Wordless Wednesday…That’s a Lot of Water

We were still living in Florida when Hurricane Harvey caused devastating floods in Houston and surrounding areas. I was glued to the Houston news apps watching it for days.

Cypress Creek runs along Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and I’d always wondered how high the waters reached.

The red arrow shows how high the waters reached from

Hurricane Harvey.

Recently we met someone who volunteers at the Preserve and he showed us just how high the waters rose.

I used an app to illustrate the rise in the water.

Because of Houston’s clay soil, water does not easily drain. The many bayous are supposed to help carry the water to Buffalo Bayou and then out to the Gulf.

Hi Kathy,

Wow!  I lived in Houston when Carla came through.  I remember being without power for a week.  The floodwater came to the steps of our house.  We were lucky.

Yes water, water, everywhere.  Though the high desert doesn't have much of water, until it rains and then the washes can easily move cars if the driver is unaware of the force of water. We encourage sellers and buyers to confirm if there are EPA flood plains on or near the property as flood insurance is very expensive. Good morning as well.

Hi Kathy,
We have a lot of hills and canyons in my area. I've always been very selective about where I've purchased property for that very reason.

I remember watching the news about Hurricane Harvey and the levels of water were astounding. We have water issues in PHX during the monsoon season and there were a few times we were almost flooded out on 3 sides. After the last one we had an extensive gutter system installed to carry the water away from the backyard.  Our roof is very high and the it looked like a hurricane out back - and not much in the front yard, which was weird at first.  Now it's all evened out and we haven't had any issues for years.  I pray that holds true for you guys and us as well!

My grandson was attending Rice University when Harvey hit.  I worried about him, but the campus apparently was mostly spared.

Wayne Martin Since Harvey, the flood control district has stepped up their efforts (I hope)

Nina Hollander, Broker in Florida we had to worry about the winds from hurricanes but here the concern is more over rising waters.

Kat Palmiotti I wish that I'd had a drone that I could have flown over the area during Harvey.

Brian England I can't imagine going through that. My brother couldn't get out of his neighborhood.

So true Roy Kelley Hurricane Harvey was an unusual occurrence.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I remember Carla too. I remember rain coming down in sheets at an angle. I can't remember losing power but I remember one of the hurricanes when I was older ...I think it was Alicia...and it knocked out a marina at Lake Conroe. b

Hi Leanne Smith for sure...always check about the need for flood insurance. Houston has a lot of bayous and creeks so there's water all around.

Carol Williams We lived on a canal a block over from the Intracoastal but thankfully, Florida's sandy soil made it easier for the rains to drain.

Rocky Dickerson those are really scary....no warning!!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker yikes. I forget that AZ has monsoons. From what I've read, the issue here with Harvey was that the system stalled over Houston. I told Larry that we probably should have kept a few of our kayaks!  Fingers crossed that we don't experience that.

Will Hamm wouldn't that have been nice. I'm glad we have 2 stories.

Grant Schneider in all the years we were in FL, we never had any flooding. The winds from a hurricane are a bigger issue.

George Souto I do wonder what happened to the gator I'd heard was in that creek. Wonder if he floated away??

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty we avoid Houston proper when we can. The traffic has not gotten any better.

Myrl Jeffcoat wow, I didn't realize he was here for that. I'm glad the area around Rice didn't flood. I bet you were worried. Thank you for the feature in your group.

Ed Silva my brother's neighborhood flooded but his house was fine. He credits  Larry with that because he built his house.
