One of the homes we enjoy walking by on the beach has a totem pole. "The word totem derives from the Algonquian word odoodem [oˈtuːtɛm] meaning "kinship group". The carvings may symbolize or commemorate ancestors, cultural beliefs that recount familiar legends, clan lineages, or notable events. "
We are both fascinated by the artistry and the significance behind them. I recently read a book that the carvings often represent the guardian spirits in the form of animals in the Native American culture. Of course, each tribe has their own symbols and meanings.
Happy Friday!
