Mercer Arboretum - very close to Spring TX!

After living in Spring TX for 11 years we finally decided to visit the Mercer Arboretum.  I don't have a clue why we waited so long.  Actually I take that back all this time I thought there was a charge and I guess I didn't want to pay.  Well guess what it is FREE!!!  With the price of gas I know we are all looking for ways to save money and it doesn't get much better than free.  Free and you can enjoy nature at its best it doesn't get much better than that.

The history of Mercer Arboretum goes back to 1949 when Charles and Thelma Mercer bought 14.5 acres of piney woods along Cypress Creek.  They cleared the land and created a beautiful garden oasis.  Prior to the purchase of this land in Thelma's words it was "a wild, wooded, burned out area."  They built their first home in what is now today's Volunteer Cottage.  They began clearing the land to make room for more trees such as dogwoods and hawthorns.  Thelma planted large camellias that still bloom throughout the garden.  She also introduced several exotic trees and plants that are still growing; including gingko and bauhinia.

Charles was a decorated World War II soldier, recognized engineer and dedicated civic worker.  Thelma kept him busy in their garden.  When she decided that they needed a pond Charles had her lay out the design with a garden hose.   Charles then used his engineering skills to build it for her.  It is still there and is known as Thelma's pond.  It is one of the favorite places at Mercer for photographers and children.  It still has Koi and large goldfish.  Considering how long Koi can live who knows some of the original Koi may be in there; if only they could talk.

Thelma's pond at the Mercer Arboretum

When the Mercers decided to retire back in 1973 Thelma wrote to the Harris County officials asking the county to purchase their site.  She could have sold it to a developer for a larger profit but the Mercers chose to offer the property to Harris County at a price far below market value.  The stipulation was that it must be used as a garden and horticultural education facility.  This was a grass roots effort and with the help of many garden clubs and community leaders Harris County bought the property.

Thelma Mercer wrote a letter to Harris County

The vision of Thelma a Charles Mercer became a reality.  Mercer Arboretum has become a nationally recognized Botanic Garden.  It is an oasis of serenity with over 250 acres of East Texas Piney Woods.  We went there on a hot Sunday afternoon and it was actually quite refreshing walking through the trees.  We passed a couple on a swing who told us this was the ultimate in laziness.

Relaxing at the Mercer Arboretum is the utmost in laziness

Mercer Arboretum is a living museum.  From the ferns to the majestic oaks all the plants have a story.  After living in several different states we have learned that it is important to use plants that are local to the area when you are landscaping.  We love working in the yard and this would have made our gardening so much easier as the plants are labeled.  There is an abundance of animal life sometimes slithering through the garden.  We saw a beautiful snake.  I really have not thought of snakes as being pretty but this one had some gorgeous coloring.

Wildlife abound at the Mercer Arboretum

The funds for the Mercer Arboretum come from Precinct 4 and the Mercer Society.  If you would like information about becoming a member to the Mercer Society click here.  Friend's memberships range from $25 to $50.  Friends of the society enjoy discount coupons to plant sales, discounts for classes, invitation to special event etc.  The funds from Precinct 4 and the Mercer Society provide for educational programs, plant collections, capital improvements and conservation efforts.  You don't have to join the Society to enjoy the Arboretum; did I mention it is FREE!!!

Herb Garden at the Mercer Arboretum

Since opening to the public in 1974 the Arboretum has thrived using a base of volunteers.  Volunteers work with the staff in the gardens and greenhouses, lead educational tours, improve the Mercer library and catalogue plant specimens for the herbarium.  Volunteers might be doing such things as building benches, propagating plants and organizing special events.  The volunteers include plant and nature enthusiast of all ages and skill levels.  If you would like more information about volunteering at the arboretum you can email them at MercerArboretum@hcp4.net.

Day Lily at the Mercer Arboretum

This just goes to show what a local citizen can do with a little ingenuity.  Charles and Thelma were not wealthy but Thelma did not like the idea of a bulldozer coming in and destroying the work of nature they had preserved.  In a letter to Harris County back in 1973 she wrote:

"The idea of bulldozers coming in here and destroying the work of nature that we had tried to preserve and learn about and learn to love and enjoy is hard to take."

