Gena - I look forward to seeing you in SF as well.  Np on the Cosmo, but I dont think thats what Ill have!

Marueen - Im just glad to know some one so famous. :)  So if you didnt know it was there, did they have "rights" to reprint your screen shot?  This copyright stuff is very confusing...

no... I think that is probably fair use.... I am completely confused by copyright... I will do a post about it sometime soon... about some things that I have puzzled over.

Brad Andersohn (AR) has a screen shot of the Inman blog... with a screen shot of my blog... I could do a screen shot of Brad's post and post it... but my beautiful new blog header would be pretty dinky by that time. Screen shot of a screen shot of a screen shot.

thanks guys.  Are you doing "Outside" ActiveRain blogs?

It really is relatively painless.  I lucked out the bug that some ran into with their url not showing up for the longest time. It did not affect mine.  I struggled with the images because I am not good at that stuff.  My new blog was cached on Google on Sunday...that's a good thing.. all the old content kind of surprised me.  It is NOT like starting a new blog if you have local content on AR.  I don't really have a lot of local content on ActiveRain because I have gone back and forth on competing with myself on the search engines.

In the long run I think it will be very, very good... I can't wait to see the new localism on AR.

Svec - I cant wait to grow up  - I wanna be like Maureen NOW.  (are we there yet?)

Partners - Is it possible that Maureen is turning into a Mass media marketing conglomerate?  She is everywhere!

Maureen - I would really appreciate a post on copyright.  I know Ive been in the "gray" area at times, and had my hand slapped - however at the time I wasn't doing so intentionally.   I believe when commenting on, and referencing something (like news story / blog) a screen shot with link SHOULD be fair game.  In my mind Posting someone else's content as if it were your own is very wrong, and the reason for the law / rules.

back... sorry I stuttered... (double posted to Chris's blog)

here's the post I just read.... hope it is OK to include it here Chris.  Let me know if you do not want it here.  Thanks.

Bloggers Beware Copyright Battle May be Coming

I think the image he is using is too new to not be copyrighted by Norman Rockwell.  In the comments Lenn refers to The Boy Scouts having a copyright on it? So did they commission it?  I just know that  before 1923 is safer than after 1923. OLD DEAD ARTISTS are our friends.   I had looked up Norman Rockwell recently when someone at RL used a Norman Rockwell image.

A lot of what I know about Copyright has to do with knowing Lenn Harley online and paying attention to Lenn sueing the pants off other real estate brokers and agents who have used her images (maps.)

I read everything Lenn writes about copyright and then research it further.

I've got to admit that Fair Use and Licensing confuses me.

Marcy Geffner's article on Inman which is one of the articles that is linked in "Bloggers Beware" has great things to focus on....

Monet - the bay at argenteuil

Maureen - Its not only ok that you put that link there - its very helpfull - thanks!

If I refer back to some marketing class in school, I remember that its 25 years on music, and 50 years in print / art that general copyright lasts.

Thus you can get an inexpensive print reproduction of a famous "dead" artist (think monet here - I used The Bay at argenteuil) and not of a thriving contemporary artist like April Gornik . (From Ohio, and still alive)  Thus - untill your copyright ends, or you expire, your thoughts cant be freely shared - unless by express writen consent - and as the originator of said content you dont get insanly popular untill you have expired.....  bummer.

Having said that - Ill read your link to see how far off I am.

25 years in music?  Why then if you sing the famous happy birthday song on the radio or TV do you have to pay royalties?

Or is that an urban legend?

Joe Virnig makes a good point in a comment on that post (the one I linked to)  about a postcard photographer whom he knows who is able to make more money from his stolen images (images stolen from him) than the ones sold as postcards.

There is a big brouhaha in the bigger blogging world about the Associated Press.  I am not sure if anyone on ActiveRain has posted about it, this is one of the things that this post mentions but does not go into a great deal of detail.  The AP is trying to change the rules to make their words more protected as bloggers are taking more and more liberties appropriating content.  Cost per word?

I finally went and commented on the Inman article.  I may formally changing my name to Marueen.  There are far too many Maureen McCabes and this could be the perfect time to make that change.

Congrats Maureen! Or Marueen. Or my most frequent typo: Muareen.

Good catch Chris.
