Sex with CoffeeAs I think about the coffee shop in Bonney Lake that has woman, first in bikini's, then pasties, serving up coffee to patrons, it made me wonder that question.  While it would not benefit me directly, indirectly it could with more loan signings - if I lived in the area of course.  I would think it is not all that bad for the area either, despite its' uproar.  What about all the free publicity?  I am several thousand miles away and I have heard about it! I wonder if the owner of the shop has ties to real estate.  Just think of all the Realtors in that area that will be getting calls from people wanting to buy in that area, not because of the coffee shop, but because they saw the area, liked it, and now want to move there.  Some might wait until the publicity dies down, but some will not wait!  Of course we may not know the true motives in this, or any publicity stunt like it, but it makes me think about the possibilities.   Also as I mentioned what about the benefit from the ripple effects.  So is it all that bad?  Does it hurt anyone?  After all, we always say 'sex sells' and that is so very true!  Look at Donald Trump's Apprentice TV show, several teams of woman have used this strategy, and used it well to get far into the show!  Who always parades around the cars we want to buy?

Getting back to the coffee shop, doesn't the entire area benefit from the publicity, even those upset by the ghastly view?  More business, more taxes collected, as I said, not only from the coffee shop itself, but just in general in the area.  It brings people there and even if they come for the view, I am sure many buy more than just coffee at that shop.  Maybe fill up at the local gas station, stop in another shop to pick up an item, grocery store, etc, and maybe even stop in the local real estate office and decide to buy a home? Then receive the taxes on the sale, property taxes in the future, purchases at all the local stores now that the person lives there, and on and on.

So back to my original question - Does a little breasts & nudity with that coffee go a long way, and is it all that bad? Sex after all, does sell!

Good Lord Ron,

How did you find out the info on the girls in Bonney Lake?   That is up here, South of Seattle and Northeast of Tacoma.     Don't know if sex sells homes ??? ... I think it is price, location and presentation.  There are so many coffee stops here, not sure if it adds any activity.  Made the TV news guys a good story though.

I don't think its bad per se.  Anything of that nature tends to generate business, but there is a pretty fine line there between tastefulness and gaudiness.  Not having visited the coffee shop in person, I'm not sure how much I can say about its impact on local culture, but will use instead our local "Hooters" as a comparison.  We finally got our "Hooters" restaurant a few years back, amid the protests of many, and now nobody even notices it.  I mean, it has a core of patrons and stays busy, or at least appears to stay busy based on the fullness of the parking lot when I drive by.  The few times I have been in have not impressed me with either their food or their service, which while not being terrible was still a long way from great.  I guess, to me, businesses that rely on their clients attraction to the fairer sex will probably lack in quality, be it quality of product or quality of service, or both.  Just my opinion.  Interesting post.

Gary, considering how many miles away, it is interesting, isn't it!  Smiley Face

Ray, thanks again for stopping by, glad you found it interesting!  Have a great week!

Dan, absolutely!  BTW, I was born in Philly & graduated from CB West.  Not too far from you, and my sister lives in Chester Co I believe.  Have a great day!

I'm probably the only female that will post to this lol! But I agree with you completely. A few years ago, here in Tampa, we had the big lap dance debate, as you may remember. I thought it was the most absurd thing I've ever seen that the city would actually enact laws that reduce its tourists dollars. Who was it hurting anyway? No one who didn't want to see it was forced into the establishments where it took place. I say give the customer what they want and make the buck.

What bothers me the most is that the term "Sex Sells " has become such a catch phrase in our society and so few seem to have a problem with it. When we look at the effect such a cavalier attitude has had on our society, ie. divorce rates, out of wedlock children, death from std's it is really disheartening.

07/03/2008 07:25 AM by Hugh Krone Sussex County NJ Century 21 Realtor (Century21BillSemmens)

Ron - I am just glad you were not suggesting that we wear pasties while showing clients around. I have never seen anything else other than coverage of the topless car wash, or bikini clad car hops on any of those features.

I think it is the subtlety of sex that sells, not the blatant gimmick, like Paris Hilton's Carl's/Hardee's commercial.

I do know an agent that covers a nudist colony in FL...she is selling homes left and right.

Karen, hey, your right, your not the only one, and also as you say, what difference does it really make?  Hugh, not sure much I can say, I'm not sure it is always cavalier, but how does these woman running around in bikini's, topless, etc., have much of a negative effect on anyone?  (understand I do not mean doing this where kids and such can see of course)  If you have a good looking body, I'd say go for it.  As long as these woman are not being forced, they hopefully are doing something they like, making a lot of money (I hope anyway with tips & such) and don't mind men admiring their bodies.  Mike, nope, not sure that would work, but who knows!!  :-)  Clint, Land O Lakes/Lutz area has several, and hey I wouldn't mind doing loan closings there, nudity is not the same as sex though!!  Although it is 'sex' in the sense that we are looking at these woman, and that is bringing in lots of business, hence the phrase, 'sex sells'.  Robert, your welcome for the info, glad to help!  Thanks for the compliment, as far as topics, I honestly never know.  I scan other's blogs, I have Google searching phrases and things of interest to me - and sometimes I get a thought from that, then post a blog, these are just some of the ways.  I get an idea, start a draft blog, gather info, then post when I am done.  Pretty simple.  Thanks everyone for stopping by, have a great holiday weekend!

