I'm wondering if the rest of the real estate professionals out there are feeling this way....  is it just me or are buyers more sketchy this year than ever?  And why are they procrastinating?  It's July 1 (well almost) and we are finally starting to see the "lake buyer's" and finally seeing the lake market hit.   Are people really buying into the drive-by media?  Are buyers still wary?  Interest rates are at their lowest (common sense says they can only go up from here) inventory is abundant and varied and prices are great!  What is stopping buyers?  I'm interested to hear if anyone else out there is frustrated.

And in the spirit of fairness, there are some sellers out there that decide to put their house on the market and only after an offer comes in realize that they don't want to sell their house.

What can we do as agents to 'stir the pot' and get buyers and sellers excited about the real estate market?

Melissa, No that is what I see also. i did some research yesterday sitting at an open house. i saw that from this time this year to last year and 2006 that we are off on buyers around 250 to 300 in two counties and one city. This is off on the buyers by almost 1000 buyers. That is a lot.

I was talking to a young lady who wants a new home the media scared her and she will resign her apartment agreement for another year and see what is up next year.

I do not get it. Now it the time, people need to get into the game.

Loans are getting better and better. There are ways to get 100% financing.

i am missing this boat also.

Let me know when you find the answer.

The media is playing this down market so it is going even further down...We need to disseminate some good news once in awhile...there IS some good news ONCE in a while too.  For instance, today, rates have dropped by an eighth.  They haven't done this in a month or so...why isn't this publicized - another good reason to buy NOW!

I forgot to mention something else to you gals...I love the Ithaca area.  One of my son's graduated from Cornell.  It was always so much fun to visit him there.  From winetasting, to climbing the gorges and picnicing near the fabulous falls.  What a beautiful area!  Lucky you!

Hello New Yorkers, I feel your pain!!  Here we are in summer and our numbers aren't budging.  Buyers are still in wait mode, despite the inventory and interest rates.  It's like everyone showed up at a 4 way stop at the same time and no one's moving! Very, very frustrating.  I really think it's the economy in general - oil prices, groceries, car sales are down, people just aren't buying because of all the uncertainty.  I really have no idea how to turn this attitude around.

I like the 4-way stop analogy, that's what it feels like!  Thank you for all the great feedback.  Now, how as Realtors, do we get the media to start focusing on the positive? Because for every negative experience, there is a good one.

I believe too that the media has most people scared to do anything, buy or sell.  The media thrives on negativity. By the way, the gorges there are beautiful!!! but does the lake ever warm up?

Thank you, all the gorges and waterfalls are a nice perk to living here in Ithaca.  And yes, the lake does warm up. :-)  My teammate Lindsay,  volunteers for an event every Aug on the lake, which includes her kayaking out on the lake at dawn and she says the lake water has always been comfortable.