Thelma was a conservationist before her time and her vision still lives at Mercer Arboretum.  Don't wait 11 years to visit.  All ages can enjoy the arboretum.  I saw retired couples and families with young children out for a Sunday stroll.  It doesn't get much better than FREE either!

The Arboretum is a great place to take your family on a Sunday afternoon

Mercer Arboretum is located on Aldine Westfield just to the north of FM 1960 (on the east side of the road).  Their summer hours are from 8:00AM to 7:00 PM and from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sunday.  Winter hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To visit the Mercer Arboretum website click here.

In actuality Mercer has a Humble address but it is so close to Spring I am including it in my Spring TX information.

I loved this post Marchel. Don't wait 11 years and BTW it is free. Great picture of the snake, and ALL the pictures were beautiful. That is how I am with zoos too. I need to go more often. Get out early before it is too hot in the summertime.

Very nicely done, Marchel!

Great photos and text, both.

GARY, Did I mention it was FREE!!  We had fun and got to try out our new camera lens also.

MIKE, Thanks!  I usually make my pictures smaller but for this post I decided I needed those large pictures so you could see the detail of the garden.

Beautiful pictures Marchel.  I remember as a teenager my mom use to take off for an Arboretum to get away from the hecticness of 5 teenagers.  She used to say the beauty of it would call her 'shattered nerves'.  I don't believe I've ever been to one - I'm not even sure if there is one in Las Vegas - I will have to do some research.

Marchel:  Just here chiming in with compliments on such incredibly beautiful pictures.  The Mercer Arboretum looks more like the Garden of Eden.  I could easily see spending an entire day there marveling at all the beauty it has to offer.  Thanks so much for sharing.

Marchel,
Well if there was an admission charge, you could sell these photos and get more than the cost back!  Lovely!

Marchel--Beautiful photos! What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon...and my favorite type of gardening where someone else takes care of everything. There is an arboretum just outside of Minneapolis too, though I have not been there. I have been to the beautiful Conservatory at Como Park many times since I was a kid. Beautiful flowers and plants indoors.

You did it !!

It looks amazing. WOW, this is a great localism post, Marchel. What a wonderful place to know about in Spring, TX.

KATHLEEN, We went there to try out our new lens and I was pleased with the results.  I especially liked the close up of the snake as we did not have to get close.

MARY, I was married in an Arboretum in Kansas in 1976.  It was a beautiful flower garden.  Now I'm wondering if it is still there; that might be something to do when we go back to visit my husband's parents.  That is if my parents can remember the name of it as I had other things on my mind at the time.

KAREN ANNE, The garden of Eden sounds like a good name for the Mercer Arboretum.  I expect that Thelma would have loved her garden being called that.  Isn't it amazing what a woman with a little ingenuity can accomplish.  You can see God's footprint all through the garden and I am sure she would love that and everyone getting to enjoy God's beauty through her garden.

CYNTHIA,Thanks!  I am enjoying this new lens on our camera.  We got it mainly for my localism pictures and I can tell it is going to work quite nice.

TERI, It is amazing what grows outdoors here.  When we moved here I was TOTALLY amazed; plants that I thought were only outdoor plants grew in the ground.  We bought a new house and did not know the local vegetation.  This place would have been a gold mine; but I did not know about.  Then once I did find out about it I never took the time to go but now I know.

MISSY, Thanks!  I hope people moving here will visit so they can learn about the local vegetation the easy way instead of going about it the hard way like I did.

Who says Texas is flat and devoid of vegetation?  You've just proved them wrong!  Beautiful photos!

I am going to join the Mercer Society.

Thank ya kindlly for sharing your day with all of us.

That is a cute little ol snake, for sure.

TOM, It is a beautiful spot.  I'm not sure why it took a new camera lens to get me there but the lens did a GREAT job!  I can see where this will be a fun spot to go with the different seasons.  Well as different as our seasons get.  We really only have summer and January.

BECKY, It is a special place.  I really loved learning the history of it also.