This is great - unless of course it happens to be YOUR DAUGHTER! Men go to places like Hooters because they think they have a good chance of getting some. And very often, they do!!! It sends a message. As far as sex selling - of course it does because we are all fundamentally animals. Monogamy is a triumph of civilisation over instinct. Interesting discussion though.

Ron,

My opinion, yes sex sells, whether it's a catch phrase or what!

In Las Vegas, I have come across people & friends interested in purchasing a home. I mentioned like agents do that I sell homes and can get you into a nice home, great value, etc. Some have asked me, how much do you make on the deal? What do I get in return if I buy a home through you and you get this large commission check? I mention to them what I will do for them, Blah, Blah, Blah.

Then some tell me that they were at a Gentlemans club last night and this Beautiful Young Lady that was dancing for them was a Realtor dancing part time and would give him anything he would like if he bought a home from her.

I don't want to hear from anyone that sex doesn't sell!

Thanks again for the blog!

Simon, well, hopefully the woman is an adult and making decisions she wants.  Of course the guys want some and get it, but then, it does take two!  As long as she is not forced in ANY way, I see no problem, even if it was my daughter, I would hope she would not be that promiscuous and that I taught her better morals, but none-the-less, it is her choice!  Thanks for stopping by, have a great holiday weekend!!  Robert, not sure that is a good thing, but I can say I'm sure it would not be the first or last time that would happen!  Thanks again everyone, have a safe & enjoyable July 4th!!

Ronald - it is always somebody's daughter. Promiscuity is not a good thing and encouraging it is most certainly not good. Read your history. The parallels between us right now the the decline and fall of the Roman Empire are very scary.

07/03/2008 04:07 PM by Simon Conway (Picket Fence Realty)

Simon - I go to Hooters for the wings and I read Playboy for the articles;^)

Actually, it's been about 8 years since I've been in a Hooters, maybe 30 since I've read a Playboy.

I have never known anyone go to a Hooters and score with a waitress.

07/03/2008 05:21 PM by Mike Saunders (Keller Williams Realty - Greater Athens)

Sex may sell but that doesn't mean it's tasteful to use it as a selling tool. If those women want to demean themselves that way then it's their choice. I'd prefer to use my brains than my body. I was disillusioned like them in my early 20s. I grew up and realized how rediculous it was to put myself on display like that for a good tip.

Here's a good tip for those girls....get a real job where your employer isn't exploiting you for his/her own gain. Then again, I guess us agents get "exploited" by our brokers in a way but at least we get to keep our clothes on!

07/03/2008 06:09 PM by Cheri' Smith (ERA Whitaker Realty)

That would be a hard sale here in the midwest, this is would not be in our best interest in the real estate industry. We have enough image building issues now....

07/03/2008 11:32 PM by Jack Climer Realty, LLC

Simon, no matter who's daughter, if she chooses that, then so be it.  As I said, no matter who's daughter she may be, hopefully she would have higher standards, but bottom line, it would be her choice if she is an adult.  Also, I agree with Mike, I've never known anyone to go to Hooters and score with a waitress.  No doubt that happens, I'm sure it does, but if they are TWO consenting adults, that is their choice.  I, and I am sure you would say probably a very bad choice, but again, that is their choice, wear bikini, wear no top, or have sex.  Any of those choices are still an option, maybe not good moral ones, but legal option none-the-less that doesn't hurt anyone either.  Cheri, I'd say it is best if you can use your brains AND your body (not saying these woman are doing that mind you!), but like you said, many employees are exploited in many different ways.  As long as these woman are WILLING, I don't feel they are being exploited.  Believe me, the sights at Hooters, and probably this coffee shop are great from a guys point of view, and I can't blame the woman for using what they have, if they enjoy their job, then I say go for it.  If this coffee shop were right around the corner from my home, they wouldn't get business from me, only because I don't drink coffee.  I can't tell you the last time I went to Hooters, probably a couple years ago, and believe me, I love the sights as well, but I like a local restaurant's wings better.  I'm not against these restaurants and shops, and I see nothing wrong with them, I just can't be bothered to go there unless I went with a group that really wanted to go to that restaurant, then I would certainly go with them and enjoy the view.

Jack, I would imagine, in almost all areas, it would bring more 'foot traffic' and therefore more business.  Of course there are those that object (as they are out there) but the more people to a place like that, the more taxes, more business in general, and I would say good for any city economy - especially these days when so many are hurting so much!

Simon, Mike, Cheri, and Jack have a great and safe July 4th holiday!
