Caring for a Senior Pet

By

Caring for a senior pet is a lot of work, but it's also a gift.  Some might not agree, but we owe it to them for all the love and companionship they've given us throughout the years.

Corrie came to us 5 years ago after Buttons passed.  A beautiful retired show girl, she was 8.5 years old.  We thought it would be good for Gracie, who was 11 at the time.

Everyone was depressed.  Corrie saved us.  She really did.  And now it's our time to give back for as long as it lasts.

Corrie and Gracie bonded, but not like they had been together their entire lives.  It's hard when you have two princesses living in the same house.  Gracie was used to being the princess, while Corrie was a retired Grand Champion who knew she was a princess.  I lovingly called her, Miss Fancy Pants.

Time marches on.  Gracie passed this year at 15.  It was heartbreaking.  She was one of those dogs who just got under your skin.  Everyone who met her loved her.  She was super smart and full of life for the 15 years she was here, but it was her time.  She passed peacefully at home.

Corrie has a list of medical issues, and it's been my turn to take care of her.  After all, she came to us when we needed saving.  She needs us, and we owe her.  Along with her illnesses, she's lost most of her eyesight.  Getting old isn't for the faint of heart!

To a pet parent, it's just what we do.  They get sick.  We take care of them.  They're part of the family.  I never gave it a second thought.

She is the sweetest girl and so good.  She is tough as nails and has taught me about strength.  Corrie loves to walk despite severe back problems.  She loves to eat - boy, does she love to eat!  Anything, anytime, anywhere!  And she loves to chew on bones.  As long as she's happy doing what she loves, I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

Thank you Marichin for sending Corrie to us.

Elyse immediately ‘got’ us

We found Elyse on-line after working with another realtor that was not helping us find what we wanted. Elyse immediately ‘got’ us and showed us the right properties while providing encyclopedic knowledge of neighborhoods, dog restrictions, lifestyle options and benefits/trade offs between one house/neighborhood and the other. Elyse consistently provided important information at every stage of our process. As out-of-towners this was essential to our making the right decision. We couldn’t be happier or more grateful to Elyse for everything she’s done. Elyse is a rare combination of being a true subject matter expert and, more importantly, a genuinely caring person who looks after her people.

Elyse,

Yes, that is what we all do when it comes to older pets.  They give so much to us as we do for them.  A

Elyse- I feel your pain and I know that you are caring for Corie as best you can. When our last Brittany became blind and had an accompanying illness with that, Larry and I made homemade dog treats and cooked all of her meals. For all of the joy they bring to us, it's the least a pet parent can do.

Kathy, I'm sorry about your Brittany.  I cooked for her but found she does better on her food - except for hard boiled eggs.  Those are her favorite and she gets them.  You're right, it's the least we can do.

Good morning, Elyse... I found myself nodding in agreement as I read your post. I've cared for many a pet who had reached the age of 15 and more. It's so hard to let them go... but I've always found comfort in my memories of them and in knowing that I gave them the best life possible.

Good Afternoon Nina Hollander, Broker , It is so hard to let them go.  I was just thinking about all the pets I've had and the many memories I'm so grateful for.  You understand.

Elyse, it is ALWAYS tough caring for our pets in their later years.   Mid-year 2021, my kitty passed at 20.5 years old.   Now I have two kittens.

Joan, I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty.  20.5 is good!  Enjoy your kittens.  They sound adorable.
