My daughter Kelsey is a second year member of the Lady Warriors. This is an ASA 18U team coached by Santos Lingmai. The team is made up of girls from North Salem High School, McNary, Central, Santiam, McMinnville, and Yamhill-Carlton. It is a great group of girls. The kind of girls that work hard, check attitudes at the door and have fun. Their home field is North Salem High School.
Saturday, June 28, 2008 these girls played 4 games in 100 degree heat and won all but the semi-final game. This tournament was for the Regional Nationals and held at Vancouver Girls Softball Association home complex in Washington State. A win would have put them in the Championship bracket for a trip to Illinois to play in the National Championship. In the last game, we were the away team. With Kelsey pitching, we were ahead 2 - 0 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, no one on base. The coach decided to make a pitching change and we ended up losing the game by one run. I know I should be disappointed they lost, but I am not. These nine girls played an amazing game of softball, with an over the fence 2 run homer by Cassandra, plus Abby and Cassandra both made Major League plays by with two "on the run" and one amazing diving catch. Each girl contributed throughout the day with stellar moments. It is rare to find a team that is not "carried" by one or two players. Hats off to you girls, you rock! Kelsey congratulations on your single, double and home run in the first game! You almost hit the for the cycle, keep up the good work. (I know you were disappointed the second team you played, with the intentional pitch-out walks, but hey a walk gets you on base, and you know how you like to run around the bases.)
Salem loves softball and has an excellent base of softball teams for all ages, Little League, ASA (American Softball Association), plus teams for adults including co-ed leagues. Wallace Marine park in Salem is a fabulous facility and with the current gas prices, I wish we played more games there. Wallace Marine Park is maintained and operated by the City of Salem. There are five fields, concession stand, restrooms, covered eating area and lots of shade. Located in West Salem near the Willamette River, it is close to Roth's supermarket, Burger King and Dairy Queen, Subway, McDonald's and Taco Time if you forget your sunscreen or you just need a bite to eat. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, visit La Hacienda Real Mexican Restaurant on Wallace Road. The homemade tortillas are delicious, the salsa fresh, and the Pollo ala Crema -simple perfection in a cream sauce!
