Getting to Know Ray Henson-May Challenge

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. (lic. #01878277) DRE# 00949880

1. What was your first job and what did you learn from it? Roofing was my first job and I learned to study hard in school because roofing was too tough for me.

2. How long have you been in the real estate or related service industry? I have been in real estate sales for about 12 years. I started my career in the midst of the Great Recession.

3. What is your biggest fear and what have you done to try to conquer it? My greatest fear is jumping out of an airplane and that is even WITH a parachute. The closest that I ever came to conquering it was going ziplining in Maui. Now, even that would have been a bridge too far, but I won a free trip to zipline and I am so cheap that I did not want to waste my winnings. I know what you are thinking. If Ray won a trip to go skydiving, he would do it. You would be wrong, though.

4. What would you do if you knew you would not fail? Jump out of an airplane!

5. What is a habit you would love to eliminate or change? I would love to control my caloric intake.

6. What is your favorite meal (forget about calories or what you shouldn’t eat) Anything cooked by my dad, especially his specialty, Mexican food. The meal would consist of his turkey enchiladas (a Thanksgiving staple in our family), chili rellenos, chili verde, fideo de sopa and margaritas! #5 us much easier to understand, isn't it?

Dad's Enchiladas

7. What is something you wish you’d done? Continued with my accordion lessons. Well, maybe not playing the accordion, but some form of musical instrument. Singing is out of the question for me, but to play a guitar like Santana, that would be something.

8. Who has been most influential in your life? My mom and dad. They both taught me so much.

9. What are your favorite business-related books? The Richest Man in Babylon, Freakonomics, Super Freakonomics, the Millionaire Next Door, most Malcolm Gladwell books; Outliers, The Tipping Point, What the Dog Saw, Blink, David and Goliath.

10. Other than business books what are your favorite things to read? Anything by Dean Koontz. I love science fiction, Dune, The Foundation trilogy, and The Martian Chronicles. The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich can be hilarious.

11. What are your top 5 favorite movies? The Shawshank Redemption, Alien, Monte Python and the Holy Grail, It's a Wonderful World. Honorable mention, Jacob's Ladder.

12. If I came to visit your city for one day what is the one thing I must do or see? Join me on the Sacramento River for fishing and exploring the Delta. Hurry, we will be selling our boat soon.

13. If I came to your city to visit for one day what is the one restaurant you would recommend? Without a doubt, Todo un Poco, and I am buying!

14. If I was going to relocate to your area what advice would you give me that is unique to the area? Be prepared to explore the surrounding world class destinations like, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, San Francisco, The Sierra's and so much more. You will never run out of things to do.

15. Do you have any special talents? No, but I like to cook and sometimes I come close to showing talent int that arena.

16 Do you have any quirks? I like to tell dad jokes!

17. What is your best character trait? Loyalty.

18. Have you ever done anything you would never do again because it was too hard or too dangerous? When I was young, I stepped across very deep chasm to a rock area that rose from the depths of the Grand Canyon. Never again! It still makes my palms sweat. My friends and I also used to jump off the 75' cliffs at Angora Lakes, near Lake Tahoe. Youth is definitely wasted on the young! It was exhilarating!

19. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time? Play pickleball! ! !

20. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you want to live? I would love to live in Monterey or Aptos, near Santa Cruz.

21. What is something that we don’t know about you that would surprise us? I have my black belt in Mixed Martial Arts and I love birds. A bucket list item is to see a male Resplendent Quetzal one day. I did get to meet a female Quetzal at Excaret once.

Female Resplendent QuetzalNotice, she would not look at me. She was playing hard to get.

Thank you, Carol Williams and Kathy Streib for this month's ActiveRain Challenge. It was fun!

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - You are very interesting. I'm still amazed at your abilities to play pickleball! Ziplining? I did it once and that was enough for me. Once upon a time I thought I wanted to go skydiving. Thankfully, I couldn't convince anyone to do it with me and now I wouldn't even attempt it. It's funny how our age affects the way we think and do things. Today, I think about safety. I am also a bird lover and fascinated by them. Someday, I hope you do all the things that you really want to do and will be successful too.

If I ever skydive, it will be like Paul Harvey or George Bush did it, very late in life.  Paul Harvey was 72.  Since that is 14 years away for me, I can be brave now.  😃

Thank you, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP.  I have been very lucky to do a lot of really great things in life, many by accident, but I do have a few more thins I would like to accomplish.  I hope you are also successful doing all the things you want to do!

