How do you work with someone who negotiates with a sledgehammer?

Sure, this kind of negotiator might get a few extra perks, but at the same time, they might be destroying the joy of buying and selling.

Negotiation is a win-win when everyone gets most of what they want.

It is not to beat the other person up so much that even minor requests are denied. 

I'm curious how you deal with a sledgehammer negotiator.

Good morning Margaret. Hold a sledgehammer and you are likely to hear "what part of NO don't you understand" more often than not. You can try to intimidate but these shoes are made for walking. Explain that to your customer. Enjoy your day.

Good morning Margaret. From my past experiences, I found the sledgehammer position to be always intriguing.  My response usually is "May I ask several  questions? What is the desired end result you are looking to achieve? And are you willing to lose that desired end result? Possibly we may wish to consider starting this conversation over? So where do we go from here?"  This has always been fairly successful for me.

Hello, Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 they can be fun to work with - playing the mind game.  It all really depends on what the issues are. It can be like talking a "jumper off the bridge" bringing them back and grounding them to a "how can we best make this work" mentality.

My favorite way to handle the sledgehammer negotiation is usually to walk away, especially when other options are clearly available.  Sometimes you have to dig in with a "take it or leave it" approach, but that's rare.  Everyone can win, even in this crazy market!
