyone?

How about Macs?  Are they still pretty safe? I know that as they gain in popularity, they become a bigger target.

Gregory - I suggest you try Ad-Aware. See what the scan comes up with and removes. I have been virus free for over two years.

Ruthmarie - I think MACs are pretty safe because PCs have had the bullseye for so many years. Perhaps they may become a bigger target but now I think they are a safer bet from a security perspective.

Thanks for the heads up on Adware...I will check it out. Having a visable profile also brings a lot more telemarketers as well (:

Bill - I always ask the telemarketers to add me to their Do Not Call Lists. I am always respectful but have never bought anything from a telephone solicitation.

Very good advice.  I use both Ad-Aware and Spybot.  They seem to compliment each other with what they catch.  I also use AVG free version or Norton Antivirus.  Both are very effective.  All free products are available at download.com.

One other thing I would like to mention is that free games and music are NOT free.  They are loaded with lots of crap.  I can't tell you how many times my friends' kids crashed their family computers with their downloading.  My kids were forbidden to download from anywhere but iTunes.  Since I first made the rule, they have seen a lot of their friends crash their computers and now understand the importance.  I don't mind that it teaches them the ethics of purchasing copyrighted products, too.

Elaine - Having two young children who are becoming more active online I could not agree more. Start teaching them about Internet Security right from the get go. Explain the importance of keeping your password secret. Most importantly monitor and limit activities to pre-approved websites.

Great advice.

Thanks Elaine!

Howard,

Thanks again for the mention. I use Adaware. Our computer vendor recommended it some time ago. Another program that I'd like your thoughts on is http://www.ccleaner.com/

We started running this with adaware in our office. It cleans everything, including the browser memory and all registers. Not sure if it is better, complimentary, or just different than adaware.

Thanks for the thread. It is vitally important, and something that I tend to let slip.

Another topic that would be good for me is computer back up services. I can save files on the company server, which is backed up, but I think I need to back up my entire drive.

Thanks,

Richard

Richard - Unfortunately I had to learn the lesson about regular hard-drive back-ups the hard way. Once you loose all of your data you don't make that mistake again. PLEASE, back it up!!

I like ad-aware... I also like Richard's fave: ccleaner... it's not exactly anti-virus/anti-spam but it does clean up a lot of the junk that gets left behind.

Thanks for the information. It is really important to be prepared against intruders in this day and age.

Howard,

Just to follow up on the hard drive back up question.

Do you have an online storage system that you might recommend? Which do you use?