Did you say fishing? Count me in. But, wait, I may not make it before you sell that boat. I'll bring an extra kayak for you then. We can fish from a kayak as long as the fish we catch is not bigger than a herring! I hope you enjoy Mother's Day with the women in your life!

I just sold my kayak too, Aura Alex. It was a California Kayak and would not have been happy in Arizona.  We can get a guide and go fly fishing for trout and shad, both very fun fish to catch around these parts.  I hope you are enjoying a wonderful Mother's Day!

Ah! I think I may have found a new fishing partner. I did fly fishing once and needed to learn to be better. The water cannot be too deep otherwise I would be swimming with the fish under the water!

I am not the best at fly fishing either, Aura Alex, but my dad really likes it and is trying to teach me some of the finer points.  We try to plan a trip or two a year with a guide so the guide can straighten me out.

Hi Ray:

This was such a fun read, and so much I did not know about you. I'm a Stephanie Plum fan, too!

I suppose ziplining is on my MAYBE list of things to do. We'll see.

Stephanie Plum's grandma, her sidekick and all of their antics can be so funny.  It is rare that I laugh when reading any book, but I find myself laughing all of the time when reading these books.

If you ever decide to zipline and are in Maui, I will send you in the right direction.

Hi Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS.  You and I can stand on the ground and take pictures of our friend, Endre Barath, Jr. jumping out of the plane, then we can all go have lunch so Endre can debrief us.  😉

Well I see in the comments you like Caddyshack and  Young Frankenstein - there are on my list too as top movies!  Now I understand why you're so good (or bad) at Dad jokes!  Keep em coming.   And holy smokes your Dad's cooking sounds amazing!  Yum!  Oh and one last thing - I used to staff on a high ropes course a long time ago.  You would have ones nuts on a few of them - scary stuff until you do it a bunch of times.

Good morning, Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker.  Those are some fantastic movies and I know many lines from each one.  They are endless sources of fun for all of my friends even all these years later.  They are timeless.

My dad is one of those guys that looks in a pantry that I think nothing is in, grabs a bunch of stuff and makes an incredible meal without recipes.  He is really good.

You have a lot of layers, Anna.  A high ropes course would have been an amazing job.  It would have taken me a long time to be comfortable up there.  I used to work on some high stuff as a contractor.  One of the best is the mason that put my in a dumpster and had his crane lift me way up in the air to waterproof a building.  It was quite a few days!

Totally timeless Ray.  We watch them to this day when we want to just laugh!  I actually was a volunteer leader for these courses, not paid staff.  Awesome years long leadership training program. I think you would have surprised yourself Ray as by the time we got to the high ropes part we were days into that week of  the leadership training and all the students were catching on how to take risks and GO FOR IT.

It sounds like a fun and enlightening class, Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker, and one that I would have learned a lot.  I am learning to push myself in lots of areas these days.  Today, I am getting interviewed by my video coach/mentor.  I would have run from that even 6 months ago.  Who knows how it will go, but I will be there for better or worse.

It was quite a fun day, Carol Williams, but wow, it took a long time before any of us had the courage to jump off.  Of course, once we all jumped off, we ran right back up and did it again.  My family visited there a few years ago and I did not even think about going up there.  Funny how life changes our risk/reward decision making. 😎

I do follow you and will make a concerted effort to look for your posts.  I know they are entertaining.

Ray Henson Roofing would not be for me either!  You would love the thrill of jumping out of an airplane.  I promise!  Come on – just do the jump! I enjoy the Sacramento area. I have not been there in years. True, never run out of things to do. There is something for everyone. I saw that video you did with your son – dad joke. Your favorite thing does not surprise me at all. I am a bird lover as well. I have owned birds for over 30 years.

Good morning, Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist.  I do not see myself falling out of a plane, but if I do, it will be like Paul Harvey at 72.....ummm, maybe 92.  I am sure it would be a thrill, but ziplining was a stretch for me.

We owned a number of birds for many years, then one day I went outside and my prized bird was gone.  The door was secure.  I never figured out what happened to him.  I ended up finding good homes for the other birds and taking up the hobby of taking pictures of birds in the wild.

Have a great day!
