Friday Fun…National Grammar Day

Today, March 4, is National Grammar Day so let’s have some fun.  If anyone can get Marte Cliff to chime in, that would be even more fun.

It doesn’t matter how it began nor is this an opportunity to call out others for their misuse of certain words. (we’ve seen that already in some comments on social media.)

However, how we say and write things is as important as what we are saying. Given what we hear coming out of the mouths of newsreaders it would seem that grammar or the correct use of words is on the decline. But it still matters.

There are certain words that tend to confuse us. I still have to stop and think before I use effect and affect. Check more out here.

I love this short video from Weird Al Yankovic

But what about you? Share with us in the comment what grammar oops moments are like nails on the chalkboard to you?

Nina Hollander, Broker you and I are two peas in a pod on grammar. I used to excel at diagramming sentences but now, I don't know if I would remember.  What gets me is when people say "Me and Jeff....."

Gwen Fowler-864-638-3599 SC * Mountain* Lake*Home you're welcome.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD oh yes....I hear that so many times. Don't they teach this in school??? In the past, the worst offense might have been someone saying ain't.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I understand that there are some words that can be confusing but it truly is like nails on a chalkboard.

George Souto I had a friend just like that. He was amazing with numbers but couldn't spell at all!

I love the term 'dangling participles' since grade school!   I thought that was such a funny way to call those little buggers!!   Love Weird Al's video!  What a great way to teach kids (and adults)!!

Excellent post. Proper grammar is one of my pet peeves--and I remain a steadfast supporter of the semi-colon. Thanks for the post, Kathy!

I am not in rigid in my thoughts about the English language as some are.   However, I sometimes cringe when I hear the word, "like" continually intertwined in a sentence.  Teenagers seem to be the most guilty of doing that!

If they only understood is all we hear is "like" and not what they are saying in between the "likes".

HI Kathy Streib - I use Grammerly to get most words correct.  I had to laugh in the video they used "Moran" for moron.  My last name was Moran before I got married. Happy Friday!

I had never heard Weird Al's Word Crimes. I LOVED every second of it. I'm so glad you included it in the post!

Such a fun video! Probably incomprehensible to most people writing out there.

I love grammar - I'm such a nerd a I have a collection of grammar books (probably shouldn't admit that.)

I WILL NOT GIVE UP THE OXFORD COMMA

Kathy, I use Grammerly too, which catches most of them, but I get confused with affect and effect also.

Kathy, funny you choose Effect and Affect.  Immediately those two came to mind because I too need really concentrate on what I am trying to say the the proper word.  Make it a great weekend ahead.  m

Hi Kathy:

What a fun and clever video. I wonder what they ARE teaching in school these days? With social media so prevalent I imagine much is learned there and it's not all good!. Typos are one thing, poor grammar is quite another matter.

Dear Kathy,

Not wishing for the return of letter trays, but ever since desktop publishing started, people do (publish without proofreading). Guilty myself at times, which is why I love to borrow another set of eyes to tell me the obvious.

Word crimes - now, THAT is hilarious, Kathy! I will have that jingle in my head for the rest of the day!

I'm with you - the use of grammar tends to shed light on the writer and/or speaker.
