Ways to Show Someone You Care
I got an article in my email tonight from Kaiser Permanente and one of the posts was 7 Ways to Show Someone You Care. I am reminded of how fast-paced our lives have become and the saying, they won't remember what you did but they'll remember how you made them feel, and how important it is for us to let our clients know we care. So, I thought I'd share a few of these gems.
- You can show someone you care by active listening - Nodding, smiling, saying "I see" or repeating a portion of what they said like "so what you are saying is..."
- When you are with your clients limit interruptions. I always tell people that when I am with them they are the most important thing at that time, if my phone rings I may glance at it just in case it's one of my kids, but otherwise they have my undivided attention. Their time is valuable too.
- We all need extra help sometimes. So offering to lend a helping hand packing boxes, helping them declutter, remove unwanted items, or on moving day coming by to help or bring a pizza for lunch.
- Take time to help your clients celebrate successes. Helping out with the housewarming party, babysitting the kids so they can sign the closing documents then taking everyone out for ice cream or a treat.
- Just be there for them, listen to them vent, hold their hand in tough times.
- Spend quality time with them, grab a coffee or a glass of wine (if that is their thing), Don't make it all about the business, just be there for them when they need someone.
- And, probably most importantly have an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for what you have, what your clients bring to you, and show them how grateful you are. I will always remember Bridget "Mortgage Mama" McGee who dropped off a bag of Gratitude stones on my desk one time. I still have one, the rest I shared with others as a reminder of my gratitude.
It is too easy to get caught up in the business, remember the movie Field of Dreams - build it and they will come. Some of my closest friends were once clients and some of my best referral sources have been friends. Make new friends, and keep the old - one is silver and the other is gold.
