Did you know that you could be breaking a federal law and facing penalties for washing your car at home or power washing? It is illegal for contaminated water to go down storm drains.
Here in Houston, fines for violators can range from $1000 to $250,000 a day. The larger fines are mostly composed of commercial car washes. The chemicals that we use to clean, along with the oils, and grease that come off of the cars and concrete are hazardous to our water system. The water that goes down the storm drains goes into the bayou which goes into the gulf affecting our fish and then us. Galveston Bay has high levels of bacteria, oil, grease and metals that are contaminating our Gulf.
The small fish start to eat it, the bigger fish eat them, and we eat the bigger fish ending up back in our body.
The Clean Water Act has been around for 30 years, but Houston authorities are now cracking down on offenders.
Commercial Car washes are suppose to adhere to guidlines as set forth by the EPA, and use the proper reclaim and filtration system.
So next time you wash your car or power wash, make sure the water is not running down a main storm drain, it could be the most expensive car wash you're car has ever had!
Check your cities policies to avoid a fine.

Wow, those are some pretty steep fines... I mean eating the fish--and the potential health risks that go along with putting all that stuff in our bodies!