06/30/2008 10:31 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

GARY WHITE, It is one of those places you can just enjoy.  I love the picture of the senior citizens sitting in the swing.  You could tell they were loving it!

LINDA, Thelma had insight before her time and now we all can enjoy.  They were not wealth people either so she just found a way to preserve what they had built.  I would not think snakes could be cute but that was a cute snack.  The cool thing was with this new lens we could be way far away from it and zoom in and get a picture like that.  Personally I don't want to be very close to any snake.

06/30/2008 10:35 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

RICKI, Thanks!  It was a fun post to do!  I especially enjoyed the research.

DALE, That Mercer Society is something isn't it?  It amazed me what came from one woman't ingenuity.  It is a cute snack and I'm really glad I did not have to be close when taking the picture.

Marchel - That was a great way to spend a day.  Your photos are awesome but I just don't know about that snake.  Yes with the high gas price it is a good time to remind people about the great places in their own backyards.

What a really nice place . We love those little treasures and will plan on going there!

This is one of my favorite places to go. I grew up near there off of Treaschwig. I can't believe  you had never seen it. You can canoe along the creek too if you have a mind to. You get in across the street from the arboretum. I live an hour away but still try to get by there every few months. It's an oasis for sure.

What beautiful pictures Marchel, you are quite the photographer.  I really like the photo of the pond and of the couple on the swing...I wish that could be my backyard!!!

Marchel, I want to go! What a beautiful place to visit. The photos are awesome, I really like the pond and the gardens. Reminds me of Castle in the Clouds in New Hampshire, that's not free! Thanks for sharing your day.

TERI, I love this kind of stuff also.  We were married in an Arboretum 32 years ago July 31st.  Time does fly.  My children now laugh about our hippy wedding.  We didn't spend much on it but it has survived where a lot of those costly weddings have not.

JENNIFER, that was the REALLY COOL thing about our new lens.  We were fairly far away from that snake because believe me I would not have that picture otherwise.  It was a pretty snake though.

TREY, It is not far from College Station; you will enjoy the excursion.

CHERI, you don't know how many times I drove by that Arboretum.  Call me cheap I figured it cost and just didn't check farther.  Now that I have been I will be back.  I'll bet that was a great place to grow up.  Back then I expect it was a lot of wilderness.

Marchel, this is a GREAT post.  Your pictures make it seem so relaxing and inviting.  I liked how you formatted the post.  We were able to really appreciate the pictures this way.

250 acres is huge.  I may have to go see it sometime for myself.   I liked the picture with the couple on the swing.  I'm impressed with your snake picture.  I guess it is prettier than copperheads and some of the other brown snakes, but.....

Marchel I love this post.  Beauty of nature and free sound like music to my ears.  The pictures are fantastic.  You should submit them to that sight that selects pictures for photographs, paintings, postcards, and those type of things.

Sondra, Thank!  I usually make all my pictures 350 but decided for this particular post to make the pictures as big as possible as the post was about the pictures.  I love that picture of the older couple.  It was just so natural and they were just having a great time.  They were actually swinging so the first picture I took you couldn't see their face but the second picture worked. The snake was pretty cool; that is as far as snakes go.....

CINDY, I really did love walking around at the Arboretum.  I can't believe I waited 11 years to go.  Dang I'm tight I always thought there was a price involved.

Old Town Spring has some fun functions also.  They are have a hot rod festival in September and a pet fest in October.

Hi Marchel - I saw your post mentioning this on another blog. Very nice photos! I was down that way a few weeks ago and wish I knew about this place then. We'll definitely have to remember it the next time I'm down there.

Stephen, I enjoyed the arboretum and it was a great place to try our new lens out.

Robert, We do have some beautiful places.  I had no idea before moving here that it was so sub tropical.

Alan, Thanks!  I checked your blog out and see you are in to on line marketing so that means a lot to me.  We are enjoying our new hobby.  I was trying a new lens out at the arboretum.  I have missed my camera this week as my husband took it to Alaska.  It will be interesting to see the shots he got though.  So what brings you clear down here from Boston?
