STOP Running with Scissors!
My mother would slow us down in a hurry by saying that. It worked. She also taught us the importance of taking the time to do chores right, whether doing laundry, especially folding clothes neatly then putting them away or when washing dishes by hand, getting everything squeaky clean.
Anything less than set expectations didn't quite muster, she'd learn ya, durn ya! Her teachings continue to play a part in actions taken on behalf of people who depend on the expertise and local knowledge necessary to achieve their home goals. Nothing less will do for me either, with clients.
Mistakes are often made because:
- someone half-heartedly, hurriedly puts in the effort
- anger guides the ego when a disagreement comes into play
- some people think they know-it-all, discounting experienced advice
Three things to avoid at all times:
- Showing lack of care because more emphasis relates to getting paid quicker than servicing the clients wants and needs. Encouraging them to rush the process by changing the terms by pushing timelines up after acceptance is a sign that the clients are not put first in the transaction.
- Taking a snippy tone because mistakes are brought to attention on the real estate purchase contract by another professional. Please keep in mind that even a small error can have a huge impact on everyone plus the burden of agent behavior is also placed upon the broker's shoulders.
- Using creative writing when filling out an addendum, that may be misconstrued as practicing law. Recklessly winging-it to save time, rather than consulting an attorney or broker could lead to a panel of peers to decide a fate. A self-promoting, KIA doesn't fit well this industry well.
It is impossible to demand professional standards from those with a weak work ethic. Lessons can be/often are most painful for those who think of a transaction as a race to the finish line and can be akin to running with scissors, the danger is real. Many agents finally realize it on the way out.
