Just for the Record

I don't know how old you have to be to remember your parents buying or at least listening to these music collections by Readers Digest and other big names in music (yes Readers Digest was a big name in music collections).

I can tell you that I'm 67 and these records were a staple in our household. At the time my folks were buying this music I was buying Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

That was 50 years ago. Today I am enjoying both. My favorites are the hits of the 40's and 50's as well as theme collections like this one:

Being homebound tomorrow and most likely Thursday, due to a freak winter storm, I am looking forward to listening to a couple of sets or more as I blog and take care of business.

I doubted the weatherman's prediction that we may recieve 36" of snow from this storm. Hate to say it but I think I am becoming a believer.

Not only do I remember the Reader's Digest collections, my dad worked there for many years and got discounts on all their products. I don't have any albums in my possession but I do have two Readers Digest piano music books. Gotta love music!

And 36"! Yikes!

Good morning Bob. Rock-n-Roll from the 50's is my favorite music! Never got into the English invasion of the early mid 60's. As for snow hope you get closer to 3.6 than 36. Enjoy the view.

Hi Bob,
Sadly, I don't remember music in our home prior to my parents dying or after I moved in with my Aunt and Uncle. I did listen to my own personal radio as a teen and I started buying a lot of music myself (albums and 8-tracks) after I got out on my own. That ages me, doesn't it?  😊

Good morning, Bob... I grew up with a Readers Digest Magazine subscription but not with records from them. My mother worked three jobs... very little time to listen to music... so when we did, it was music that came from the radio.

Hello Bob - I remember a lot of things.  Albeit to say, some of it obscure or inconsequential.  that said, Reader's Digest as a source of records seems to be a blank in my memory bank.  However, the comments on this and other posts often provide a treasure trove of recollections and insight.

I have 19 "sets" at this time Endre Barath, Jr. and I am always looking for more. I am pretty picky about the sets and I have bought some and then given them back to the thrift store. Most thrift stores in our are sell all records, even multi-record sets, for a dollar.

I have come to love the big bands of the 40's Ed Silva and I am often surprised to see originals that later became rock and roll hits.

I am listening to a 40's collection right now and I just heard Jessica Rabbit's show stopper (from the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit) done by Benny Goodman and sung by Peggy Lee (a North Dakota native).

That is so cool Kat Palmiotti ! I have always, and still do, love Readers Digest.

As far as the 36" I think we may exceed it as we now have 18" (unofficially but measured right in my yard) and we are not half way through this system.

You know Carol Williams I don't remember my folks playing all (any) of the music collected with the exception of The Mamas & Poppas. I also started purchasing LP's  and cassettes as a teen. No singles for me.

Nina Hollander, Broker when I look back it's hard to believe we were fascinated with listening to music on a transistor radio. Now it's hard to imagine being WOWed by Alice cooper on a transistor and an ear phone.

Bob "RealMan" Timm we didn't have a transistor radio at home. It was a plug in that was in the kitchen. I don't think I had a transistor until I was in college.

HI Bob-Larry got back into vinyl several years ago and bought a really nice turntable. We found albums online and in Goodwill Stores.
